Per the service manual - every two oil changes clean the oil pickup gauze filter (15,000 miles/24,000km). For those that have performed this maintenance did you find the mesh filter dirty or do you feel the interval could be extended?

"Oil pickup gauze filter" is just a fancy term for oil filter and hell yes, it's gonna be dirty. I end up changing mine every other oil change, but considering I change my oil every 3,000 miles or so I'm still replacing it twice as often as the manual calls for.

Not talking about the cartridge oil filter here AH, it's the "mesh filter assembly" also known as the "oil pick up gauze filter". To access this unit it is necessary to remove the RH side fairing, the exhaust tail pipes and then the oil sump in order to gain access to the mesh filter assembly. This is then blown out using compressed air.
A bit more involved than just doing the regular oil filter change.

going way back in time for me....916 days....there was an all metal cylindrical filter (3" to 4" metal tube with holes drilled in it) that needed to be cleaned every 15,000 miles - when you refer to a "gauze filter" i think of a fabric or paper element - anyway...whenever i looked at mine, it was perfectly clean - if you are doing regular oil changes....it will probably remain spotless....but is something to be looked at in case something large finds itself in your crank case, that is meant to be caught before it gets to your paper filter - i hope that hepls

Ahhhh, my bad. I did a little research and it appears that the screen (and the gunk on it) is an early warning indicator for signs of engine damage, but not something that typically gets fouled up under normal use. Since it's such a pain in the ... to replace it's one of those things I'll leave to the dealer to help justify the cost of dropping $$$ on the 15k/30k service.
