Having done my first Track Day on the Panigale recently at Silverstone my rear tyre is shagged !!. I have done track days on my previous bikes..RSV4 & S1000rr with no issues. Just wondering if its suspension set up ?? or something else ??
This was on the National circuit, for those that don't know this is half the circuit which is predominantly right handed as you can see.

Too me I would say that is poor suspension set up. You should be looking at something akin to orange peel in terms of texture.

what pressures are you running?

Cold tire pressure starting point given to me was 27 rear 29 front, it looks the tread looks like your pressure's too high as I had the exact same pattern with too much pressure, that said, the following track day my suspension was properly set up and the tearing went away.

Could try not leaning quite so much - the centre tread looks fine ;) ;)

I did consider if it was cold tearing. I think you may be more correct than my thoughts. Perhaps a combination of both?

Cold shredding or too much air....or maybe a mixture of both.

Chuck those SP's for an SC1 up front and an SC2 on the rear, 28 PSI front and 25 (hot) rear and you'll be fine.

There's no tearing there. Tearing extends down into the carcass of the tire. What is shown in the picture is purely on the surface of the tire. It's a normal eglomeration of shed rubber on the tire's surface. If you get a tire to operating temp and it doesn't shed rubber it goes greasy and you fall down. The pilling on the edge is very normal.

Looks to me like you got the tire hot at a track day.

My suspension guy told me Pirelli's are soft and need to run higher pressures. 36 front 38 rear hot... start 32/32 cold

Soft doesn't mean running at higher pressures. Many Dunlop soft compound slicks run less than 20 psi cold.

I agree. The higher the pressure the less of a footprint the tire has on the road. If you lower the pressure the footprint will increase in size, in a way so does the grip but so does the heat. The tire will wear faster.

A softer tire has has more grip then a harder tire but it will wear faster. I think what he tries to tell you is that a soft compound compensates for the grip you lose when puting more pressure into the tire.

Marcbc is right on. Good working suspension set-up wouldn"t do that to a tyre. You take a look at Lorenzos rear tyre or who ever else is in the Moto GP parc ferme and apart from marbles that have stuck to the tyre when slowing down, you can usually see a smoothly worn surface, indicating that the suspension is working properly and its not the tyres doing that job.

I'd say check pressures. To me it looks like a hot tear vs cold tear. I had the same issue on my R6. My tire pressure was 2-3 PSI low coming off the tire warmers. Tires gained too much pressure due to excessive contact patch.

I added 2 PSI and the wear pattern improved but tires were shagged already. You have got to watch the pressures during the day. Make sure you are not getting excessive pressure gain when you come in off your session.

I run Pirellis on all my race bikes and street bikes. I get much longer life out of the slicks vs the DOT race tires. Especially the SC2 front tires.

Looks like you may have two issues. rebound setting, and tire temp. Since the major tearing is in a strip away from the center and edge of the tire on both sides, that indicates a rebound issue. Looks like the tire is rebounding to fast and is skipping off the track when leaned over. You may not even feel this since it is just unloading the tire and not actually leaving the track surface. The loading and unloading is causing the tearing. Add some rebound to fix that, then run a few laps which should clean up the tire some. Then you can work on the pressure. You may not have a temp/pressure issue, but you won't know that until you clean the tearing up. I set the SP's at 27 rear,29 front cold, then put the warmers on and never mess with the pressure for the rest of the day. I got 3 race days out of the stock SP's before pitching them, but riding styles vary so one mans settings may not work for you.
