What's your opinion the TechnoReasearch, Inc. kit that was purchased in that thread?

I have no experience of this product..... But I am aware of Ducatis ability to see if the Ecu has been accessed by 3rd party software and that concerns me from a warranty point of view....Maybe a great product... I just wonder about the wisdom of using such a thing given that the dealer can reset the indicator very quickly and at little or no charge (if you know the right people)... I would rather just do my own oil changes and ignore the indicator....its cheaper and less injurious to the warranty status..... IMHO...

dont pry your cap off. you will ruin it.
Unscrew the 2 screws off the cap and you will notice there are threads on the cap wich you can fit a larger bolt into. I dont know the exact size but I found a couple metric bolts that fit and it gave me handles to wiggle the ting out.

The early oil filter caps never had any threads to put screws into to use as handles or jacking screws.
Those of us with the early bikes will be stuck with carefully prying/wiggling them off, as we have always done:(
There's no damage to mine so far:)

The newer caps with the threads, came out about the start of the 2013 year models;)
I think you'll find the threads are standard pitch M8 threads.
 
Mine is a 2013 with 12500 kms and I just changed the oil and filter. The thread is M8x1.25. You need two bolts about 30mm in length. Older model housings can be tapped to suit. Makes the job really easy.
 
When removing filter cap, do not pry with levers screw drivers etc, the bore for the stock retaining cap screws are tapped for M8x1.25 so just gently wind in 2 M8 bolts evenly the cap will release without damaging the crank case or filter cap

It doesn't work on the earlier bikes.
 
Oil Filter Cover Unit - Modify or Replace

For 2012 oil filter cover units - tap the M8x1.25 threads into your housing once it is off using a taper or intermediate tap.

If you are not mechanically minded you could buy a new housing from Ducati and swap it over at oil change time:

Gents, i don't post much here as most of you cover it all and it's great, but let me say that who ever at ducati engineered the oil filter cover totally forgot about "how to take it off".

45min of "careful" prying, taping, etc. and i finally got that bitch off, pita. Every other bike i've owned, F4i, ZX-10R, RC51 and still my ZX-6 race bike is easy enough for an idiot to do, but jesus that ducati engineer should be fired.

on a different note, this is the oil drain bolt, notice the "shavings" it collected, thoughts? is this common?

bike is about 2k on the clock, dash replaced once so going off what i recall before it was replaced.

also, the tech manual say every other oil change to basically take the entire oil pan off etc. to "...clean the oil pickup gauze filter"? blow it out w/compressed air? that seems like another joy of maintaining this bike, anyone done it?

On my 2014, and I assume this may have been a revision at some point, after you remove the screws holding the oil filter cover on you'll notice the holes in the cover are threaded. Coincidentally, they are the same size as the kickstand bolts. So...if you thread bolts into the holes, which are larger than the bolts which hold the cover on, you'll very easily remove the oil filter cover w/o issue.

That being said...if your cap isn't threaded, buy a tap and a couple of bolts that are larger than the ones that hold the cover in place. You'll be amazed how easy it comes off.
 
roger on the drain bolt and will do the next go around on the oil change. this is the least i've ridden in the last few years, so i know it won't be until next dec i go through this agony and will tap the cover holes then.

Yeah I am with the other supporting guys. Good on you for having a go and doing it yourself. And good on you for the honest post about the mess.

I enjoy working on the bike myself. Its not about the money. If you do not have the threads in the cover here is a picture or two on how simple it is to do yourself with an 8mm thread tap.

45 minutes must be a new record;)

1-2 minutes is all it should take, even though it's still a pain:(

Regarding the porcupine quills on the drain plug magnet.
I've seen them worse and I've seen them better.
In every case the wear metals has settled down by about the second or third oil change.
I also think the quick shifter actuation may generate more wear metals. If you're inclined to use it at all.

well understand i wasn't about to just yank the "...." out of something i've never worked on before and i didn't really have anything good enough that was "delicate" enough to grip it, plus i've learned slower and done right is better than faster and fkin it up.

i do everything myself unless it requires breaking the cases open and that includes the cars and truck.

thanks for the pic brad, i'll get a tap kit to add to the tool collection.
 
Lets add that the 13 bikes have the oil filter cover threaded for ease of pulling the cover off.

2 of your large bolts in your box used for attaching your passenger footpegs work perfectly.

Yup, that worked for me.
 
Hey guys simple question.

How much different is the oil level through the sight glass with the bike on the ground vs. on a pitbull stand?

I'm sure it is different, but can we just compensate for it?
 
The bike just need to be level, doesn't have to be on the ground. I normally have the bike on front stand (garage stand) so I would just jack the rear up and rest it on a piece of wood the same thickness as how much the front tyre is above the ground.
