Front Suspension

This is the R forks with the k-tech through rod cartridges and the other is the Ohlins with the S fork's.
I'm not affiliated with k-tech but I can tell you they are the best forks I have ever used, unbelievable feedback and we haven't revalved them yet.

Hey brother, now KTech is saying their through rod stuff won’t fit the S forks, only the R forks…I’m working with a suspension guy near San Diego that knows Petrucci’s crew chief and is calling him to see if they have some R forks to work with, but he also says the TRDS stuff might work on the S forks with some simple mods or matching of some spacers.

Did you have to do anything spec to get the TRDS stuff to work in the S forks?

If so PM me your contact t info please, Quinten is interested how you made it work and suspects it’s something simple.

Our k-tech is fitted to the R forks but the only difference will be the bottom mount and the length of the stroke (S has shorter stroke) should be an easy fix for a competent suspension tech

Isn’t a longer stroke a good thing?

Wait that sounded funny haha

Do the R forks mount to the S triple tree sizes etc?…same axles and spacing etc…if so maybe the play is to find a set of R fork bodies and put the KTech into those

At what point do you just buy a complete aftermarket fork and store or sell the complete S forks?

Never on this bike….would be about $20,000 to do so, and I’d go backwards on my brake system, and only gain a marginally better front end than just putting those carts into the shock bodies.

To go full new front end fork set up you have to get a 108 spaced brake caliper, so replacement of my $4000 GP4 calipers, which also means getting rid of my $5000 Sicom rotors, also have to replace my $700 IMA adjustable triple tree with $1000 different triple tree, and have to get a new axle and machine the right spacers. And the forks themselves are $11k.

And for that expense I would end up with a lower quality braking system, or at least one where I like the feel less, and gain no noticeable front end feel benefit at my riding level.

Just doesn’t make sense to take a haircut selling used parts that I love, and then spending $19k-$20k on top of that to have something I like the feel of less.

Yeah I suppose at that point you're pretty well married to at least the dimensions of the standard S forks.

Did you run the electronic forks at all?

Yeah this whole season I ran the stock forks and internals with the stock rear shock, with heavier springs on both.

That was fine at slower pace, but my pace is improving rapidly, so I can no longer adjust around the stock stuff with settings and heavier springs to make it work with my rider weight and mods.

The fork cartridges will give longer travel over the stock Ohlins.
You could contact your fork builder, and perhaps get the stanchions replaced with the stanchions from the R fork. The R fork fits the triple clamps and yokes from the base and S bike. They're just longer. Although, I'm not sure which parts are different on the R fork.
What does perplex me, is why K-tech don't offer it for the S fork. Unless, they just haven't tested it yet.

Just talked to my guy, the KTech TRDS carts run 6 mm longer so essentially you need a different base. The caps on the V4 R fork bodies are different and the inner tube is a different size.

Presumably, you can buy the R stanchions and outer tube, move your fork base/boot across, and fit the TRDS. The TRDS will have its own caps/tops.

Yeah the R forks fit straight in, i think that would be best way to go, spacers are same just need to adjust the fork position slightly but I will send you our motospec data as well. I'm incapacitated ATM after a dirtbike crash last week but will try and get it to you soon, i also need to send data to rick as well.

Much appreciated brother, and get well soon.

I weigh 190lbs w/o gear. I am running ohlins R&T up front with #11 springs and a spacer pulled out to give me an extra 10mm of travel. You can see that in where the fork tubes are sticking out of my triples. I opted for the base model and with the money saved I got full suspension and carbon wheels. She means business!

This came, custom valved and sprung to my weight.

Ended up just keeping it simple and doing the FKR 108 carts for the front end, those are being valved and should be here this week.

Serious question, have you thought about cutting weight to make riding easier? I'm not fat, but I think my last track day would have been more enjoyable if I were at my fighting weight instead of stable relationship / mortgage weight.

.... yeah I’ve thought about, been working out like crazy for the last track weekend of the season in a few weeks…it’s not just weight, it’s the physical fitness required to move that weight…last track weekend my pace was enough that I was literally gassing out by the 5 or 6th lap, part of that was I realized I was holding my breath through every corner, easy to correct, but even so you are essentially doing one leg alternating squats with full core engagement as you move side to side through the switch backs, and you are holding static one leg squats through the long sweepers, and while you would normally catch your breath if it were a work out instead you are accelerating on a crotch rocket to a hard braking zone.

The last track weekend told me the truth about my weight and fitness level lol

I’ll get down to 210-220 lbs by next spring, but more importantly be a lot more fit.
