No Oil Filter Cartridge in Bike Since New??

I dropped my 1199S off at the dealer yesterday for the 600 mile service, exhaust heat shield update, and 41T sprocket. I got a call today from the sevice manager stating that my bike did not have the oil filter cartridge installed at the factory. I have been riding for 650 miles without an oil filter. They said the oil pressure was low at idle and high at 8000 rpm's. There also were some particles in the oil drain magnet. They will talk to Ducati on Tuesday about replacing or rebuilding the engine. I told them I did not want a rebuilt engine.

My bike does not have ABS. Could I upgrade to the "R" engine and just upload the "R" map to my ecu?

Holey crap!!! That would freak me out, thank god for warranty, not sure if the upload has anything to do with the ABS but probably

Kind of hard to believe that it came from the factory without an oil filter. The dealer will check with Ducati about upgrading to an R engine and I pay the difference. Otherwise, I will push real hard to get a new engine vs. having the dealer rebuild mine.

Yeah.. that sounds kinda bogus to me... no idea what agenda the dealer would have to say that but simply doesn't sound believable...

Hey I think it can happen. Maybe it's a Friday bike but forget about upgrading the motor unless you want to buy one

If it's a rebuild then you only need replace two components to make the engine an R spec.

Pistons and fly wheel. The dealer reflash to raise the RPM by 500 will be the only issue as it may effect the warranty. Ask your dealer!

Ask your dealer how much to have the engine blue printed while it's apart. Most of the expense is normally in the labour cost to pull the engine down and back together!

Serious performance gains to be had.

I will know more on Tuesday after the dealer talks with Ducati. Hopefully they just give me a new engine without any fuss.

Honestly if I were in that boat I would push for the rebuilt motor...

The reasoning being that if they are doing a proper rebuild they are going to do mild machine work which will increase the displacement of the bike. Pay the extra bit for the lightened flywheel and Titanium bits and you will have a motor better than the R for likely the same cost they would have billed for the motor alone. As for the extra 500RPM, there are ECU mods for that... After you get the bike properly tuned!!

If they will do this and still maintain the factory warranty... I'd say go for it!!!

The rebuild motor will be better then a new one if the shop knows what they are doing not to mention that it will take a very long time before they would be able to give you a brand new engine.

If anything they will give you a new motor - they gave Apeluv 2 just for oil leaks. They don't "rebuild" motors, cheaper/faster to pull one off the line.

My only concern with the rebuilt motor is I don't know how good the dealership is at rebuilding motors. I will check with the lead Ducati technician to see how many 1199 motors he has rebuilt.

If that happened to me...I would request for a new engine, in place of your old one... for "peace of mind" . Its under warranty anyways!

That will be better than a rebuilt engine...unless your dealership is known to the racing community for building great race engines.. etc... If not, go for a new engine. You will sleep better!

Have the motor rebuilt forget the R motor . I'm having my motor rebuilt with lighter Carillo rods balancing the crank and machining the flywheel .
If Ducati are taking care of labour the extras will be very little .

Ducati has instructed the shop to tear down the engine and report back on the damage they find. Should know something tomorrow. Luckily, I have another bike to ride.

Well we now know which way he sees the glass.

Good luck Mag. Hopefully you'll be riding it soon!

Ok...I'll retort.

A pessimist sees the glass as half empty,
An optimist sees the glass half full,
I, the realist, knows the glass is just the wrong damn size!
:)

Dealer friend of mine get's 2 per week on average, all send to him directly through Ducati North America, all full rebuilds under warranty for various reasons:D:D
