I havent gotten a ticket yet but I know its coming. I find every reason to just gun the bike when I am entering a freeway from a signal light, a nice curve in the road, or a strip of freeway with no shoulder. Just curious whats the law out there if you get caught going 20-30 miles over the limit. Anyone gotten a ridiculous speeding ticket and how fast were you going?

My excuse if I ever get pulled over is that I am trying to get away from the cars because they are always on the phone and texting. Hopefully its a biker cop and I am sure he would understand.

Penalties are state and country specific. They can range from confiscation of your bike in some countries/states to jail time or just a big ticket. Heck, if the right guy pulls you over it may result in nothing but a "Shoot, I could barely catch you. Is this one o them Ducatis? How many horsepower it got? Have a nice day!"

Short answer - research Texas law and find out what your local regulations and penalties are.

LoooooooL your absolutely right mostly they just wanna see the bike and make small talk

Here you pretty much pay a lawyer to get it reduced to a non-moving violation, or dismissed. I haven't pushed it much beyond 25 over, but I have yet to have points on my license, and I get 1 tickets a year average - had 3 already this year, none on the Pani. :D

Here is a guideline for these cities. Other cities should be similar. Anything over 25mph you cant take defensive driving and have to pay and take the mark on your drivers license. So at least I they will probably not confiscated the bike or lock me up if I stay within 30mph over speed limit. Look below for Houston, so if I go 50mph over speed limit its still 300.00?

Speeding Ticket Fines

The amount you'll pay for a Texas speeding ticket is set by the municipality you were ticketed in. The citation itself may have fine information on it, or you may need to contact the court to see how much you are required to pay. All municipalities use a scale to determine how much to fine you, based on how many miles per hour over the speed limit you were going, but the scale is different for each locality. To give you an idea of the differences between fines in different municipalities, here are the schedules of fines from some of our major cities.

Houston

Miles Per Hour Over Limit
Fine
1-5 miles per hour $165
6-9 miles per hour $180
10-14 miles per hour $195
15-19 miles per hour $240
20-29 miles per hour $265
30 miles per hour or more over the limit $300

San Antonio

In San Antonio, the amount of your Texas speeding fine is determined by the following formula: $166.00 for the first 10 miles per hour over, and $5.00 for each additional mile per hour over that.

Austin

Miles Per Hour Over Limit
Fine
5 or less $164, $143 if you pay early
6-10 $194, $163 if you pay early
11-15 $239, $193 if you pay early
16-20 $284, $223 if you pay early
21-25 $301, $253 if you pay early
26-30 $301, $273 if you pay early

That might be the case with the speeding fine, but I'd look into it closely or ask somebody about other related offenses that the arresting officer can pile on. In VA when you get too far above the legal limit they hit you with reckless driving and that's where it gets really nasty (license revocation, jail time, a ton of points, etc.).

The biggest ticket I ever had in my life was back in the last century, coming out on Houston on the way to San Antonio. I was probably going faster but some unmarked county sheriff pulled over me and another car (after pacing us) and wrote us up for 110 in a 55. Back in those days, the ticket was about $250 and since it was my first in TX (I had a TX license), I could go to traffic school and it was dismissed. YMMV

Last ticket I got was 3 years ago I got a 74 in a 45 on the motorcycle and in the KC metro area, you can usually pay double and get a parking ticket in exchange, no lawyer needed....once a year except school/work zones. Also there are exceptions in my city so 20+ over, no deal. A year later, I lost in court, ticket was about $200 and went on my record, insurance company saw it, but told me no change.

In my lifetime (mostly in the 80s and 90s), I've had dozens of tickets and warnings all over the country. But I had a radar detector (worked 90% of the time) and was a chronic speeder so I was always tempting fate....no more, I'm the slowest guy on the road in my car. The bike? That's a different story, you are right....this is not looking good. Like you, I can feel it coming. :(

Know your laws, have a good lawyer, always have a clean record to start with. For me personally, never say anything at the traffic stop....nothing.

Nothing on the Pani yet but, yeah I'm sure it's coming.

Worst ever? 90+ in a 45 on my 748 along with a friend on his 900ss. We hired a lawyer and beat it. I'm betting that fact still gnaws at the GA State Patrol officer who had a "No Mercy" sticker on the back of his clipboard for perps to stare at while he wrote 'em up.

Yeah, he had attitude. We hired ours. :)

I've been impounded once this season already.

In a former life when I was "on the job" I was doing paperwork on midnights with the radar running. Heard the highest pitch tone I ever heard and saw 138 on screen. An old Gixxer Slingshot passed me in a blue blur. Didnt even bother throwing lights on or car in gear. Ended up seeing the guy at the diner an hour later and asking if he'd like to try and break 140 on it later on. The guy was speechless. lol

Being impounded because you still had that butt-ugly stock tailpiece on doesn't count.
I'd say the officer did the rest of us a public service. Ugly just shouldn't be allowed on the streets. :)

In college station, Texas while in school in 1989 I got a 151 in a 30 ticket, failure to stop at red light, attempting to elude, and a couple of other things under which I received loss of license for 6 months, loss of motorcycle endorsement, 2 years probation, $2000 in fines.....but all was reduced to a class B misdemeanor. And no DWI (i was young and dumb)

And a totaled bike to boot.

Not the best year of my life.

When I used to live in MA, they had a rule that doubling the speed limit got you an automatic operating recklessly to endager, in addition to the speeding ticket, which I got for doing 60 in a 30 in a speed trap area. Be careful of rules like that, which may not be stated on the speeding fine list you look up.
