V4 Superleggera: So Who Is Ordering One?

Awesome!!! I didn't get to choose my number which sucks, but I think it was something to do about North America and the disconnect between Italy. I did get the GP ride though, and I'm expecting the delivery in the next few weeks :)))

Honestly, when I made this thread, there were a ton of unknowns and I was trying to figure out who else started the process and do some more preliminary fact gathering.

I made my decision in early March and then the pandemic hit. Ducati put the whole thing on hold and honestly, I had my hands full with a ton of other things anyway. In the time since, they changed part of the program around (for the better, I think) and I reconfirmed my commitment and there's not one day I second guess the decision.

I think it's going to be a phenomenal bike.

So who's gonna be the first one to get bored of these beauties and allow me to buy it at a slightly more reasonable price? [emoji16]

I'm sure there will be a fair amount of people who will sell when the next thing comes out but it probably won't be me; I'm not a very good seller of things (which is partly why I have so many motorbikes). I tend to grow old with the things I made my most fun memories with.

On another note, I think that you had the best bike Ducati made in the last 10 years. If you didn't like that one enough to keep it, why do you think you will like this one? That's not a rhetorical question or said in jest. I am genuinely curious to hear the answer. I know that there are things about this bike that are particularly appealing.

It wasnt that I didnt like the 1199sl. I certainly liked the bike. My issues were more build/quality for the money. I've had over 20 sportbikes over the years so I've been fortunate enough to have a lot of ride time on everything from mv agusta to kawasaki.

The 1199 sl felt like a bike meant to first and foremost look beautiful. Secondly, show off what ducati can do. Where it lacks imo....is durability and ease of maintaining/ownership. If you are not putting many miles on it....no biggie. But for myself....someone who not only rides the bike but does the majority of my own maintenance.....it was a bit disheartening to drop that much coin and be dealing with fairing that dont line up properly, leaking oil, burn marks through the carbon fiber and melting of the glue that holds the seat down. This all with less than 2k miles on it.

Not trying to start anything...but when I compare it to the build quality on my ninja H2 or the aprilia rsv4 factory 1100 there is no comparison. Sure....the parts are more exotic....but the build quality was not even with the price tag. It's a lit of little things like the design of the fairing, the durability of materials, the welds, the quality of the carbon fiber, the ease of changing oil....etc etc etc that I think need more attention.

Having said that if I had unlimited money I'd still have the bike.....I did like it. The new v4 sl is probably the best looking sportbike I've ever seen.....I just hope for whomever is spending that much cash on it that they ducati addresses some of those things and remembers they should be more than just a garage showpiece.

Yes....I know.....maybe I just had a lemon. I love Ducati so no hate here.

All fair points. I only own one 1199SL so my sample size isn’t enough to counter any of your experiences but I have had it for 4 years now and have put well over 2k miles on it now, including a couple of track days, and I don’t have any of those issues. And I found the fit and finish to be superb and the bike has been beyond my wildest imagination in terms of ownership experience. The quality of the parts are top notch and I don't have any weird issues like fading, discoloration, delamination, or anything else that subpar quality parts seem to suffer.

But, like you said that maybe you just had a lemon, maybe I just had a golden bike, built on the right day but the right guy. Who knows?

I did have a problem with MAP sensors and a lambda sensor so I am not saying there has never been a problem. But those were easy fixes. And my experience with this bike has been so good that I decided to take the plunge on the new bike.

Also, I think that on bikes like this, there is value in buying them new. There’s a warranty, and you know that your OCD has protected the bike for its entire life. You don't have to worry about what problems you're inherited because of how the previous owner may or may not have treated it.
