The Sequential Tail Light

Hi guys

There were some posts here during the last months about sequential turn indicators (e.g. http://ducati1299.com/ducati-1199/20557-motodynamic-integrated-tail-light.html).

The motodynamic light was never released, so I decided to build a tail light for myself :)

Next to sequential turn indicators the prototype does also include an aero like anti collision flash, a pretty clever brake modulator and a detection for the Panigale hazard lights mode.

Dude aweome!! How were u able to do it yourself? The only reason i dident get fendet elem and new tail light was cuz i was waiting for the sequential ones ughhh

Seriously You Rock

Gecko:

You engineering skills never cease to amaze me. Is this using the stock tail-light? If yes, can I send you mine?

If yes, just PM how much I owe you for it!!!

Since we both have SL's we have to use integrated tail lights & I do not like the one I have on my bike now.

Seriously great work.

Thanks!
It took me almost a week of labour.
I didn't work with microprocessors for the last 25 years, so it was time to get into it again. Many things have changed, everything became super cheap, easy and IDEs are nowadays open source, very cool.

First I built a Panigale turn light emulator, because I didn't want to do all testing directly on the bike. Then I built the prototype light and wrote the software (written in Ardunio C).

Programming and electronics is actually quite easy, I decided for an attiny85 processor and programmable RGB LEDs.
The most terrible part is opening the OEM tail light. Almost impossible without cracking something. This took hours! I did it with the OEM light and a cheaper chinese one. The chinese one is actually better to open, and has a smoked instead of a red glass. So I put all the LEDs into the chinese housing.

Before installing the light into the bike I will switch to a bigger processor that is capable to communicate with an electronic 3-axis accelerometer: this will allow me to do the brake light modulation dependend on the bike's deceleration.

Incredible! Hats off to you Gecko - that light unit looks awesome. So what are your next steps/plans? Will you market or bask in the glory of having the only version of this and have us dribble with jealousy? :D

Thank you BigBoost.
Exactly, this light is going to be installed into the SL's rear. I know exactly what you mean :)

The only problem in producing more tail lights is the mechanical housing, I would have to have a vendor that sells open ones :(
Maybe somebody on this Forum has access to the chinese market?

bravo sir great work functional and may save somebody.

Thank you. I am pretty unsure about the ACLs legal use on public roads. I also implemented aero "Position Lights" (left and right beacons in red and green), but switched them off. It's simply too much. I guess I will allow enabling these security feature - including the ACL - with a DIP-switch.

In my understanding, what's good for the aerospace industry, shouldn't be bad for us street riders :)

BTW: I am currently working on the front turn indicators, based on the same software.

Dude this is awesome! Definitely, cheers to your skills and labor on the prototype! Look forward to checking it out on the SL.

Oh and what did you think about the dry clutch? I'm assuming you've gotten to ride quite a bit?

People get wide eyed when they see me around Hahahaha

The dry clutch is awesome. I gave the bike to my dealer for a quick turn. I haven't seen him before with a bigger grin :)
Clutch is very direct, slip is much less than on the OEM clutch. If you're not used to the bike (I also installed the "throttle slop remover" thing, the JetPrime velocity stacks and the SprintFilter P16 WSBK filter. No tuning to the bike yet), it feels like a switch: idle or hell :)
The problem I am currently working on is the MotoCorse exhaust: simply too much heat for the fairings. But this topic is for another thread...

i can get you plenty of integrated tail lights but i dont know if that would have the mechanical housing open

Uuhhh...
The problem is that both the OEM and the after market tail lights for the Panigale are glued: front glas and back (black) carrier are put together with silicone to make it water proof.

I'd definitely send you my smoked taillight if you figured out a cost that would make it worth your while to do the mod.

I had done this type of thing on my last car where I removed my headlights n sent them to a forum member who blacked out the inner housing and upgraded the projectors n then he shipped it back to me. Was definitely worth the cost. When you figure this out, create a feeler thread and I guarantee that you'll be swamped with this mod for a lotttttt of people.

If I were you, I'd keep this for myself and have a one off for everyone else to envy.

That is really awesome Gecko, my hat is off to you.

I lived in Basel and Luen for awhile so I know how good you guy's are at things like this.
I hope you can sort out a solution to getting your project off the ground I am sure you would get plenty of takers, me included.
