ahh i have that never used it come to think of it i never use cruise at all. good to know my radar in my car will be beeping like crazy. trauma where did you get your Velcro from. i got mine from lowes very industrial strength but i want more coverage like what you cut for yourself.

After searching millions of listings on Amazon, I just went to Home Depot ;)

Laser interceprtor & BT

So I installed the Sena Bluetooth transmitter & headset, hooked it up and went for a spin.

The Sena headset works well at communicating a laser alert, I can hear the alert voice & alarm clearly despite having earplugs.

I have a .... load of wires under my seat but the install is clean from the outside.

Have to fit the mount for the V1 soon but it's really only needed when riding out of town here.

Still haven't received any of the visual alert products so no update there!

In my humble opinion...

I was a Police Officer for a couple of years and since then I'll never spend a single dollar on a radar detector and here is why...

1) Cops know that detectors are on the road so how do they beat them?

By leaving them off and toggle them on and off when the vehicle visible to the officer. Therefore if you are riding along on a turn or hills and you have no warnings on your detector suddenly your detector goes off and then stops, then its too late. Your speed is locked. It's not hard to for the officer to know hear and see when a car is coming and as soon as he knows you are at a distance to get a positive lock on thats when he flips it. Its even easier for a cop to know when a motorcycle or rice rocket car is coming (sound). It's the lazy officer that just leaves the radar on hoping for a speeder without radar.

2) I like most cops only leave the radar on during calls. Why?

Because cops know that detectors are on the road so if the officer is going to a call or to lunch or the donut shop (insert jokes here) and going from point A to point B with no intention of stopping then the majority will just drive with their radar constantly on just to slow everybody that spent hundreds of dollars on a detector that is making them slow down for a cop that is not even tracking them or has any intention of pulling them over. It's a plus to cops that they are making the roads "safer" with just leaving it on. Everyone with a radar detector thinks their radar is saving them from a ticket and that it was totally worth it but its a sort of reverse psychology just to make you slow down.

3) What's the tool of choice the majority of cops that perform traffic enforcement use?

With the current technologies lasers are the preferred method of tracking vehicle speeds by departments that actually have a traffic division (cops that do nothing but traffic, accidents, speeding tickets etc).

Another point and shoot when you are ready tool for traffic enforcement. Not constantly left on so radar/laser detectors just alert you after the fact that you have been zapped. The way to beat that is laser jammers which returns a scrambled or error message back to the officer. Jammers are best utilized with a sort of warning device (lights/sounds) so that you the rider knows that a officer is attempting to lock on to you repeatedly so that would be your cue to slow the hell down now. Reason why is that savvy cops know that their lasers are not meant to give error messages and if they know that you're speeding with their calibrated eye (insert more jokes here), and not slowing down, especially if you're driving something sporty and expensive, then the chances are that you can afford a laser jammer and they will then pull you over under a bogus PC (probable cause) just to inspect your vehicle to see if you have a easy to find jammer tucked behind a fairing for bikes or bumper/grill for cars.

As for me, I'll never waste money on a radar detector but to each their own. I think you're better off using your head and especially your eyes to scan for cops in their usual hiding spots (after blind turns, hills, tucked in commercial parking lots etc) If I had the money to spend (about 1k or so) , I'd invest in a laser jammer but until I have everything I want on this 1199 (CF, pipes, bling) I'll hold off.

Ride safe and don't day dream while speeding. Keep an eye out and scan for cops

The main reason radar detectors are effective is most cops are lazy, and just like to sit back with it constantly on. They catch enough people that way, they rarely wait for a fast moving car and use instant on. I know this as an avid detector user from back in the 70s "Fuzbuster" days. And with instant on, a lot if times you detect him hitting the guy in front of you. If none none these work, you can still rabbit or call your lawyer :D

I'm principally using a laser defence system. In metro areas all our speed cameras are laser poliscan. In the country however the police sit just inside city limits, if I get a ping ill slow down, good reminder. You can never legislate against the smart radar operator that lights you up at the last minute. I'd rather spend less time looking at my dash and more at the road.

To each their own but it he good news is that most veteran cops (in cars) won't bother going into pursuit after a crotch rocket already going over 130mph because they know the outcome 95% of the time. POOF the bike vanishes. It's the rookie cops that want a good story to tell to their friends of how they chased down a bike or season cops in sport cruisers (like mustangs, chargers, Camaros etc) or motorcycle cops that aren't afraid to try to chase you down.

*Note* you can outrun motorcycle cops one on one during a long high speed pursuit but you have to be really good because the cops on bikes are really good. Keep in mind that motorcycle cops rarely work alone so I really recommend against running from a bike cop but if u do try to keep the rubber side down and keep your lawyer's number handy! :D

I used to do that in my younger/stupid days, as I mentioned had stickers on my fairing for each chase. All you need to do is make one turn they don't see! Hard to out run a radio though. In this "game", you can always win, and never get pulled over - just go the speed limit!

Where's the fun in doing the speed limit?

The stickers for each chase cracked me up! lmao :p

With all due respect officer, this is simply false. I know it and you know it...for a fact. I'm not going to argue with you out on this because I don't want to start a silly online disagreement but you copy and paste this from somewhere, didn't you? Really?

To be honest, I actually NEED the officer to believe this is the truth. Only helps me. For that reason, I have no intention to explain it to you or how it works for us. You just go ahead and stop vehicles when you get an error message on your laser, please continue to simply use instant-on with your ordinary radar, go ahead and hide around a curve or corner believing that I drive with my eyes closed and depending on a lousy radar detector 100%, and please please please just leave your radar running while you are parked at the coffee shop, yeah that will slow me down for sure. LOL :)

Ok gents lets leave that particular discussion for another thread.

You are correct that its not worth a silly online disagreement just to keep the masses entertatined but you need to pay more attention to detail. At the start of my comment was "In my humble opinion" key word opinion. I was posting my opinon as to why I wouldn't spend a single dollar on a radar detector along with reasons why I wouldn't spend a dollar from a former peace officer's experience and views. I have no need to copy and paste my experiences and opinions from elsewhere. No where in my comments did it state that this is the book on catching speeders or this is how its done nor this is how you get caught. There are tons of tools, equipment, stratagies and tactics used by the officers to enforce traffic. And a good traffic division and department would rotate them as to attempt to maintain peak effeiciency. Don't be nieve to believe that my opinion as to why I personally would not purchase a radar detector is the standard for all officers. I dont know how cops at Overland Park KS do it and I really don't care. I'm not a officer anymore and I really dont care if you have a radar detector or not. To each their own. I didn't just start riding so please save the "I don't know how it work for us" speech of yours. I do know. It's you that doesn't know how it is for cops, and I provided some of what I did when I was one. Believe what u want and be as cool as you want. Just try not to hurt yourself or others as you do it. Just have fun and ride.

It depends....I ride through Houston all the time to get to the country roads. On Houston freeways I just run with traffic. Speeding through town doesn't get you where you are going more than maybe a minute sooner, and their is no thrill cruising at "go to jail" speeds on a crowded freeway.

But on the back roads that I run every weekend (usually both Saturday all day and Sunday morning) the radar has given me plenty of warning of a cop many, many times. I have found that 99% of the time, they are either running with it on all the time, or they don't turn it on at all. As a note, on some back roads I run a lot it is very common for me to pass a county Sheriff that does not turn his radar on at all even when they see me. And they never use Lasar on the back roads.

BTW, talked to a nice guy on a Tri Color this morning out in the country. I was on my BMW. We were Southwest of Houston. If you are on this forum - thanks for taking the time to talk for a few minutes!

I am in agreement with u. Not worth to regularly speed in the city to save minutes of commute or to just look cool going fast and I can't think of many times that I've heard of lasers being used on back roads plus there's less of a chance of running into departments with lasers. Up here around Dallas it's just the city cops that have lasers. County Sheriffs typically don't budget for lasers and State Troopers that may have them will spend about 2/3rds of their time on interstates and more focused enforcement on semi trucks but there's a much smaller chance of walking away with just a warning from Troopers. Personally I think there's too many badges in Texas maybe cause of all the land but makes me miss the California coast and mountains even more.

I would definitely use a radar detector if I got one as a gift because something is better than nothing but I think it's a waste of $ in my opinion. :)

Visual Alert in action

So this is the 10 LED Visual Alert in action - don't think I'm going to miss it. Very bright, haven't tried it in the daylight but sure it will stand out and saves running a wire back to the Bluetooth unit under the seat. Got a refund on the HARD unit, wouldn't bother with something else in my helmet.

good video, yes please check that in the daytime with your helmet on. yours looks awfully bright and flashy but i only have the 1 row. also yours might be mounted higher (on top of something)? i may need to reposition mine.

Hey kensteele - mine happens to be sitting on top of the laser sensor but ultimately its the angle that counts - the thing works better when the recess that the LEDs sit in is directly aligned with your sight when you glance down. I noticed that if it is angled down a bit and you lose some of the brightness. I ordered one angled at 60 degrees from horizontal but I think 65 or may even 70 might be correct because I'm using an extra piece of Velcro to angle it more.

The final job I have to do is to find strong enough Velcro solution to sit the V1 under the nose of the bike, although I then miss the directional alerts. I do have a RAM mount but I'm not a big fan of the V1 sitting so obviously on the bike.

All the talk of needing radar detectors and cops giving tickets really makes me miss Germany. Driving in Germany just spoils you and takes all the fun out when returning to the States since you realize just how crappy and heavily restricted driving in the "Land of the Free" really is. Why can't we have nice things?

I have "industrial strength" velcro from Home Depot holding my Cobra i200 there, but it was only $129. I am thinking any adhesive under constant pressure is bound to give eventually. :(

Ye I think I might try and work out some sort of bracket/safety thing, wouldn't want it falling into/under wheels or interfering with steering. Got smashed in the surf today so not riding anywhere for a while ;)

Smashed in surf? Jerk! My shoulder is sore from shoveling/plowing snow last week :)
