SFV4S - First Service - Oil Level a Bit High

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

I did not replace the crush washer. I didn't have that oil in the bike for long as I did a track day short thereafter and changed the oil before storing it for winter. I then replaced the drain plug with a drilled Ti one which I safety wire.

My understanding of the Panigale V4 oil level is that when the bike is straight up and down and has been off for at least two hours the oil level should be halfway in the sight glass.

These instructions are completely useless. It says if the level is below the midline, add enough to get to the max, which, to me, means the top of the circle. Thanks for the replies… very helpful.

The manual mentions the marks on the sight glass. The lower mark being the minimum, and the upper mark being the max. The marks are cast into the engine; the notches on either side of the sight glass.

Circled in red are the max lines, yellow the minimum.

:O Holy cow! Those aren’t on the sight glass! I have never bothered looking around the sight glass before! I’m feeling like an idiot for sure, but glad I know better now! Thanks for pointing this out! I wish the dealer would just do things correctly so we wouldn’t have to worry about stuff like this, but here we are.

I think dealerships are just using old training and knowledge on newer platforms. It always use to be, on the twin cylinder bikes, warm the bike up for 15 min or so then shut it off and check the oil. On a V4, the sight glass would still be empty, hence the overfill.

Oh, to be fair, on my S1000RR, the min/max indicators are actually on the sight glass:

Yeah, I can't explain the bad manual other than to say Ducati has been relying on marking cast into the engine for a long time and likely presumed everyone knows that but doesn't tell new customers. Cause Italy.

The Japanese label them.

Ask someone to lean the machine towards the right and use a mityvac to suck out the excess (inserting a long plastic tube into the fill hole). With the Ducati, I'd be particular of ensuring correct level to prevent issues.

I don’t think it’s possible to remove the excess using the fill hole. I ordered crush washers and a quart of oil. I’ll remove the excess using the drain plug. Got the extra oil in case I remove too much.

not sure what you mean...ive done it several times...stick a poly tube or straw down the fill hole and suck a little bit... 1/4 inch poly tubing will do the trick, the same as the vent line on your gas tank...

That's what I've always done to adjust the level from the fill hole. Simple and has worked 😊

I finally got a chance to let some oil out last weekend. I removed the oil plug and drained a bit of oil. Then followed the manual to check the oil level. It says check when the engine is warm. My manual says check 15 minutes after shutting the engine down (image):

Started the engine and let it heat up, then shutdown. After 15 minutes, it was closer to the min line so I added fresh oil until it got to the max line. Perfect. I took it out for a ride, then followed the same procedure to check the level again 15 minutes after shutting down the engine, still perfect. But if you check it several hours later, the level is way above the max line. The manual is very specific about the procedure as can be seen in my snapshot. Above, bp_SFV4 posted a snap of his manual saying wait at least two hours after shutdown before checking the oil level. If I’m to follow the directions in my manual, then my oil level is good. Otherwise, the level is too high. Opinions?

The older digital version of the manual for the 2020 MY gives the 2 hour advice. Same with the Panigale. If I look up for a 2020 or a 2023 you get different wait times. Maybe there was a change in the oil passages in production but that's just a guess.

I suppose the only way to know for sure is to drain it all and put 3.8 L back in. Outside of that, I'd follow the advice that's in the manual for the particular model year.

Agree with you….Once I thought the level was little low and added about 100ml .After a hard ride I could see oil dripping out of the drain hose of air box.

So I removed some more oil after the bike has been sitting for a week. It was close to the top of the window before removing oil, I stopped right at the max line. Then I started the bike to let it heat up then checked the level 15 minutes after shutdown (per manual) and it looks like this:

Just a tiny bit above the min line. I’ll check again in two hours.

You should give it some time to come back to the sump .If you drained the oil after the bike was parked for a while ,the level at the site glass should be in between max and min after draining the excess.
