First Track Day Questions

I saw a pic where someone attached the chock to a 3/4" sheet of plywood which was in the back of a U-Haul. After loading the bike it was tied down and looked stable.

For what those Kendon trailers cost you could pay a little more and get a enclosed trailer.

This is a 6'x10' which has 6'-2" of interior height for $5129. If it were a little bit taller I could stand up in the back which would make it perfect.

Kendon is definitely expensive but the advantage is that it folds up and you can store it easily. If you buy an enclosed trailer or van it’s going to occupy a parking spot. Also they’re super lightweight and more easy on your mpg (which is a big concern these days w gas so expensive).

For me doing 2-3 track days a year, renting a Uhaul moto trailer is the sweet spot.

Used?

Interesting. Folding would solve the storage issue. I thought about doing a hitch carrier too. Has anyone tried one before?

Funny you mention gas prices. I was just thinking if I go to Motorsport Park Hastings, which is twice as far, it will add up both in dollars and drive time. I normally average about 20-23 MPG, and its going to be worse towing a trailer. Its 5 hours longer than going to Putham Park too.

I picked up my new bike in LA (300 mi away) with the Outback, which normally gets 23-24 mpg, got 18 with loaded trailer and with gas at $6.20/gal here really hurt the wallet. Needed about 2.5 tanks setting me back about $250 in gas.

Brand new from Kendon. Kendon is located in southern CA.

They're more than that now on Kendon's site.

Yikes. There are some tracks just outside of Chicago which would be closer but none of the dates line up with my work schedule. Putham Park is 233 miles for me and is likely going to be it.

If you can swing it re parking at home etc, a van is the way to go

These diesel sprinters are good

Have you seen diesel prices? Oof.

I had considered trading in the SUV and getting a Ford Transit. I don't think even the medium roof would fit in my garage, which is a pretty standard 2-car. I could stand up in the back of the high roof though.

I looked into hitch carriers for my 899 but 1) I think the bike is too wide and 2) the tongue weight for the hitch is too high.

I almost always use a U-Haul motorcycle trailer with my own baxley chock placed in the center, canyon dancers and sato racing hooks attached to the rear subframe. Same thing on my V4.

You outside Chicago? I'm going to..

BHF - 6/13
BHF - 7/9
Autobahn - 7/31
Road America - 8/22
Autobahn - 9/5

It would be fun to meet up if you can make any of those dates.

I wish. Those are the dates/events I've checked and due to work is a no-go.

With the carriers, tongue weight seems like the primary limiting factor. For a Class III, its 600 lbs. So, weight of bike and carrier should be less than 600 lbs. I'd think with a Pangiale V4 or even an 899, you'd be under that. The Black Widow heavy duty carrier is 95 lbs, plus what a Panigale with fluids would weigh, so figure maybe 555 lbs?

I used to haul my 848 and 1198 with one of those.
The V4 is only 436 lbs wet weight. Never had an issue, though they move a little when you hit bumps. haha It's a little nervous watching it in the rear view but they work fine.

I think that's the exact one I was looking at. It solves a bunch of problems.

Did you add on any brake lights?

No it didn't cover the tail lights of the truck I used. I sits against the wall when not in use. It's really slick. It should have reflectors though. But... your bike is out in the wind and dust and whatever. DO NOT put a cover over it hauling it. The cover will scratch the crap out of your bike beating in the wind. When you get to the track, lock it in paddocks and you're good.
Eventually if you go with a van, all you need is two straps and a ramp. No wheel chuck and all that. Put front tire against front wall of van, 2 straps to lower triple to forward floor hooks against front wall of van, done. Hunker it down tight. I haul mine over crazy bumpy windy Alps roads. Totally stable.

I ordered a trailer hitch receiver and a wiring kit. It claims to be rated for 657lb tongue weight, so plenty for a carrier. I also ordered a wiring kit in case I decide to go with a trailer with lights etc. The whole package was $238.73 shipped.

If you consider a small trailer, I just stepped up to a toy hauler and am selling the small Aluma trailer I used for the last year or so.

My issue with owning a trailer is that I don't have storage space unless I rented something. A carrier or folding trailer I could deal with.

Out of curiosity, what toy hauler did you get? There's a site where you can rent them like ride share or similar stuff.

Yep, storage is an issue for sure. I considered renting, but then said wtf and just bought.
