proper break in:

Did I break it when I broke it in?!
Seems like the "heat? What heat?!" topic has morphed into the "LEAK? What LEAK?!" issue.
Not jumping to any conclusions, but let's see if break in technique correlates to any of the 1199 issues.
Simple "a" "b" or "c" answers. For example, a,a,b OR c,c,c. (Try to quote/copy OP every few posts.)
1. Did you...?:
a) follow the break-in rules to a T
b) kind of follow the break in rules
c) break every break in rule you could
2. Are you leaking/burning oil...?:
a) so fast you can hardly keep up
b) just enough to notice
c) not enough to notice
3. Hard starts happen...:
a) frequently
b) occasionally
c) rare to never
PS Again, this "poll" is about correlation, not causation, Wilkson, Capt CF and Phil.As for White13Pani and Mark419ny, I know a $2X,XXX bike shouldn't leak either way, but humor me for a moment.

So from what I can tell, if your BI is hard it likely won't leak. But if your BI is a semi-hard then you'll leak a bit. I've also found this to be true in my independent studies.Dat, dat, dat, ddat, dat, dat...news flash...inquiring minds want to know (TricoloreSF), so...

Just the facts ma'am, just the facts...
Can't draw too many conclusions with such small numbers, but just for funzies, looks like the "ride it like you stole it" & "CYA" groups did better than the half-...... Well, you get the point.
Keep up the good work! Post if you haven't, and thanks if you have.
And Phil, you'd better either change your signature (heat? what heat?) OR quickly delete your fire-breathing YouTube admission to the contrary!
Hate to throw a curveball in from the Dark Side of the Force... A big factor will also be "How did the service tech treat the bike during the PDI? If a PDI was done".
Both my s1ks came with 12-15 miles on them. Yes, manufacturing tech has improved greatly to where the breakin is almost immaterial. But the 1st 20 or so miles are still more important than the next 600.

and I am not sure how the price of something dictates how much it should or should not leak. you can only go so far with a gasket and a bolt, after all, that's all that holds in the fluid, just like any other vehicle....
range rovers are expensive but the wheel fall off while you drive down the road. they are in the shop more than on the road. total turds. but they have nice leather on the seats.
a porsche leaks, a harley leaks (most are well over 20k), a honda leaks, etc.
in my experience the potential for trouble is in the extremity of the build/application (high performance engine/high cylinder pressure, etc) not the simple price of the overall vehicle. that is ludicrous. what if the wheels were 10K and the bodywork was 5K? now you have 5K left for everything else, just as an example.
go spend 16 or 17 on a bike that doesn't leak (or at least have the reputation for it) and you will get ...... everything else (bodywork, seat, switchgear, etc)
A. C. C.
Hard starting issues only appear around 11,000 feet.
Why the fxxk do we care about what happened with your s1ks whatever that is.
This is the 1199 forum. And if you are a person that runs a bike in hard you will continue to do that. And like me if you follow the factory manual you will continue to do so no matter what some person on the internet says.
Any point to this .....
Maybe cause it's not just s1ks. It's all engines. The first time an engine is run and the first time it's put under load play major factors in how well the rings seal.
But hey, ignore it cause it comes from someone that owns a s1k. What could I possibly know?![]()

Your 4 little rings are going to seal a little easier than two big man rings .
I'll go with. That your bike is a wicked bit of kit. Let down in the looks department![]()
