MCN out today - puts R ahead of competition

i can 100% guarantee you that AVERAGE RIDER will do much better on on the HP4 than the Pani, as he will on the Ape! The MV is a heavy clunky thing...

it's quite clear by now that every single review has always qualified how much more difficult it is to ride the Pani, the R being no exception.

I'll concede that point, but I don't think we fundamentally disagree. All I am saying is that if you take average rider A and give him an HP4 he will likely usually beat average rider A on a Panigale. That being said, I am sure you could build up a 1000rr or an R1 that would sweep this field for less than the entry price on the R or the HP4, but that's not apples to apples. This R was tweaked for this specific track and barely edged out the HP4. The BMW smashed the Pani S in the 2012 test when they were both out of the box (if I remember correctly) so that is the basis for my takeaways from the article.

I think the writer of the article would agree with VAST and Capt CF, the message I got from reading the article is that we are bring told that the H4 is superior regardless of the score. Or is that just me? I dont really care about comparos, they are always subjective and you end up picking and choosing whatever fits you best. As of today, the pani is being competitive in superstock and that is what matters

This test was only about lap times around a bumpy circuit all ridden by Neil Hodgson, so it was only his comments.
Yes the Panigale was the fastest, but he said that when they put it on the higher spec race tyres it transformed the bike. The only thing that was "tweaked" was that it had the swingarm pivot set at the -4mm setting to give it better drive. He also said you had to make the engine " sing" and it was as close to a WSBK race bike as you could get. It had the standard exhaust and mapping, so no full Termi's that come with it.
As for the HP4 he said it was the smoothest of the bikes and relatively easy to ride fast probably due to the adaptive electronic suspension which is not even allowed in WSBK. so these two bikes are the standouts, which if you watch World SuperStock it is pretty obvious. The BMW had the Akropovic pipe fitted.

As for the Aprillia he says it has a lack of outright power and torque compared to the Ducati and BMW but that actually makes it easier for the average rider. Downsides are it is small and needs a precise smooth approach, and the bike sounded the best, in standard trim.

As for the MV he hated it, thought it was horrible around this bumpy track, and the fuelling was poor, so it was off the pace.

The Ducati was by far the lightest of all the bikes and weighed 193 kg fully fuelled, he said it would not take much for it to reach a WSBK dry limit of 165kg.

So in summary the Ducati R is about as close to a WSBK race replica as you could get right now but it is a handful, in fact he calls it a sensory overload of epic proportions.
The BMW, Is stunningly smooth and fast while Aprilia is a smooth and non intimidating and both have cutting edge electronics. While the MV is a stunning road bike but needs work to be a race bike.

Cheers

So the BMW and 1199R come with Akra and Termi pipes, respectively.... Yet only the BMW gets to use its upgraded pipes? Oh well it still lost to the " factory" set up bike ;)

The BMW comes equipped with the full akra exhaust that is still road legal. It still has a CAT in it if you look closely. They don't offer 2 exhaust like the pani does, only the one it comes off the line with.

It was at the very fast Pergusa track in Sicily, all bikes ridden by Neil Hodgson, ex WSBK champ all on Pirelli Diablo Super Corse's, the stickier SC 2 compound, and was only about lap times.

Interesting. I rode BMW on track, but I would like to try the Aprilla. They look so tiny and compact, looks like it would be fun.

I know, I was poking at gnance :)

I think they tried to keep the bikes semi stock for the test. Since the duc has no cats in the termi, not "road legal" like the beemer is. Even though they are on the track I know.

Don't ask me why...lol.

Hats off to BMW though for basically putting out a road legal full system that is almost the same as a cat less full system.

DDC takes some getting used to. By its nature, it removes some of the feedback standard suspensions provide to the rider. I got "used to" the way my '11 felt. Even adjusting to the springs prolly being wrong for my weight. it took a bit to stop prepping for the bumps in turns.

But that's neither here nor there imo. These shootouts are mostly promotional. Pani tops one, BMW another, Kawi takes one and eventually someone throws a bone to Honda. In the end it's kinda pointless to worry about what Hodgson can wring out of all these bikes cause 99% of us aren't near his level. Which may means a person might be faster on the BMW than the Pani R simply because he lacks the skill to control the R. Or he may be best suited for CBR1000rr than either.

I mean it's nice to see what a pro can wring out of my bike. But I know I can't do it. If I tried to top out my HP4 coming out of turn 11 at COTA I'd splatter myself on turn 12 cause I can't brake confidently enough from that speed. So what does it matter?

I'm happy riding my own ride :D

kur,

of course it doesn't matter... but it's good to see that finally, after quit a bit of slaying of the Pani, and the xx98 ending up at the bottom of every test heap for 3 years, it is good to see that this one can stick it to the very very best a fierce and ultracompetitive competition can do ! :)

Lol that's why I watch WSBK ;)

What I'd like to see is a Curb Squirrel Rating review. Take all the bikes, park em in front of a college sorority and name the winner based on how many sorority girls are waiting to ask the owner for a ride :D

Every single review is now starting to say what a handful these Panigale's are to ride, and how unstable they are......

Finally. I have been saying this for 18 months since I first turned a wheel on mine. It's a bloody handful that's for sure.

Have calmed mine down a lot, but it's still going to be hard to ride well. Am going to try, but it's certainly not going to come easily!

Yep, that'll do it everytime:)
