Dunlop Q3 Results/Feedback Etc

Help Support Ducati Forum:

Yesterday, I spoke to the Dunlop reps from NY here at the 2013 AIMExpo trade show in Orlando, FL.

They confirmed everything that Mark has described in the beginning of this thread. I'm looking forward to trying the Q3s as my next set. I've gone through a set of Bridgestone S20s (with 190/55 rear) and as Steve B reported earlier, they are an excellent street tire with impressive wet performance and enough dry grip to wear out a set of knee pucks on the street and in the Blue Ridge mountains.

Had nothing but excellent experiences with a Buell 1125R and Dunlop Q2's, such as this ride below (I'm the bike being followed), so if the Q3's are any better its a bonus.

we probably spoke to the same people. I just did it a month ago at the ama races. i also routinely call them and ask about future developments.

disclaimer i am not a dunlop rep or anything of that nature. i am just a ducati rider that thinks the pirrellis are way too expensive. looking for best bang for the buck.

You ran Bridgestones on a Pani? Would be curious to hear more about this. My experiences with Bridgestones on track (slicks) were less than satisfactory. But on the street, I've run them before on my Triumph and thought they worked really well.
Which ones/what size and what were your impressions? Mileage? Pressures? etc?

More details in the thread links below. Summary is that I got used to Bridgestone BT-003 race compound DOTs on my Crossplane R1 track bike, and ran BT-003RS for street. Was happy with the profile and semi-soft carcass construction that I think gives better bump absorption on the street. Took the 1199 to the Smoky Mountains earlier this year and wanted a better rain tire than the OEM Supercorsas, so went with S20's based on Steve B's descriptions. Awesome wet weather performance, with all the grip I could use in the dry at semi-sane speeds. For spirited mountain riding, I like 34 front/36 rear cold or a bit higher due to the softer carcass than either Dunlop or Michelin. Per Steve B's instructions, I lengthened the OEM shock to compensate for the shorter overall height of S20 vs. Supercorsa, with excellent results - light turn-in with enhanced steering stability IMO. Mileage is projected at about 2500 miles per set, about average IMO, of course depends on right wrist, conditions, etc. so YMMV.

I have a set of Q3's on mine and rode it here at the track at Grattan Raceway for 2 days. Tire pressure was a little high the first day even after the first couple sessions and setting cold pressure to 30/30. Felt slippery here (Michigan) Temp out was probably cool in the morning, maybe low 60's. I dropped the pressure after getting a feel for them the first couple sessions to 27F/26R and left them that way all day. The only downside is the Q3's tend to cool off even when you sit them in the sun, so just go easy on them in the corners the first couple laps. After that, have fun! These are some phenominal tires.

Last set I had were the Pirelli Rosso Corsa's 190/55 and those performed very well but shed a lot even with a higher pressure in them. The Corsa's were VERY good tires. But the Q3's are even better. The Corsa's kicked the TC on a few times (DTC 2, 195LO), but I don't remember seeing the light come on at all with the Q3's. I would HIGHLY recommend the Q3's. I have had the Rosso's, Rosso II, Corsa's, Supercorsa's and the Q2's and I think these are by far the best ones I have tried. Especially bang for buck! :D

Were you just there this past weekend? I was as well, though I don't remember if I saw a red Pani or not.....definitely not in intermediate which I was riding in, cuz I'm pretty sure I passed just about everyone at some point :D though I guess we could have been matching lap times!

P.S. I was on an unpainted Daytona 675 not a Pani.

Yeah I was there. I rode intermediate. was it the gray Triumph 675?

Yeah they have a picture of us going around the R1 in turn 3. It's tab 31 of Intermediate Sunday. Three of us in corner 3 abreast. Anyways, PM me if you want. Bike ran good saturday. Sunday it started lean popping like crazy, power came on and off in turns (felt like TC was intervening but it wasn't) fueling is off, top speed on the straight was 120 in 3rd, 4th and 5th have no power. I think the ECU is having issues. Seems electronic related. I'll have to take it back to the dealer.

I thought I said this but maybe I didn't: I didn't ride on Sunday, only Saturday. So, if you found pictures of me on Sunday, it's probably not me lol. I didn't see any pictures of you in intermediate on Saturday, but I am on page 6, and probably a bunch of other pages, I haven't looked at all of them yet. But I still don't remember seeing you in any sessions.

So last week I bought the Q3s with a little hesitation since I have all the faith in the stock Pirellis, but the higher cost was getting to me. At less than $280 a set I figure it would be worth the comparison.
Took them to NCBIKE for a track day. I have found my answer to the costly tire problem and Q3's will be on my 1199s for as long as I own it. They performed perfectly on the track. I had just as little intervention from the TC as I did with the V2s, which was to say only when ringing out the throttle coming out of a turn. And even though the TC light was on, the bike was still excellerating out of the corner. BTW I have DTC on setting 1.
I won't know the longevity of the Dunlops since my bike is now up on blocks until next spring, but it was really nice to learn that I have another option in tires. Thanks again for starting this topic to give out the information about the tire comparisons. It helped me trust them so I could give an honest evaluation. I can't wait until next spring!!!

Thanks for the update gman74. I'm coming up on a tire change in less than 1K miles and am in the same mental boat you were. Love the OEMs but a new set for about the price of a rear Supercorsa is too much to ignore.

Your review was the last straw I needed to go with Q3s. Now, who has the best price today?

Lastly, why are you not riding until Spring? I lived in Raleigh for 8 years and I rode almost all winter, as long as there wasn't ice on the ground.

thats what i like to read gman. i knew deep down the q3 would be a perfect tire.

Easy for someone in Central Florida to say. ;) (Were you the guy I saw pushing an 848/1098/749/something across I-4 on Lake Mary Blvd back about a year ago one day in morning rush hour?).

Anyways, I grew up near Raleigh (Middlesex) and agree that, while it stays fairly cold during winter months, there's enough warm(er) days there to warrant keeping it ready to go.

Do it - I replaced the S20's on mine with Q3's after going through one front and two rears, and they work great. As noted, stiffer carcass than the 'Stones so the trademark Dunlop feel, but a noticeable step up from the Q2's. Similar dimensionally to the S20's, so pretty comparable TC results. About 1.5 TC settings more active than the OEM Pirellis; I run 1 in race mode and 2 in sport. Like them better and don't doubt they have more grip, but I think the S20's are a better choice for cold/wet as they have a bit more siping and don't seem to need as much temp to get happy.

Luckily that wasn't me. Poor bastard. RE: NC roads, I'd rather ride the roads around Raleigh in the winter than any Central Florida roads in perfect weather :(

Thanks Steve. I really liked the S20's after trying them earlier this year based on your recommendations. Couldn't really fault the tire at all. I may just keep S20s for the street and try Q3's at Jennings GP. I've never run street compounds at the track, but with tire technology as good as it has gotten over the last few years, I'm willing to give it a go, especially if it saves $150 or more per set.

In motorcycle-usa.com's 2010 streetbike tire shootout at Willow Springs and Streets of Willow, the Q2's were only about 0.4 second off of the fastest time put down by the Pirelli Supercorsa SP (at Streets of Willow). If the Q3 is even better now, it probably has equaled or surpassed the Supercorsa SP on the track.
