Fuel Reserve Trip Issue

I read somewhere that the cost is significant if done post design and minimal when designed and integrated at the beginning of bike design.

It always costs significantly more to do it right the second time around.

It just seems so odd. Here is a bike with SO much thought put into it and with such 'outside of the box' thinking yet the fuel gauge is left as an idiot light.

Maybe they were so track focused during design that they figured all they need to do is indicate that fuel is low. All other fuel levels are irrelevant.

For me, I just hate having warning lights. They are so annoying. But then again, I guess that is the whole point, eh? It's like the bike is saying; "Hey you need to get gas and if you run out, well, I warned you and you are an idiot."

It'll depend on how you ride, but I've done a max of 59 Kilometers on reserve and I let it run dry. It died 5 feet from my driveway completely empty :D Lucky for me I have a four stroke dirt bike so I had a 5 gallon jug full of premium to fill her up lol.

Thanks rm4two for that info...thats exactly what I wanted to know. Now at least I have a figure in mind before it runs dry. You are right, it will surely depend on how I ride when on reserve.

Like Steve B said, I believe the sensor is in the back of the tank. So when low on fuel if you brake or accelerate fairly hard the shift in fuel will trip the sensor. I always reset trip 2 when I fill up and I consistently get 135+ miles out of a tank. I rarely even pay attention to the low fuel light anymore lol.

Is that 135+ before low fuel or at about bone dry? Best I have managed on my S ABS is ~100 before low fuel light comes on. Haven't tried to see how far I can get after light yet.

Yup mind does it too, comes on about 3 times before it stays on. Doesn't really bother me too much you just have to ignore until it stays on permanently, then you have about 30-40 miles left.

After mine came on (and stayed on) I did 25miles and filled up to the top and got 15 litres in which meant I still had 2 litres left.

1 litre = 0.264172052 US gallons

I did 17.9 miles with the fuel light / trip counter on and the bike stopped !! Ran out of fuel. I was riding hard but still thought it would have gone further !
So for me i will be filling up as soon as the light comes on.

Mine will come on for a few seconds and say "hello". It will then go away for 2 or 3 miles before coming back on until I fill up. I just consider it an idiot light, nothing more, and do not expect much accuracy.

What surprises me however is that Ducati can provide electronic suspension and a dash that could host video games but can not seem to provide us something more effective than an idiot light for a fuel indicator. How difficult would it be to have a little bar graph for a gas gauge?

The bar graph on the instrument panel is possible (graphics) but apparently the fuel sensor is a NTC thermistor, its resistance changes alot when bath/submerged with gasoline (pretty volatile).

Change of resistance , will change voltage drop across it, this change is picked-up by the BBS (black box system) and sent via CAN to the instrument panel to light-up the LOW FUEL indicator. Is pretty intelligent at lest it is one of the sensor the bike system can detect when sensor error arises.

The implementation with Float&lever and linear hall sensor type to fulfill a fuel gauge will likely limit a flat design shape of tank and may reduce fuel holding capacity.:D

Is a superbike after all, i guess.
