first off the whole purpose of this is you dont get what you pay for with the 1199 i cant understand why people are still seeing this as a bmw vs ducati post. i could have used the r 1. for 15k i would have never ever had a problem and saved 15k with all the upgrades i had to do on the ducati. then people would post its not exotic or whatever no soul and all that bs that people say to justify their purpose.
all that being said i know there are some problems on the bmw site however all the bmw owners I know (me personally) have never had a problem. At the same time i know (personally) plenty of 1199 riders that have real problems.
im not talking about your friends brothers friend who knows a guy that his engine failed type of stuff. im talking ring ring hey mark did your pani have this issue with the dash cause mine just crapped out.
It's fair enough to say we aren't getting what we paid for, but a few points. First, products are not marketing at what is fair, they are marketed at what price people will pay. The Ducati is an exclusive bike and people actually like it that way. Yes, if enough people like you decide they made a mistake, then Ducati has to rethink their product and their business model.
But honestly, would you be more willing on dealing with the problems and shortcomings if it were $5000 cheaper? I really don't think so. I have a $75,000 BMW car. I read on forums all the time about BMW's lack of quality and when I sold my Lexus everyone on that forum said "you'll be back". Fortunately I have not had any real problems, but yes - there are some annoying things about the car that I don't think it should have for that price. But I still don't regret it because overall it's a hell of a car.
I think there are plenty of us who don't feel cheated by the extra $5000 we paid for the Panigale because it functions as we expected it to - it feeds our desire (ego if you want to call it that) to have something with the extra Cache that the name "Ducati" gets us. It is very light and nimble, it is very fast, it does have a full suite of features that no Japanese bike offers (some offer some of the features, but none offers all of the features).
It's okay to not like the bike, to feel like it's not worth the money, to feel cheated etc. I suspect that everyone here understands where you are coming from or why. Isn't it nice to have choices?
