I am sure you all got this one today too. Can you see them stocking the dealers with these sprockets now? This is classic "upsell" technology in works!

Get the most out from your 1199 Panigale‏

Dear Gunny,

In addition to winning a special place in your heart, your 1199 Panigale won in 2012 an unprecedented collection of awards for its groundbreaking style, innovative technology and breathtaking performance. For 2013, we eagerly await the Panigale's debut in the World Superbike Championship as well as its encore performance in the FIM Superstock, where the differences between your motorcycle and the racing version are truly minimal.

Despite the 1199 Panigale's incredible accomplishments to date, it's in our DNA to never stop improving the Panigale through constant development and updating.

Our work, also reflected in the soon-to-be-launched 1199 Panigale R, has resulted in a set of improvements that will enable you to get the absolute most from the best sport twin ever made.

"¢ We have developed a new electronic engine map which also optimizes Quick Shift gear changes, and will be provided to you at zero cost.
"¢ We have also homologated the option to use a 41-tooth rear sprocket, to shorten the final drive ratio. A kit will be offered for purchase at a special discounted rate.

These modifications will give your engine more robust mid-range response and - at the race track - will allow you to get the most from the Ducati Performance exhaust, whether you have already installed it or should you choose to do so in the future.

Further, as you have already heard, we have improved comfort along with performance. For an optimum ride, you may choose to have new heat shields installed, at no cost, on the engine's vertical cylinder and on the exhaust system.

The above improvements will be made available to you by the end of March. Please contact your local dealer for more information, and to schedule an appointment.

We are thankful for your commitment to a product at the absolute top of its category, as well as your appreciation of our commitment to its nonstop advancement. We hope to see you soon at one of the Ducati family gatherings.

Yeah, I got it today too. I never got anything via snail mail though so this was the first official communication I have received from Ducati addressing any of the issues.

I received that a few days ago in electronic form... Made me a little unhappy over the fact that I had bought (not yet installed) a 14T front sprocket because I was told I couldn't do 41T rear.

Choices, choices.

I just got the same email this morning.
I bought my Tri used and contacted Ducati right after I purchased it to have me listed as the owner. I got the card in the mail after 4 weeks. It is nice know that Ducati has the information correct and I am getting the notices.

i know gunny i have studied your set up and like it a lot (love how it looks BLING). i highly doubt ducati is offering a quick change rear sprocket. i assume the front sprocket is staying 15.

They must hate me. I never get them emails. Hahaha.

So, Gunny, you said the 40T scraped up the swing-arm a bit I'm assuming the 41T will be a little worse. You have pics of that?

No

Sorry, didnt think to take any pics at the time while mounting it all up. Was too pissed that it didnt fit to think of it. Yes, the rear axle was all the way fwd when we tried to get the chain on, and there was NOT enough slack to do so. The 41 tooth is going to be even worse since larger than mine, hence the reason I am trying to explain that people will need a longer chain - this enables the rear axle to go backward to the rear more, thus giving you enough slack to go around new sprocket and still leave room to properly adjust the chain.

Wish I had photoshop skills to depict exactly what I am telling people here. I will see if someone here at work can create something where I can point arrows to the spot where it touched the swingarm. Thanks for your inquiry Woot.

'We fixed the midrange....by offering to let you regear your bike down.' lol

Had a good laugh at this email this morning.

Ahhh, okay I got you!

Gunny, For folks who will take Ducati up on the Sprocket upgrade what chain would you recommend for the 1199 ?

I have DID 525 Gold and Black on my 1098 S.

Im def doing it but I was already purchasing the AFAM quick change lightweight setup

I have the AFAM too, just switch to order the 15T/41T, and install the DNA upmap when it comes. I might be doing that.

I've tried the following setup for the race-only bike:
- 14/40 - too large of a delta from stock IMO. Gears 1-3 revved up way too fast and too much top end lost even on tight tracks
- 14/39 - good setup for tighter tracks with shorter front and back straights such as Sonoma
- 14/38 - I felt the perfect setup for all-around track riding. Better drive out of corners, especially improved mid-range in 2nd and 3rd gears and worked very well for acceleration on straights when used together with reverse quick-shifting.
- 15/40 - not enough of a difference for track use IMO but would be the way I'd go for all-around, spirited street riding. Will likely make the change on my Tri with this gearing.

With regards to a 15/41 set-up, while I haven't ridden that exact setup, obviously I've danced around close enough to that gear ratio to feel that 2 teeth up in the back would give you a short-term "solution" to the low-end and mid-range issues but I believe would also introduce handling issues and riskier corner drives on public roads where road conditions aren't near what they are on a track.

*Note - The bike is a base, non-abs with Termi slips, S wheels, CRC race plastics, and a few select carbon pieces for lighter weight and protection.
- I use the AFAM quick change kit with 520 chains and alum sprockets. Personally, I think the weight savings are minimal and for a street/track bike I would use steel sprockets and consider a 525 chain.
- You need to make sure to log, track, and adjust ride height and wheelbase changes as it will have a fairly significant effect on handling characteristics. I have a very knowledgeable team mechanic that understands these things much better than I and would be apprehensive to make these changes otherwise.
- Also note that the testing was all done prior to the new upmap and bazzaz tuning and have yet to be able to test it out on the track with the new upmap installed.

No email or letter yet, but I have 300 miles, would you change the front sprocket too?
