Why pay so much for checks during warranty

haha, I just read your post about contacting DNA. Good luck. After 30 ....... phone calls I finally spoke with some .... who said "What do you want me to do about it?" IDK, give me a ....... bike in the meantime while your dealer stays finger-popping his ......., playing games with me and ignoring me. DNA Appears to be completely useless. Couple of 20-something year old guys hanging out in an office all day.

Ducati wants to do one thing- make money. Thats it.

Just got off the phone with BMW. They pay for the break in service. The next service is at 6000. Sounds like the duc is going up for sale sans the upgrades. Sick of this stuff!!!!!!!!!

No they don't, that is BS! I own two new BMW's and the first service is just as much as Ducati's. It is all up to the dealership.

+1 - I have a BMW as well and the service isn't much different. First service at 1000km/621 miles (basic oil change, etc. at $90-100 an hour) and next service with valve check, etc. at 12k miles.

Yes, both of you may be correct, so let me restate. The local Austin BMW dealer offered free first service. So, yes it is highly dependent upon your dealer.

However, the point is why do we pay for bolts to be turned on a bike under warranty? They should want the bike dead reliable during the warranty period not looking for a way to drag more money out of their customers!

I won't argue that I don't like the first service on any of these bikes. It seems really petty especially given the fact that you can hit the service in a week or two of picking the bike up. IMHO, it should be thrown in.

I don't pay for anything that goes wrong with the bike while its under warranty. ;)
My dealer gave me loaner bikes while they fixed a warranty issue on my S4RS

I've had to "turn bolts" on everyone of my bikes. The warranty is very specific and doesn't cover things are routine. I don't expect it to be. I'm not a Ducati fanboy, but ....... we're not entitled just because we bought a Ducati. If other manufacturers do this it's because they're desperate for sales.

It is funny when one year old thread suddenly continues as if nothing happened during the last 12 months.

I think you are confusing Ducati the company with a Ducati Dealer. Dealers make their money service. Without the service bills no one would be open to sell Ducatis.

My first service was thrown in by Ducati Austin btw. They earned it back times ten already.

While we are on the topic (or not), another thing I prefer on the BMW is the use of torx over hex. IMHO, torx is a vastly superior bolt and much less prone to stripping than the hex used on the Ducati.

Ideally, I'd agree with you.

But.....

You sometimes have fasteners in hard-to-reach places with a clear angle of approach. The advantage of hex is that you can use ball end hex wrenches if/when it's impossible to get straight entry to the fastener. (At least, I *think* it's an advantage - I've never seen/heard of a "ball-end" torx wrench/bit).

Thanks for detailing one of the largest reasons Desert Desmo exists. You're the best!

One correction, though...parts for your oil change run about $100. I won't change it for $20 even if I like you. Maybe $150. ;)

$100??? How so??

I left out part of this so wanted to go back and fix it for clarity. The above is correct, but there is also a 6k mile service in the middle so it's actually sooner than the Pani both for the non-valve service and the valve check.

Having worked for a Ducati Dealership in northern Florida, I've definitely seen some outrageous service bills and a plethora of issues that should've been covered under warranty but werent. I had worked at a Honda Powerhouse Dealership prior to my employment and the Duc Dealer, and the Honda dealership was a family owned and operated business that destroyed the numbers we were putting up at Florida Motorsports. They always had amazing customer service and went well out of their way to make customers happy. The Ducati dealership, on the other hand, was quite the opposite. They never ate costs for customers when they should have, rarely gave discounts to regular customers, and charged outrageous prices for service. The owner of the dealership damn near had a stroke when I told him that I gave a regular customer of mine, that just spent $3500, 10% off. I explained that I regularly gave 15% off at my old job, and always kept my customers coming back. I always tried taking care of the customers, as that was how I was trained, and my boss fought me 100% of the way. I was even stopped from placing an order for a customer that had already spent $1500, on a $500 helmet order because the owner's wife said we werent going to make enough money on margin! I saw some shady shizz at the Ducati dealer, which was one reason I stopped working there. I know that a lot of dealers are hit or miss, but I have had many more great experiences at the Japanese dealers than the Europeans. Just my .02.

Its up to the Dealer. D Austin sold me a set of DP rearsets for 1k brand new. List is 1200. They are great with service times and bend over backwards to help me out. They aren't perfect but good as I can ask.

I, for one, have had nothing but stellar service and work from Ducati of Austin. Couldn't be happier.

My only gripe is they didn't tell me I needed special tools to adjust my chain tension. Then when I ordered some and asked them to do it they barely adjusted it and left it too tight for track duty. I took it back and they still left it too tight lol! I wonder if whoever is sitting on my bike is like 100lbs bc once I sit on it 200lbs in gear the chain was too tight. A non issue now since I have the tools to do it at home.

But they blow everyone else out of the water with everything else. Installed my GPS DDA, rearsets, sprocket, track suspension setup, and a few other bits perfectly and reasonably priced too.

The tool is only maybe $15 so no biggie...but they certainly should get the tension of the chain right....

Well, their two techs do look pretty light :) I suppose I need to get said tool, I just looked at the 2 big pinch bolts for it, not the adjustment.
