If I knew then what I know now

i bought the bike before i saw it just a few pictures. i was not counting pennies just when i see what i could have gotten now for the LESS money it annoys me a little bit. i expected the BEST BIKE FOR THE MONEY I SPENT. little did i know i bought a bike that couldnt beat a 3 year old s1000rr

Isn't that a little bit like your missus buying the most expensive italian handbag expecting it to be functional and put things in it?!?!

Ahh the old hindsight is 20/20. I speak to a lot of 1199 owners on here and in person privately and I get the same reaction. The forum just masks excuses for Ducati cause people don't want to admit a 20k mistake but I'll be totally honest here and admit the 1199 was my biggest purchase mistake and the experience will keep me from ever purchasing a Ducati again. I have had old heat shield problems, new heat shield problems, a melting fairing, a melting rear hugger, bolts fly off, rear set swing arm problem ( although that is an aftermarket purchase), signal issue and paint problem. I have the bike since June 2012. Problem is in the first 2 years you can't get rid of the bike you lose too much.

The reaction to every person I ask is the same a wincing like pain reaction. What do you think of the bike. I get well and a face like you have stomach cramps saying its good but....

I am also a member of the s1000rr forum. I can tell you these complaints are not really posted. Neither are they on the r1 forum. I know it happens to all makes but nothing is like it is with the 1199. I think what could have been if Ducati actually thought things through. With the most amazing looking bike yet you have to spend 30k to get the kind of performance the base should have. Keep in mind you can get an hp4 for 20k which will stay with an r anytime and is the price of a base with a full system and it's a titanium full akra exhaust system far and a way better quality than termi.

This is what the 1199 should have been and the reviews it should get.

2013 BMW HP4 Onboard Video Review

I know this will get blasted but the next time you have a dash problem bolt problem or an oil leak or your decision is what to do about an extended warranty or it takes you 3 hours to change the oil and coolant remember this post.

I seen the HP 4 this weekend and it's beautiful! I did'nt even notice the nose that I hate so much... that being said it's still stunning in person.

I will be the first to admit owning a Ducati was my dream, and when they introduced the 1199... I was sold on the looks did'nt much care about performance, but the simple things are annoying... my bike is somewhat of a garage queen simply because I'm always on travel but when I am home and take her out well things start to fall off lol.

I am bit of a bike and safety nerd and practice TCLOCS every time... so electronics fluids nuts bolts etc... get a once over. I've always heard the Ducati brand had reliability issues, but was under the impression that they was sorted out, but this is not the case. Every brand has it's issues and no brand is perfect but most get it 98% right as far as it starting when its time to go!

As I told Mark and Gunny this was my last sports bike so it's here to stay so I will be shelling out the extra cash for extended warranty just for the piece of mind, which I wish I didnt have to do, cause I be damn if I drop 6k on some motor issue!

K5 gsxr 1000 runs just as hard and good as the day I brought it.
oh and the paint issue how can I forget that... went to wax it awhile back and notice a run in the clear coat... so I have to do the warranty claim for that, which I guess I should do soon cause the factory warranty is ticking away.

With all the above being said... when I come home after a long trip and see the Panigale as the garage door comes up I'm still in awe of the beauty but her beauty is only skin deep... she has some self esteem issues for sure.

A true believer:)

lol. True**.

I must say that after having owned a succession of Ducs in 80s/90s I lost interest in all the post-748/916 (and their variations) machines. All the TerBlanche designed machines I detested. And had lost interest in the marque.
Until I saw the Panigale and heard it. And thought "finally, a machine worthy of the name".

I don't particularly care that it's not the fastest machine in the paddock. Or that other machines have more so-called "bang for the buck". Or that other machines are reportedly less quirky or supposedly have less maintenance issues. Or that the others are cheaper. I have a long history with the Ducati brand. I know they can be quirkly. I know they can have maintenance issues if you don't stay on top of 'em. I knew all of that going in when I bought this one. None of these assertions are new to me.

I've had a few bolts come loose. I've had some air get into the slave clutch cylinder. I've had the "turn signal electrical TSB881" issue. I've had the electronics suddenly go crazy and return odd error codes in the rain and then suddenly clear like nothing had happened. All of the quirky stuff. And none of it has fazed me.

Because at the end of the day, I'm riding a Ducati. All of those other bikes (the Beemers, the Yams, the Kawi's,) are good, reliable, finished, developed products and are very good motorcycles. But they can't deliver the experience a well sorted Ducati can. And that's the difference.

They aren't Ducatis.

** (yes, true believer. I bleed Ducati Red, lol)

Ha ha, sorry guys.

I mean when you buy an exotic italian sports bike it's never going to be practical or cheap, but you buy it because you love it, the looks of it, whatever and even though it has faults and you know it does you just don't care and you will own it whatever.

Like when the wife buys a tiny pretty designer handbag. You think 'What's the f**king point of that?!' But she doesn't care, it matches her shoes and looks great, too small to actually put anything in but she loves it.

Same with the 1199, others don't get it, that's fine, but to me it's the best god damn machine out there.

I just spent the past hour rummaging through several BMW forums and easily found no less than 15 unique accounts of S1kRR and HP4 owners complaining about various issues, one of which included a 600 mile HP4 with a destroyed motor after four days of ownership. I would be surprised if the number of documented issues with the BMW was any less than the Panigale, let alone significantly so.

Like several other 1199 owners I made the decision to buy mainly on the pictures and previous experience of owning Ducati's I work away in Africa most of the year so only ride when in the UK on vacation, however when I am home I do get some miles in.

I have ridden the 1199 to Italy for Ducati World week with a pillion and luggage, I have been to Assen for the MotoGP I have done plenty of miles around the UK and have taken the bike out on track a couple of times. So nearly five thosuand trouble free miles on all sorts of roads, no electronics issues, no bolts falling off and the paintwork is still gleaming.

And as mentioned by other people when I get home to the UK and open the garage door there is always a beautiful 1199 Tricolore waiting for me, obviously I am Ducati biased but don't think I would get the same buzz opening the garage door to many other bikes ?

As for performance as I say I have done some track days and can honestly say that even with all the electronic aids switched on it is still much much more bike than I could ever exploit, S100RR, ZX10R GSXR on paper maybe all faster but on track I have passed and been passed by all of the above so at the end of the day if we can afford it I guess we ride what we like the most ? for me that will always be Ducati !!

I can't help but wonder, with people saying that BMW owners have a similar amount of issues.....if Mark started out on the BMW, I wonder if he'd be doing this same thing, but on the BMW forum, and deciding to switch and try a Pani because of "all the issues with the BMW".

That's not a shot at Mark, I'm just wondering if it's true that both bikes have issues, and Mark is just more familiar with the issues accompanying the Pani since it's all he has known thus far, so that rules his view point.....I guess we'll find out in April. :D

Owning the 1199 compared to all the other I4's is more like your smoking hot passionate mistress buying some more sexy under ware and lingerie on your account, then when ever you meet expecting everything to be like it is with your value for money plain-Jane, practical wife:D
