Thinking about the tricolore

Going for a 1199 Tri demo next week. And a 899 right after.

There is no comparison to the 899... I was very disappointed by how the 899 felt compared to the rawness of the 1199.

After test riding the tri, hop onto a base and see if you can feel a difference.

Save yourself $8 grand and grab yourself a base bike and then set it up the way you want it with wheels and paint. You'll have a better looking bike and save thousands

But isn't there a huge difference between a base and tri? Wheels, lights, suspension and slip on? That's way more than $8k?

No, the full exhaust goes for around $2.5k and you can get CF wheels for about $3k. The electronic suspension is just a gimmick. The LED lights are awesome but not worth an upgrade from the base. (HIDs will do)

It's not just elec suspension, aren't they ohlins?

If you can pick up a slightly used one, do it... Brand new they are over priced... I picked up mine with 29 miles (used) and paid 25k for mine... Although I have seen slightly used R's on here for even less...

Unfortunately I am limited to only Canadian versions due to Ducati import rules, but I am looking. There are base versions $14-16. And seen a S for 18. All used.

New S in the $20 range up to $25 for a tri. Cheapest R I have seen here is $28. These are all Canadian dollars. So add around 10% to the usd.

I don't know about you, but I'm the type that will wonder what the next level of awesomeness is, so I constantly wonder what having an R is like and I hear good things... I say go big or go home...

They are, does the name mean that much to you? Unless your a professional rider you wont feel any difference... and at that level there are better setups than the factory ohlins suspension.

You are much better off getting a base, throwing some lightweight wheels on there (less than $2K) and recouping some cost by selling the stock enkeis. The termi slip can be had for around $1600.

You also have to weigh where you are buying the bike as well... HST on $20K is a nice chunk of change.

You, my good sir, are a salesmans wet dream... you are already going big by purchasing a $20K italian motorcycle, why spend another $10K+ more on the same bike that is maybe 2% faster (in the right hands that is)

Good points. I assume the S wheels are a straight swap for the base wheels?

I already went BIG! But now that the HP4 is gone, time to try the rest! :D

Be careful if you buy the base model. I have seen a few complaints on this and other forums about problems with the front and rear suspension whereas the Ohlins are relatively problem free and functions much better.
If you plan to track your bike the Tri comes with the Ducati DDA+ included.
The Tri has the best paint scheme by far and is a limited edition (only manufactured in 2012 and 2013).

Ps. I am sure the wheel switch over is plug and play.

Why don't you just get another HP4 since you liked it so much ?

Let me put it this way, say you have a super hot girlfriend. And you bang her hard 23,000 times. Then you break up. But then she wants to make up and get together again. But now you are thinking should I keep banging her again. I already know how she bangs. She should fit like a glove. Or should I bang this new chick that I know nothing about and see what's it like? If the new chick is no good and complains and is high maintenance, I can always go back to the old one! But this way at least I will know if the new chick was worth a bang or not.

^^ Wait what...

Lol. I already know the hp4 and know it is an amazing bike. I have ridden a Duc but never owned one. So looking to experience the pleasures or pains of owning one. I can always go back to an HP4 later.
