No V4...

Take these things with a grain of salt. Those rumors didn't just appear out of thin air. There is a storm coming....

I believe Kope mentined a few weeks ago that there were some pushing for the V4 internally, but the marketing team was winning out on keeping the twin. Who knows, maybe they don't even know what they are going to do yet?

"is about to replace the 1299 Panigale superbike range with a new four-cylinder superbike featuring a standard aluminium frame."

There's a lot of wiggle room here - "about to" - when? That makes it sound imminent. I wouldn't expect a new Superbike until 2017 at the earliest. The Panigale series will run at least 5 years like most previous iterations. Then throw in there the standard aluminum frame. I don't think that likely.

They really asked a very specific question; not just about a V4 superbike.

There not going to change anything any time soon. The Panigale is enjoying too much success in the showroom and on the track. Whatever thoughts Ducati bosses had about trickling down the V4 GP bike went away with those aforementioned successes.

He didn't "rubbish" anything. Its like reading a quote from a politician. So full of misleading words.

Last week MCN flew to the Borgo Panigale factory to ask the CEO of Ducati direct if they were planning a four-cylinder superbike of any kind, he said: “No. There will not be a replacement of this kind in 2017 as these rumours have suggested. I can confirm there is no officially confirmed project at Ducati for a four-cylinder engine to replace the Panigale V-twin. There is no Ducati four-cylinder superbike planned.

“We have a V4 MotoGP bike of course. Maybe someone got confused!

“We consider and discuss many, many things but that includes many things that are far from actually happening – but that is natural for a company and normal. I know every project that has been officially approved at Ducati and there is nothing like this right now.”

I've never designed a motorcycle, but I would be fairly confident that a "confirmed project" would be one that has a specific budget allotted to it and would be a pretty dedicated, focused effort. I doubt that the successor to the Panigale is that far in the process.

The V4 thing again, really? Might as well hope that Porsche is going to put the engine in the front of the next 911.

Now that they have the Panigale running up front in WSBK, and looking stronger every outing, I don't see them ditching this design any time soon. It has taken awhile but if they keep going on this same development curve Ducati could become them dominant bike again, like the good old days.

but if you read between the lines...no V-4, conventional frame project. Ok, true. But they still could be working on a street V-4, or (god forbid) a twin in a conventional frame.

I think the frameless design is brilliant, always have. The new Monster series is basically the same thing - a trellis frame instead of a load-bearing airbox. Why not vindicate the original MotoGP design and use a V-4 with a monocoque airbox?

The Panigale and the Superquadro are far from dead. But there will eventually be a successor. Maybe not in 2017, but 2018 or 2019?

Or maybe Ducati will take the Honda Fireblade non-development approach and keep selling the same bike for ten years....lol

ETA: while I was riding home tonight, I was thinking that one of the things I love the most about the Panigale is how crazy narrow it is - this is only possible from the frameless design. In some form or another (like the new Monsters and likely the Diavel replacement), there should be zero frame extending beyond the front of the rear vertical cylinder. That's what I'd say if I were in charge of Ducati.

He didnt rubbish the rumour at all...........

That kind of just fuels it!!! MCN have taken it the wrong way I think?

I pulled up next to my mate with an 848 a little while back. I always thought the 848 was a small bike. The panigale is tiny in comparisson.

I think you are right but Ducati did make a V4 before so the possibility of making a "another" V4 is still out there...even if it is a small chance. :D

All the Ducati Superbikes from before we're all "crazy narrow "

Something needs to replace the Pani in 2017. Kawi will be racing the new 10r next year in WSBK and we see what they've done this year. BMW and Ape aren't standing still either. The fireblade is long overdue for an overhaul. The Superbike rider Marco Melandri will be back on the new R1 next season. We will be swamped by new potent machines on the grid. Ducati can not stand still.

Do people buy Ducati Superbikes because they like riding a twin or because it says Ducati on the tank ?

I bought it because I love the design :) Didn't even bother to test drive it, as I expected the bike to be fast with good handling but uncomfortable to drive anyways. I was only half right :) I absolutely love every bit of it :)
