End of R and new 1299?

Sounds like what Honda did to the S2000 about ten years ago. When customers found the original version too high-strung, they lengthened the stroke to bump displacement and get some torque back in the middle, and dropped the rev limit to keep it together (AP1 S2000's have much higher piston speeds at redline than a Pani, BTW; close to 80's era F1 engines).

It will be interesting to see how the rulemakers in WSBK deal with it if indeed they manage to race the larger displacement. With less dependence on rpm's, they could perhaps reintroduce air restrictors without it being an unacceptable penalty.

not that they do it lice mercedes for example, taking a smaller size engine as baseline and than naming it higher with different mapping (saw it in europe with the A160/180/200CDI) - all the same 1.6 l engine, just different power configs

Or maybe do it like Ford did in the 60's with the 42X big block.

They simply increased the compression ratio, and relabelled the engine as being 1 cubic inch larger in displacement.

My only problem with it is when buyers might wait for a year if they knew an "R" or what not was coming out. Rather, Ducati and the dealers always deny anything and want to get you on whatever model is on the showroom floor.

FYI, they don't tell the dealers .......why?...because we'd be the first to leak the info because we're all huge bike enthusiasts. The info is tightly guarded as long as the manufacturer can keep any model change under raps...

i agree with that - then again....a 1299R (?) :)

it's like releasing the DESMO16 and then a year later bringing out an 1198R to top that bike for half the price?

maybe it's only a distraction coup to get everyone in a wrong direction.

i hope for a supermono or a 250 racer :D

I hope this is not true considering I just got my SL two weeks ago:(

Was hoping that the SL would be the latest and greatest for at least a few years.

All I can say is, even if it was true, (and we do not know yet) I would love to have the list of bikes you have.

I love my 2012 1199S but would swap it for a SL anyday. You have both and a K1300S for touring and a HP4. You are one lucky devil. Sad face and getting an SL two weeks ago just do not go together. :)

agree completely -- the SL, no matter what comes out, is a bike that is unto itself and a marvel coming out of the Ducati factory for anyone to buy

-- it is certainly a great time to be an enthusiast :)

You're right on all fronts...and I've gotten over being concerned (thanks to some great insight from a new friend)...no more sad faces on this issue! :)

The SL is the most amazing bike I've ever ridden and I know I'm lucky to have one!

I dont understand why anyone is concerned or surprised the fact that new bikes are coming out.:D

Its not a new thing that new and better bikes are coming out. I'm sure after "1299" there will be 1399, 1499, 1599 RR...1899RRRR in 2020. lol.
