Thinking about a commuter bike...

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

I'm pretty close to settling on the BMW HP4 Carbo...wait, I mean the BMW G650GS. Good mileage, heated grips, looks comfortable (haven't demoed one yet) and gives me the option for some light off-roading if I feel so inclined.

So you will then own beauty and the beast (ugly):D

Not as ugly as an S1krr!

Hmmm...I think it is...but in a different way.... BMW is definitely function over form design company... But both bikes are great and when you ride them you cant see what everyone else sees...lol

I think Ducati is the only manufaturer that has both form and function in all their bikes!

I've used a 2011 Triumph Street Triple R for commuting (and occasional trips and track days) for the past three years. It is certainly small, light and maneuverable and mine has been 100% reliable.

I test rode the new Hyper a couple of weeks ago and I think it would make an ideal commuter if you want a Supermoto/dual sport style look and seating position.

Fun thread! I have been commuting on my Pani (37 miles round trip) for the past 2 weeks, but I just don't see it holding up in the long run over several years. High mileage Ducs aren't fun to unload either. I am quasi trying to unload one now and everybody turns their nose up at it since there are a ton for sale that have a fraction of the miles on them that mine does.

I love the new hyper and went and looked at one, but it costs twice what the BMW does and fails the reliability department/maintenance test (IMHO).

Capt, love the idea of the BMW 650, like the Triumph mentions along with the the Hyper. Not mentioned but worthy of consideration is the Aprilia Dorsoduro 1200 w/ABS, I'm nor sure the fuel range would be to your liking though.

Have fun with the hunt,

ktm? husky? the hyper sp is so sick, the strada is fugly. but the ktm 990 sm r is hot too -- or the sm t. the 690s are better than the bimmer.

i had an s1000rr, i am driving a k1300s right now, and i drove an r1200gs on my last europe trip -- they're great bikes but so boring! go austrian if not italian.

Agree. It's tough finding riders who don't like their KTM Dukes or SMTs.

Triumph triple is a great motor. Nice medium between torquey/revvy. Have a Sprint 955 triple for 13 years (bought new) and I'll keep it as long as I can get parts for it.
And should it ever need replacing (no more parts to keep it running), I'll go back to Triumph for a replacement.

Pardon my ignorance if its explained in here already but how long is your commute? Why not the 1199? I mean sure, its not THAT comfortable to commute with but thats the price we pay for owning supermodels.
