Hard starting

Good question. In AZ it is really f'n hot lately however I have not had any problems with starting. (Knock on wood) Hot or cold. If ever there was a place where vapor lock would be an issue, it is here. Myself, I am thinking it could be related to electrical resistance increasing due to heat causing reduced efficiency in the battery and/or starter motor. Just a guess though.

That is another theory that I have heard off"¦gotta get a different battery to test the theory. Though it never seems like my starter is struggling to turn or have I noticed my battery become weak.

It may take time but I'm sure it will get figured out at some point. There is always a reason.

A person from a 'think tank' once told me, "Every problem has a solution. If there is no solution then you do not have a problem."

I wonder what percentage of 1199 owners have this problem? Normally on a forum, people having problems will post more than people that don't have any. In the next days, I will know if there will be a 1199 available for me (customer cancellation) ... and I am worried about this issue and heating problem. Should I wait for 2013 model?

Maybe its a good idea to wait. I can only wonder what they will do next year

I am also having the same thoughts as you. I am from Singapore and according to my local bike shop, my bike should be arriving in 2 weeks'. However, after reading a considerable amount of people having heating issues and problems with starting the bike, I am beginning to doubt if i should get it so early. I am also contemplating of the idea of waiting for Ducati to sort out all those little problems before getting one. It would not be too nice to be one of those "lucky ones" having to book the bike in and out of the service centre to rectify all these issues.

Also don't forget that there will be many many more owners who do not participate in these forums.

I too am still on order, am I going to wait until next year? No, if there are problems I will get them sorted. If no problems I will have a great time riding the bike.

that's the price of the first year's model (if it's not from japan)...
i was willing to pay it. had my starter failing 2x during the disconnected flapper valve phase, sinc it's on again, it's better (1st or 2nd attempt)

got my battery tender yesterday, connected it and had the red light on (charging) for more than 12 hours? wondering if the battery has not been fully charged (i've ridden 700 miles in the past 3 weeks)

will see and report if anything has changed ever since.
will also go ahead and connect the voltmeter to see the drop while starting!

I agree,

Jap. bike are much more reliable than Ducati. But can't be compared to the look of Ducati. On the other hand, it is very embarrassing when your 25k bike refuses to start near a restaurant terrace ... plenty of people.

For 2 1/2 year, I had a Lotus Exige that used to stall occasionally at the idle or on red light. With a Lotus, people will laugh at you, with 20K car, people will take pity on you. After 2 1/2 years, the dealer never been able to fix it, so I sold it and bought a Corvette ZR1 ... over 2 years, never had any problem. :)

that's definately not the norm for the tender, When I first put the battery tender on this bike (after having for a week). The red light stayed on a couple minutes at most, then flashing green for a few minutes, and then solid green.

Also, check your battery voltage after taking it off the tender, it should read around 13+. It's known that some battery tenders are malfunctioning even when brand new.

My battery stays on the tender.

Today my bike gave me fits all day.

It starts up fine when cold, or if it's still relatively hot.

Anything between 120F-160F, and I'm having issues. My belief is it's the starter. It sounds weak cold or hot.

Today I tried 5 times to crank mine at one point. I decided to find some shade, and waited a couple hours. Once the bike had cooled down to 110F it fired right up.

Even with the issues I'd buy the bike again. It's such a confidence inspiring bike, and handles like a dream.

Mine's going into the shop next week, and there keeping it until they figure it out.

Oh yeah, props to Sebastian the owner of Mellimoto. I sent him an email while stopped and laying in the shade. Within minutes I had a response.

Yep, best to get it in as will only get worse and might strand you. Starter issues have happened on a number of bikes.

Got stuck two times today. Bike will not turn over with starter. I had to push start the thing after it cooled down. im finally home after a pretty frustrating day. The bike will no longer start.

Likely failed starter. Dealer will replace. I would call them to give them heads up to get one on order if they haven't already.

What's the best way to bump start the bike? I've never had to do if before but I have the awful feeling that I might need to with this one.

Are you familiar with how to bump start a car or another bike?

Process pretty simple, put in 2nd gear or 3rd gear, hold in clutch, get vehicle rolling (down hilll is easiest, but you can always run beside bike and then hop on). Once vehicle going about 5mph, quickly release clutch to spin engine, then engage clutch again as to not stall.

The reason you have to hop on a bike is your weight will push the rear tire into the pavement and prevent it from just locking up and skidding.

Be careful not to drop your bike. Sucks to get winded, then fall over in a sweaty embarrasing mess.

Thanks Chris - I've done cars but never a bike (just been lucky I suppose and only been riding about 3 years). Thanks for the clear explanation.
