Looking back through some of the early official 1098 development photos, many of which were shot in the same area of the factory as the recent V4 pictures, there were at least three variants shown. Amongst them was one cloaked in a 998 frame and bodywork, another in 999 bodywork and also a D16RR with a complete 999 back end and sub-frame. Does that make the recent V4 pics authentic? Yes, in the sense that its a real bike but not necessarily in the clothing it will finally end up in. That's my view. Subterfuge at it's best.
The recent photo of Stoner "conveniently" shows you everything yet nothing at the same time, since about the only thing that's easily distinguishable is the new rear light and a partial view of the enormous exhaust. Not much to go one but then we can expect more teasers such as these to crop up, as November draws closer. Typical M.O. from the Bologna marketing machine. Whoever took the photo would have had ample opportunity to take it from a far more revealing angle judging by it's clarity, which smacks of collusion. Even Stoner can't out-ride a decent camera's shutter speed. Chaz Davies has also been testing the bike so we'll possibly see yet more indeterminate images surface soon.
