Trading 1199S for 1198S?

Have you ridden a 1098R?

There is no comparison, the 1098R beats the 1199 every time except at redline. Unless, you only ride on the track and power slide through everything, the 1199 just doesn't have the torque to keep up. Also, the 1098R is the most comfortable motorcycle at speed I have ever ridden. All the Panigales are tortuously hot, that is why the Superleggera 1299 no longer has the same exhaust configuration. I do think the Panigale might be more comfortable for a large rider given the wider handle bars.

Again, $ for $ the 1098R is the best Ducati has ever made!!! But boy do I want a Superleggera 1299 :)

Actually, the 1098R and the 1199 have equal torque figures. It just feels like the 1098R has more torque because it doesn't rev as high, so it makes peak torque lower in the RPM range. But their peak torque was the same.

But the 1199 motor revs/spins up much faster and has more top end.

BTW - heat had absolutely nothing to do with the 1299SL having that exhaust configuration. It was done to move the power around, same reason it was done in WSBK. It had nothing to do with the amount of heat the bike generates sitting at stop lights.

Torque is essentially a result of displacement; HP a result of revs.

My 1199 is hands down more comfortable and easier to throw around than my 848 ever was. People spent thousands trying to get the 1x98 series to handle. The 1199 does out of the box.

Get what YOU want and F everything else. At the end of the day, it's all that really matters!!

Exactly, if your slow it doesn't matter, if your fast you don't ride old equipment.

Bah.. Dont be so sure about everything.
We have a dutch guy here in Sweden riding a 1098 with a -94 916 frame.
He's faster the you can spell it.

And he would be faster on a newer bike.

There is a reason why NO one runs competitive old tech on the high end of the scale here.

Disalvo had course records on a 848, but he is not riding one anymore.

I went from a pretty extensively modified 1198sp to my 1199 on track. Bottom line (for me) is that the 1199 is easier and more comfortable to ride fast. They solved the geometry issues out of the box, improved suspension, electronics etc. I'm happy I made the switch. Loving the 1199.

That being said - I do miss the rawness and character of the 1198. I think Ducati made the 99 "safer" to ride for a larger share of the market and that really changed the experience for me. Beyond a "which is better/faster" viewpoint, there is an element of badassery that is lost on the 99 and is still very much appreciated on the precious xx98 bikes.

I never debated about the speed of the two. I know that the 1199 is the faster bike but that doesnt matter to me. Im not an expert by far. I do maybe 4 track days a year max and never push it to the limits as I do not want to crash. But thats okay.

I get my enjoyment out of just dragging my knee around the track and the pure acceleration out of the corners and on the straights. I would honestly probably be faster on an old R6 than the panigale since i wouldnt be scared of a crash. But i bought the panigale because of the looks, the sound, and the acceleration.

All I am saying is that the 1198 has more character and thats what I love in a bike.

This is the reason why I didn't get rid of my 996 when I picked up a panigale.

Now that my 996 engine has been highly modified, it's even more raw and crazy to ride.

I have a 1098 and 1199S. For the street, the 1098 is much more bareable but on the track, the Pani is where the bike shines.

i have both and while the 1098R is a blast of a bike and has great torque it now feels old and big, it is brutal to ride in traffic pretty much unbearable and will constantly stall pulling off the lights

The 1199R is a faster bike and just better in every department.

i personally like the rawness of the 1098R and i think its a really special bike but the 1199 is just so easy and competent and for a commuter it's a no brainer.
