Overtightened oil drain plug ☠️

Hello everybody,

As you could probably tell, I am sad. I overtightened the drain plug and its freely rotates now. The drain plug threads are damaged. I suspect the casing threads must be damaged too. What are my options?

1) Put sealant and thread back in and see if it works temporarily until the permanent fix?

2) Helicoil/Timesert? I have a new drain plug with new washer on the way already

Ps: 2012 Ducati 1199S which is my first ducati bike. I am not very mechanically inclined and have recently started working on my bikes myself. So may be go easy

A thread insert is best option, if the thread has completely pulled away you won't need to drill it out and could be done in place, however i would remove the sump and fit the insert, i would take it to your local dealer and get them to do it as it's not an easy job if you are not mechanical experienced. You could also find a drain plug from a different bike that is a bigger diameter and just drill and tap it next size up? But thread insert work ok so that's what I would be doing.

If you look at the internal picture, only three threads catch the magcheezium or whatever alloy the sump is made from. (three protrude inside).
It would be okay in steel but 9 turns is normal in alloys. Don't feel bad as it is a lame design.

Do you have any rough idea how much am I looking at in labor for replacement of oil pan?
 
US, I can get shipping in the AM. Changing the pan is very simple, however removing the associated components to get to the pan, may prove challenging given your self evaluated mechanical disposition. It’s all relatively simple in general.

The pan is glued on (RTV) so unscrew the pan bolts and pry the pan off using the pry tabs on the pan. It will drop right off. Clean the engine case with green scotch and a solvent, (pan is already clean) apply sealant (yamabond) don’t use the ducat crap, install and retighten bolts and re assemble the rest of the jigsaw puzzle. Might be a good idea to inspect the oil intake and associated intake screen while the pan is off the bike.

Now I know all that is probably useless as you will probably have it done but I thought it a decent idea none the less. Cost to do the work from a dealer or repair shop, a bunch and they will most likely screw it up if it’s not a Duc shop and even then, it’s sketchy.

May just be easier to RTV the bolt in place and deal with it LOL. The pan is magnesium and very soft. Quite easy to strip threads if the situation is right. Retapping to a larger size may not be an option as I believe the original threads are already very close to the pan floor. You might not have room.
 
A minimum of two GOOD torque wrenches are a must.

never loosen bolts with them and re-calibrate them every so often. the redneck calibration method involves a bench vice and bucket(s) of water.

Not very relevant in this situation considering the mechanical acumen of the individual but in general, ok
 
Thanks a lot for the input gentlemen. So you guys all prefer changing out the oil pan instead of helicoil or timesert repair of the threads?

Can I use permatex liquid gasket on existing oil drain plug threads and see if it holds? And if it does, can I ride the bike to the shop?
 
Both a helicoil and timesert would require you to drill the opening. I wouldn't want to do that with the oil pan on the bike. If you are getting a free oil pan, I'd jump on that, coil the old one and keep it as a spare.

Don't ride the bike with a ...... up drain plug. Your engine and bike tire won't like it if it goes south.
 
Your not going to coil the pan. There isn’t enough material between the hole and the pan floor to drill/machine the required step up diameter for an insert.

What do you mean by RTV the bolt in place? Let me know about the shipping and how can i pay you. I guess safest bet would be to simply swap the oil pan. I just hope its not an expensive labor. It will be our local dealer in Calgary not actual ducati dealer since there is none here.

The oil pan you have i believe is exactly the same as goes on my bike?
