Just had my “start of season” oil change and chain service done. Was told, up front, that since my bike is “newer,” 2023 SFV2,
there could be factory software updates needing to be installed and they would $30 each. Turns out there were 2, so $60.
I authorized the work, but couldnt help but wonder if i was being ripped. In years of owning higher end cars, ive never been charged for any factory software update. My ‘21 Mercedes AMG just had a software update (not due to a recall), no charges.
Is this typical with Ducati, and/or other brands? $60 isnt going to make or break me— but nor do I like being ripped off. Thoughts appreciated.

I'm surprised to read they charged for the updates for a factory software revision on a bike that's under warranty.

Did they tell you what it was for?

I asked what exactly the updates were for, and they said they “could find out.”. It was odd that they update info did not appear on my final invoice, just a charge of $60 for “misc/shop.”. Whenever one of my cars has an update, even though there is no charge, I still get info on the invoice indicating exactly what the
update was, at least the “code number” or something and an indication that it was an update. At the time I was leaving I was thinking I would not
pursue the issue, so did not have them “find out” the exact info. But now I’m going to pursue specifics.

I would. I’d also call the next closest dealer to you and see if they charge for updates. Just to be clear, you paid them for an annual or first service and they added on update fees?

Yeah, this was an oil change and chain service just to begin the riding season. Bike has 2500 miles, 1st service was done last summer. Yes, they charged me $60 for two “sw updates.”.

NO!?
Good grief, I realize it’s Ducati, but seems a bit nickle-and-dime for dealers to charge for such things. This is my 2nd Ducati, the first one (‘20 SS) had a few updates, and a 600 mile service light, but they never charged for those. If I didnt like the bike so much, Id consider switching brands. But who knows, maybe others are doing the same thing.

I get that it takes up a few mins of the tech’s time and the Ducati software updater is probably not exactly easy to use like everything Ducati. Probably won’t have the bike long enough to reset the next annual or oil light so…

The problem with the knock off devices is that they're typically a few years behind the current model year. It wouldn't auto detect my VIN or allow me to rest the PIN code on my 2021 until an update in 2023.

I have the OBDStar version of that which is largely the same...knock off Texa running on an Android device. To be clear, when they say updates, they mean the device, not the bike. You may still be able to reset codes etc by manually selecting a comparable bike, ie the US EU5 2022 bike.

This screen looks very similar to what I see on my device.

yeah, that does look like a knock off of OBDStar. I do like my OBDStar so far. It often gets updates and works pretty well.

I can tell you my dealer charges not only for the "shop time" for the updates, but they also charge an "equipment fee"...when I asked what that was for, they said it was rental fee for the computer they use to connect to the bike!! Granted I did my own oil change and maintenance and was there just for them to update my software and to reset teh service light (it was 86 dollars for them to do this...60 dollars shop time and 26 dollar equipment fee). To say I was pissed is to say the least....I was going to ask if I get charged for them using a torque wrench as well or if I was gonna have to pay the snap on guy as well in the future??? Just REDICULOUS !!! I will absolutely either be changing my date or getting a tool to clear service intervals myself going forward. This was on a SFV4SP that was bought from the shop.
