Seeking opinions about oil smoke issue

I have a 2013 R with 900kms on it. I too noticed a lot of thick white smoke on initial start/warm up. I replaced the oil and filter myself before setting it away for the winter. Even after the drain and re-fill with motul it smoked.

I've been respecting the break in for the most part, might have touched 7k rpm once during the 900 kms I managed before the weather turned cold.

Normal I guess....

You've done everything pretty much by the book so far.
A bit of an over rev won't stop the world from turning.

After you've got your break-in period(2500 kms) out of the way.
Then you can concentrate on giving it the berries and monitor oil consumption to see if it's acceptable to your way of thinking.
Remember 1 liter/1000 kms are the magic numbers;)

Also consider, there are other outstanding oils out there other than Motul.

My 2012 Pani Base smoked, my 2013 Pani S doesn't...neither consume(d)oil, both primarily street ridden, bother broken-in in the same manner, and same oil in both. Only difference in the bikes is the 12 was delivered w/full Termi and 13 is running the stock set up. Don't know why but both bike have run great w/o issue...so never really "worried" about it.

So you never really worried about it.
Very good:)

The early 1199's had a slightly different piston ring set up.
The piston rings were changed just before the 2013 year models to address excessive smoking that people were complaining about. (there's a new part number for the rings)

And contrary to your belief.
Your engines do burn/consume oil.
All engines do. It's a product of simple physics, and it's inevitable.
The only engines that don't use oil are the ones that don't ever get started.

You just didn't notice it. That's all.

Thanks for the info...didn't know about the ring change. As far as the oil consumption...what I meant was there was no "excessive" oil consumption by either bike.

Anyone have VIN numbers when the ring change took place? Mine is a 2013, made in October of 2012. Smokes at start up...? Curious which rings I have?

I think you'll most likely have the old ring design.
Don't worry about it.
