Low sided my 1199R yesterday and need some advice

Same situation here. Low sided on the street, cosmetic damage. It was totaled by insurance because we all know that a couple of plastics, a mirror and clip-on are the price of a new bike. :/

I bought armor bodies and will track the bike and am slowly picking off the OEM pieces on ebay. I can have it back to stock for $3-4k max, be it for future sale or keeping it.

I am selling my 848 and will use that plus insurance payoff to buy a second 1199 for street this way I don't have to spend 3 hours switching fairings every time. Added bonus I will have the same bike type on the street and track, so the feel and learnings is consistent.

I estimate myself lucky as this turned out quite allright, save for losing my "good driver discount" for insurance :)

Phl, what tank cover are you using? Link? That may be a very good addition to the track one.

Good Luck with your rebuild whatever way you chose to go.

My left side low side a couple weeks ago resulted in very similar damage. I am now completely understanding as to why certain Insurance companies raised their Ducati premiums four or five-fold because dropping an 1199 with enough speed results in $10,000-$15,000+ in damage, YIKES!

My left side got trashed as well, tank, fairings and tail are done, shock got some dinging as well as the left side Termi exhaust pipe. Tail light managed to pop out and fly off, as well as the tail inner air vent flew out and landed somewhere in the tracks grass. Even my damn little battery cover flew off on impact and landed in the grass.

This will be the last time I can file an insurance claim without simply pricing myself out of ever affording to insure a car/bike again. Should I drop it again it will be an out of pocket fix.

I know when I get around to fixing up my R I will be buying cheap flleabay fairings to track this bike. No $4000 carbon from Belissimmoto or Shiftech, not happening. Be smart, go aftermarket if you plan on continuing to track your 1199. Maybe pick up an extra set of cheap chinese bar ends/levers and pick up an extra in case you should ever go down again (hopefully not, but preparedness rocks!).

Entire left side of my bike is trashed. Part quote: $18,XXX.XX plus tax. $20K low side. God I pray insurance doesn't total mine and take it as my R is my baby.

In the end, I'm buying an HP4 for the street, and plan on keeping my R, fixing it up and sticking to it being a track-only bike.

Glad you're okay. thats all that really matters.

In my experience, and for an R owner I've got a lot of experience (10,500 miles, 2,500 plus of those on track--and I'm not as cautious a rider as I should be--on the track) our bikes crash really well--especially in low sides--IF you've got protection.

I use the Sato engine sliders, Speedymoto fork sliders, Woodcraft clutch cover and Rhinomoto bar end sliders. (The stock clutch cover and DP protection is a bit of a joke.)

That combination has saved me a lot of grief (and $) over the past year. It has been enough to prevent almost all damage to the tank and the plastics in low sides at speeds ranging from 30 to 80 mph.

Really tough aftermarket clip-ons, levers and rear sets would be of use too--I'm going to explore those options before next year.

self made. with enough interest i'd set up a small batch of "nice" ones.

this one was a quick and dirty job without mold, and added handles for my passengerina

with some sanding efforts and filler this one could already have looked nice ;)

Damn Phill,,,
If you ever need some one to hose sit or dog watch call me up,
Just make sure it's not snowing out side..

I would love to put som filler on that tank.

Did you see the covers from Italy? 300 £ easy..
They do not have handles or Kevlar, also the fill cap needs work,,

You are off to an excellent start...

And I'm still doing the little ....,

I do have a dozen small improvements to out bike I haven't seen any one do.

For the heat shield, ceramic coat, heat tape placement, ais plugs&caps, charcoal with delete bolt straight in the head.

But I haven't went all out fiberglass crazy

If your looking to keep doing track days I'd get the DP race plastic set and either plastidip them or have them painted, they seem to hold up better and they fit perfectly

Hi mate.
Did the same with my R and pretty much have similar damage.
Got most of the bits thru Ebay including the tank off an R for about 1/3 of the new price.

Should have got race fairing before. Now I have ordered them from carbonworld.

DP parts are expensive.
Be patient and wait till they show up thru Ebay suppliers and stores. Prices will vary and the shipping can cost a lot too.

You can get the standard fairing parts, then get a sticker kit and run clear coat over them.

All great ideas... Thanks to everyone for providing me with some options.

At this point I believe I'm going to purchase all the base body components/panels from bellissimoto (front fairing is gone to one of the other guys on the forum here).

While I believe I can do the work myself I'm going to have Jordan at AMS Ducati do the work. I'm sure there's a host of fasteners & clips that I will not have. Guessing it's about 4 hours of labor.

Not sure what I'm going to do with the tank at this point. I'll see what Jordan recommends. Maybe a bodyshop can deal with it.

Sato racing sliders. Have had two low sides on my R one of which was at over a 100 mph. The sliders saved me a lot of damage and expense both time, the sliders were toast and the brackets got bent but we were able to straighten them and reuse with improvised sliders from other bikes. I have just referred my second complete set.

The forts off happened with stock body work and the the slider saved most of the bodywork from any significant damage. Just some scuffing and scratches. After that I switched to sharkskinz race bodywork.wisest decision ever.

not only did i aleady hear it a couple of weeks ago... had the pleasure to hear it again after just 1 mile in to the trackday just before the much anticipated 6H of Spa race.. .. a 6usd/mter ride...

was still in warm up lap in a trackday event when some nitwit came by at full race speed and headed for my frontwheel when i was tipping her in. had to manouvre me to the floor to avoid it... bye bye 6H of SPA ...

up side : have enough tires left for the whole of next year... sh...ttttt

Sorry to hear that. I just happen to have all new fairings, race and stock for the 1199.
I will make you a good deal.

OK. Visited AMS Ducati and discussed some alternatives. They had a full used OEM Tricolore body for $1,625. I also considered BellissiMoto's 1199 Base body kit for $740 but they don't have the front ($1,040 with used OEM front on eBay). Also considered the "track kit" which is a full unpainted body kit for under $600 but then I would have to paint it... Finally checked out some of the eBay stuff which is $600-$800.

Thought I would go a different design direction all together. I've always liked Ducati red but I absolutely love white. Had a white S1000RR. Kicked myself when the white 1199S came out after I had purchased my 2012 red 1199S.

So my thought here is to have a white 1199R. Getting a full white eBay body kit for under $600 (may be crap quality but we'll see). My tank needs to be repainted so I'm going to strip it to bare metal, apply Ducati decals and satin clear coat it (the dent could be a challenge with bare metal so I might end up painting it white).

Crossing my fingers. Could look like crap. It will definitely be unique. Hope I like it!

Man I first saw your pics on FB. I feel for you...it's one thing if you do something stupid and crash your bike, it's another when someone else causes it. BTW, congrats on your team's placing at the endurance run! Can't believe your man was setting pace on a stock R! Shows how good the bike actually is.

Low side at the track typically results in scuffed up leathers and maybe a bruised ego! Walking away from a low side on the street is less common.

But I understand. The track is not for everyone.

well said haha, track is way safer

also have a sport bike a not bring it to the track is like date a hot chick without having ... w her...just make no sense

I was at AMS today and saw the bike on the lift... the tank was on the counter and the grip was hanging off the side. I thought, man I know the story on that bike and I said a few words for her. I hope that the restoration goes smoothly and it seems like you have some nice changes in mind.

Good luck!

Small world. You must have been there just before me. I picked up the tank just about noon and took it to a paint & body shop. Apparently they can't pull the dent because of the tank being aluminum and the dent being on the crease of the bend.

So it will have to be painted or wrapped... Thinking a white tank will make for too much white... Hmmmm
