Fuel and Range Tracking

Hey all, new owner of a ‘19 V4S. How do you guys manage range tracking and refueling? How many miles do you typically get out of the reserve?

My last bike, a BMW, had all sorts of creature comforts including a gas gauge. But I’m no stranger to counting the miles; my previous ride was a Yamaha with only a mechanical trip odometer to track fuel use. With that bike I had a few instances of forgetting to reset when I refueled, lots of filling up a half empty tank, and a few touchy moments near the end of the reserve.

I get that the fuel in a V4 will spend most of its time at the back of the tank, whether through acceleration force or the front wheel being pointed at the sky... but the electronics seem to track fuel usage and mileage, providing enough for the screen to calculate fuel. I scoured the manual but the only display function I found for miles remaining was a count up from zero that displays when you hit reserve. Nice feature, but when I hit reserve I will likely head directly to a station. Thankfully this bike is light enough to push if needed.

I have seen the low fuel odometer come on as low as 120 km, and as high as 156km. I have not ran out yet, but others on here say you have up to 20km once the light comes on.

Thanks - with that I can probably use 100 miles as my fill up point - I am never more than the reserve distance from a fuel station on my regular commute. Now I just need to remember to hit the reset on the trip odometer with every fill up...

How high do you all normally top off? The manual says not to fill the neck, but do you fill until you see liquid or stop at the first auto-shutoff of the pump?

I do not fill up to the neck but as much as possible without it coming out when you close the tank.

Anywhere between 80 and 95 miles if I'm doing 50/50 freeway and city. If I'm doing only freeway, I've seen it come on as late as 103 miles. I ran out of fuel on the freeway at 134 miles. Luckily for me, it was right before an exit that led to a Yamaha dealership. Here I am coasting my bike to the parking lot, walking it to the service department asking for enough fuel to get me the five extra miles I needed to get home. "You can afford a Ducati but not gas?" jokes were made, I got home. I wanted to see how far I could push it and well, I did.

I cruise anywhere between 5-6k, shifting around those points as well. I've also seen the light come on as early as ~60miles, if I'm pushing it.

Hey mate,

I kept a spreadsheet for the first few refuels to work out exactly how much I could expect from reserve. I commute, but there is 26km between service stations on my ride (80Km/day), so I have to watch it. Of note, is that my calculations show I was getting between 6.2 and 6.8 L/100, but the Average shown on the bikes computer was between 4.5 and 5.2 L/100. I'm told the difference is because I'm not revving it enough, but either way I won't be relying on that. My fuel light comes on pretty much at 180Km.

I'm not sure if you can see the image (let me know, but here's the link: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1pY4u8czGp3aITdrJbFwQawchlnAfj8HF), but this is what I came up with:

180k? You should enter the solar challenge :)
These things usually spend up on gas like drunken sailors, my average is 16l/100k plus $35 worth of rubber!!

Like I said, it's my commute. I cop plenty of .... for it, but for me it's an awesome way to get to work :).

My post was more about how I manage post reserve light fuel.
