Hard starting

Strangely i did not have any starting problems for the 1st 900 miles...I've got 1500 now and always have a problem starting when she's hot.

I'm curious whether anyone outside of the US is having this problem. If not, it seems like it may be an issue with our good old US of A gas.

It's happened to me twice now. The only way it will start is to blip the throttle a little. I plan on telling my dealer so they can report it to Ducati.

Lean fuel mixture. If you install even some slip ons it should go away. Not the ideal way to look at things but my 848 used to do it all the time, even when VERY much broke in, the dealer said the only thing they could do about it was try some valve adjustments. But the easiest way to rid of it is an exhaust and ecu. Ive luckily only had this happen once so far with the 1199. It was at an idle. But if I am correct it happens when idling, or when you pull in the clutch and typically at low speeds in first or second gear? Lean fuel mixture... Diagnosis: You can have the dealer try to do valve adjustments or you can get an exhaust. I know... kinda ...... we have to deal with this, but the EPA regulations make them restrict the hell out of the bikes. Dealer really cant do a whole lot about it.

My 848 has Slipons and ECU and is still a pig to start.

We're talking about Ducati here.

No two are the same, so all this 'diagnosis' is just words in the air.

My money still says it's either an ECU flash, or under powered battery (causing starter issues).

I've owned other Duc's and I don't think it should be happening period.

People are going to start frying starters. Actually I believe I read on another board it's already happened.

I'm not worried, but I'd like a real resolution. Ducati is already working on the issue I'm told, so saying it's normal is BS. Bump starting a bike of this caliper is not acceptable. I believe in Ducati so I believe a fix will be on the way shortly.

Well it seems I'm the first....
My starter blew up this afternoon...

Lucky enough it happened in the dealer's parking lot, not mine though.
I had had 2-3 issues where my bike wouldn't start.
Waited a few minutes, and it was all fine...
But today, it just wouldn't start, at one point the engine didn't even turn.
Engine light lit up, and it was dead...:(
just the relay sound when you press the start button.

They took my bike in.
The interior of the starter was in pieces...
2100km, maximum 45-50 start-ups

I really wonder how long it'll take before Ducati ships a new one, when
they struggle shipping bikes...

Actually your the 5th I know of. Obviously that doesn't make it better. The good news is you were at the dealer. Hopefully you have a new (revised) starter soon. I hope Ducati sends us some good news regarding these issues.

My starter went out on mine also. It took the dealership about one week to get another one in. Looks like they are keeping the part in stock and somewhat know about this issue. Thx Shawn

Thanks for the reply...I thought about this all evening long
It's giving me some kind of hope...;)

We'll see how long it takes, I'll keep you guys posted...

I hear ya, I was bummed when mine went out. Bike wasn't even 24hours old yet. Then was thinking how long till that part could/will arrive (ouch). But its easy to switch out. But the part is for sure in stock. Thx Shawn

Thanks for the advice. I'll call my dealer. I'm getting the same. Rode it for a while, let sit about half an hour, went to start and got nothing but the buzz of a relay or something like it. Engine light lite up. Spend the next two days push starting my brand new $20K bike. I still love it but that part sucked. Hard to run in full leathers. I thought I killed the battery trying to start it, but charging made no difference.

Well, I really thought I was the first and only one to have this problem...
Seems more and more like a design flaw, or a bad batch of starter...
Time will tell...

At least, a small consolation...,
I'm picking up my new Fiat 500 Abarth this evening...! :)

I promise that will make you Ducati seem like a Honda when it comes to reliability ;). I do think that was an awesome commercial for that car. Car looks very cool. But Chrysler and Italy = reliable????

Again...,
Time will tell...

I've been driving the standard 500 since March 2011 without any issues...!
What do you want...need to save somewhere when you're riding a Panigale...!

I haven't experienced this problem or the white smoke issue either. But I do remember reading somewhere that you should not overfill your tank. Something about the excess fuel will flow into the emission system making the bike hard to start. I thought I read it in the owners manual? I'll see if I can find it again.

excess fuel overflows into the charcoal and causes a multitude of running issues.
