So the exhaust must be way different than the V4 1103 as it was $5,400 but was a 10 hour install?
....all the price of entry in the ducati club - it is what it is - it won't be any cheaper next year, and its a pretty good bang for the buck when you stack it up against the car world - and given our (motorcycle) performance eclipses just about anything.....it (the v4 exhaust install at dealer level) is cheap by comparison
don't shoot me...i'm just the messenger
The "R" has different primary tubes than the other models. Is it possible the only real difference between it and the full Akra is the second half of the exhaust?
The V4R will take the same Akra exhaust as the other V4 models, only difference is the mapping that gets downloaded to the ECU. When we first got them we were told to plan for around 6 hours and after installing a couple it was clear that it's a 2-day job for one tech to complete so we charge 10 hours for the install. I wish it wasn't that, but that's reality. Everything is so tightly packaged and lots of "stuff" to disassemble to get to everything and then put it all back together.
Man... this whole exhaust thing is nuts! I remember when I decided to do the full exhaust install on my 1199S... was it a pain, yes... did it take a while, yes... did I learn a .... ton about my bike, yes. In my opinion, if you have the tools and the time DIY.
The guy in the article was talking about not being able to extract same HP with aftermarket exhaust and dynotune for the price of the pipe or less... now that's a load of bull.

I've spent many hours of my life DIY-ing upgrades to my race bikes over the years, before I was in the Ducati business and after, so I'm not afraid to tackle most projects. However, after watching a few installs of this exhaust on V4's I would absolutely not want to try to do that myself. When you see a 15+ year experience Ducati Master Tech doing it and the whole time he's going "Man, this is a pain in the ass!" and it takes him 2 days, that's a pretty good indication that I don't want to do it myself!
BUT if you get a chance to ride a V4 with this exhaust and mapping, somehow it magically becomes worth it inside your helmet as you're screaming out of the last corner onto the straight. It's amazing what our enthusiast brains can justfiy!
Maybe one day I will be lucky enough to build one of these beasts for racing and experience this joy you speak of...
