For riding around on the street, get the 959.

It has more power than anyone will ever need on the street, it is much cheaper, insurance will be cheaper, it still looks and sounds cool.

.

I'm with Chris on this the 959 will more than meet your needs.

Where I am the cost difference between base and s is only a comparable $4000. It was not even a factor, i like the look of the base better. If I wanted forged wheels I would not buy the ones on the S and now I still have the option. The forks are larger in diameter and they don't have wires sticking out the top.... 959 did not exist when I bought, but I would still go for 1299 above 959, the low down torque is cool for the daily commute, and you can sleep at night, never wondering about that 1299....
Fuel economy and range should be another factor to consider though.

If you CAN afford the 1299s the smoothness of that ride on the street will trump all, if you can't afford a 1299 period... Don't do it, take my word for it the other services alone will gouge your pockets... I'm 2000mi away from the 15,000 mark which is the mark to adjust the valves... And Ducati Newport said it will cost roughly $2,200......

Find another dealer. They're trying to fck you (or actually they're trying to fck your wallet).
15k service (if you don't need valve adjusting - and most don't) should be in $1200 range. Add another $600 if the valves need adjusting.

1200-1800 per 15k miles is pretty standard stuff for Ducs. My 748s required 6k mile service costing around 500-600. An m900 about the same. My old 750ss I did myself. The point being that Duc Newport is trying to fck you and your bank account. You should walk away from that kind of thievery.

Honestly.. I've done that with every bike I've ever owned. I would never buy a bike from a dealer.. ever. You're always going to pay retail, and no one likes that!

These guys are all throwing down $28k + tax + freight for the Anniversario edition -- pshhh.. What a waste when you can buy the same bike in a year for $22k out the door.

I have money to spend, but opt to spend it wisely.

Lol that's not a waste..... If you have to WAIT A YEAR for the bike, by that time, it lost its WOW factor lol

It always makes me chuckle when people say stuff like this :D

I must also confess that sometimes I wake up at 4:37 and wonder if I should have gotten the S, still better than being up all night with a 959 in the garage! [emoji6]

Loses WOW factor after a year? Have you ever been to a classic car or bike show?.. What am I saying.. You're right. Anything older than 1 year should be thrown in the garbage.

If you need me, I'll be bulldozing my 3 yr old home.. Thanks for the insight.

Having brought a 899 first (In Australia it cost the same as your 1199s) After 3-5 months I was regreting why I didnt just bite the bullet, spend the extra and get the base 1199.

I have a riding partner buy a 959 (even when I said get a 1299) saying "i dont need all the power for the street etc etc" After being left behind on a casual ride which had S1000RR and new R1 he now has a 1299. If you can afford the S get it. If you cant get the base.

people who buy a bike as new and paying full price are doing it not because they are "not wise". they are doing it because they want a new bike and because they have money. you cant say it's a waste because you can be seen as an ignorant person. just my 2 cent

I respect that reply. It'll be a fantastic bike brand new or with a few miles on it.

I'm too practical is the problem! I like to have my cake and let someone else pay the depreciation.

Still.. congrats on the new ride!

He is right. Sportbikes lose that "Wow factor" after a year as far as resale goes.

The general public doesn't know .... about bikes. I could ride around on my 2006 R1 and it would get just as many looks and points as my new RSV4. They are all "Ninjas" as far as the public is concerned. So as far as the general public is concerned, sure the wow factor is there for years and years. BUT, that doesn't apply to resale. Bikes can depreciate as much as 25-30% in just one year.

The "classic" thing doesn't come in till way later. There is a huge 20+ year gap between the time something is just "old", and it actually becoming a "classic". And that is largely dependent on its condition. Right now a 1993 Camaro is just an old piece of ..... But 20 years from now, if somebody still has one in new condition, it will be a classic.

BTW - you cant compare houses to vehicles. Houses sometimes go up in value over time, and even a house that is 80yrs old can easily sell as long as it is in good shape.

No, you aren't always going to pay retail.

I buy brand new bikes because I like them. There is no better feeling than getting the keys to a brand new, unmolested bike. No dirt, scratches, marks, 0 miles (or close to it) on the odometer. It is awesome.

Sure, that newness wears off and at the end of the day, a used one gets you to the store just as good. But to me, that joy of having a brand new bike is worth the extra money.

Wise money is the money you spend that makes you happy without compromising your ability to retire comfortably when you want. As someone who is nearing his 64th birthday and a couple of years from retirement, I can tell you that you become very focused on financial security.

I've spent a lot of money on fast cars, boats, and motorcycles....the rest I just pissed away. I have enough savings right now to work two more years then retire without changing my lifestyle. I've bought 62 four wheel vehicles, 16 two wheel, and 4 boats (with a total of 7 engines). Of all of those vehicles only two were bought used.

Makes me think of that good old joke, at retirement man sits and sais : I have spent all the money I made in my life on fast cars, bikes, women and booze, the rest I just wasted.[emoji6]

Yes, as you get older, your memory bank will provide more and more entertainment. On the other hand, if you're struggling under heavy payments, the fancy toy will lose its allure very quickly and you end up selling or trading in with a heavy loss.

I mostly bought new because I want all the miles to be mine; I don't want to wonder what kind of miles went on (was it broken in right?) before I got it. Quite often, you can score well on very nice used bikes if you know what you're doing. I just don't want to guess. Plus I can afford it. I could have quite a bit more money in the bank but the memories of the newness is very fun for me (as Chaotic pointed out earlier).

ra210 - logic (but that really matters little in Duc Land) says 959; if your heart (counts for a lot in Duc Land) says 1299S then get that WHEN you can afford it. When they're marked down with factory incentives sitting on the floor after a year, it may be in your territory. You can knock $3K off before incentives if you negotiate. Otherwise find a nice used one if that's acceptable to you.

if there's the slightest desire to get the 1299S, get the 1299S, anything else, you'll regret it later on.

Personally, if don't care about the badge on the fairing, the 959 is hell of a bike, it can do 99% of what you want on the street, or 99% of what you should be doing on the street.

If i could afford the SL, no question i would get it. Not to say the 1299, the R, or 959 is any lesser of a bike. But you need to follow your heart.

I have just sold my 899 (Fantastic bike once I remapped it and upgraded the suspension). The 959 is even better. Just the right amount of hp on the road and a reasonable tank range and cheaper on tyres and insurance.

Double sided swing arm is lighter and is a better engineering solution.

Love the upshifter (I put one on my old race bike too) but I couldn't give a .... about a down shifter.

The engine after remapping it was simply brilliant and I could con myself that I was the bikes master. The 1199 never fails to remind me that I am a novice and incapable of riding the bike to anywhere near it's potential on a public road).

Only thing I didn't like was the really heavy rear wheel (God that thing is heavy).

To my mind the perfect road bike would be a 959 S (with top notch suspension and forged wheels).

They are all good bikes: if it's for city riding get the slowest one it will save you from losing your license :)

1299S is my vote. I had the 1199 base and regretted not getting the S. I love my 1299S.
