I think "better deal" just depends on you ruse. The "R" wasn't meant to appeal to everyone. Ironically, I'm sure 99 percent of them will never see the track. But it's a better racing platform if that is your goal.

Street bike or normal person doing trackdays goes to the Speciale. Not really hard to figure out and nothing wrong IMHO with Ducati making both. They each serve a purpose. I'm sure in a couple years we will see the SL editions, which will likely be a blending of the R and Speciale based on the 1103 and being a pure terror for either application. They may be able to claim 250hp at the crank with a race exhaust on that one. Which would set the internet on fire. But no need for it now.

This is not new. The days of the carbon fiber/limited edition "R" ended with the Panigale 1199R. Ducati is saving the cf and limited production treatment for the super high priced Superleggera models. Maybe it's an Audi business model thing.

Dude the panigale R was never limited edition to numbers and they never made them with carbon fairings .... and when you say those carbon days are over the v4r still comes with carbon mudguard front fender exhaust cover etc.

Yeah but that 16,500 redline scream. That just might be enough for me to justify the purchase. :)

With that higher redline and lower cc, you also miss lower end torque.

Speciale is still the better deal if you want to road ride, unless you like revving all over the place. Might as well get a jap bike then :)

I'm not sure about that. The power curve Ducati showed comparing the V4R to the V4/V4S had higher HP and torque along the entire curve if I recall correctly. They didn't just bump the redline to compensate for lower displacement. It also has much lighter motor components, larger throttle bodies, larger valves, and larger intakes, among other things. They went all out and maximized power from all aspects of the motor, it's an outright better performing motor in all ways.

You could be right. But there are always compromises and its a smaller motor. Maybe that compromise was replacing cubic displacement in the motor with cubic displacement in $

So i'm curious what this variation was...

Dry clutch.. magnesium wheels.. different rear subframe... Exhaust... All carbon bodywork.. upgraded brakes etc..

I think we are looking at a Superleggera Prototype here again and not necessarily the V4R..

Peak toque 83 R vs 91 on the S so unless you are tracking or racing it seems like the S would give the feeling of more low end power.

You have it reversed.

The R makes less power than the base/S everywhere except way up beyond overrev territory for the base/S. That said, the R has shorter final drive gearing than the base/S so the difference probably won't matter in the real world unless you care about fuel economy.

That's them testing the WSBK bike or parts of it.

That's what I'm saying. The days of the limited edition, carbon fiber bodywork bikes like the 998R and 999R are gone. The current "R" models don't have cf bodywork (I'm talking about side fairings, not small stuff like the front mudguard) and are not numbered.
