You guys are all funny talking in reference to pricing and stuff... Find a SINGLE manufacturer doing something like this. The materials involved alone are worth the asking price. Try and make a Magnesium composite frame body and get back to me as to the cost of making that and what you'd have to charge to make any money on the deal...

Also, the specs of this bike are amazing. Look closely at the pistons, the crank, the things outside may leave you feeling bummed, but it is the heart that makes me excited. The carbon fiber sub frame alone is probably worth almost $10k. It shouldn't be hidden it is that beautiful.

I've pushed the bike with everything but fuel in it and it felt like a mountain bike. Amazing. And when you look at details like EVERY fairing bolt, every engine bolt, every EVERY bolt made of titanium. The rounded and sculptured fairing edges, the details like the spacers, etc. All attention to details.

This is a "Hey world, this is what CAN be done and produced for the general public". And oh yeah... 8 lbs lighter than the WSBK...

Quit looking at the outside and pay attention to the details and $65k will make you feel that they could have asked for so much more. Try and price out an 1199RS13 and get back to me.

Wow, there are thinking adults here!

Seriously folks, its awesome, its expensive and it is a track special with street capabilities, albiet limited street capabilities. Congrats to those who can plunk down the coin and get one and can I get a ride?

Dammit, I missed them"¦where are the "thinking folks" at? :D

It is an amazing bike. The fact that it comes from the factory makes it more so. The price does seem a little steep though considering everything. I guess the price range is about right though, speaking from an evolutionary standpoint. The Desmo was what..$50kish?

MV's CC was over a $100k new if I am not mistaken and that bike didn't seem to have the overall packaging of either the Desmo or the SL (my opinion).

-- early-bird special was $65k on the desmosedici...it then went to $72k, and many sold for less (the unspoken for ones in the 2008/09/10 financial market meltdown)

-- 'nuff said about the SL - maybe not a bargain by some peoples standards, but i sure can't build one like it for any less....nor would i want to :) - the factory does a decent job on their own for me "thank you"!

Its good that they stuck to a single paint scheme for the SL and it sure does look great..

With the D16RR I believe they had the solid red and the red/white schemes and the latter did look a lot better.. wonder whether these were region specific or was the customer asked to make a choice on deposit..

Also I happened to read somewhere that Ducati seemed to have learnt their lesson with the SL from the mistakes they did with handling the Desmosedici.. not sure what they meant by that statement..

Hope this is something they are extremely proud of and so will be the 500 lucky owners..

-- with the desmosedici, you were able to choose your color at the time you ordered

-- only lesson i can think they may have learned was looking at 97 million dollars being added to revenue :) - i doubt they had enough warranty claims to worry about considering total sales....granted, they may not have sold all of them right away, but if they learned anything, it was that there were 1500 people willing to buy them.....

-- fast forward to 1199 SL....it is a great continuing story of a manufacturer giving its customers/enthusiasts what they want.......

Do you still have your D16RR or have you sold it? Hope you got a lot of miles out of that thing.. I have seen used ones going for $48k to $52k with barely 1500 miles on them.. not sure why they bought it and then hardly used it at all..

-- just sold it this last Sept. - it had 23,500 miles....it was a great motorcycle - now on to an 1199R, and loving it as well !

-- i was asking $38k - but ended up selling it for less(milage kind of weighed on the resale here).....it was just time for it to go, i long ago gave up "collecting" or trying to hold on to bikes i have used - it just becomes another job for me....not to mention, i have never found myself "going back" to any of the ones i threw a blanket over, since whatever newer bike i got would receive all my attention - granted, the desmosedici would have been the 1 exception to that, but it's gone now.....someone is paying more attention to it :)

here:Question: Desmo's been with us for a while now - are we still loving the bike... - Page 3 - ducati.org forum | the home for ducati owners and enthusiasts

Atleast I hope you felt you got every penny of your money's worth through the 23k miles you put on it and you got every possible free servicing done on it too.. that was a nice perk to have on that bike for the money paid for it. Good luck with the current owner who has to pay up for the servicing now and deal with part delays.

The SL doesn't have free servicing and has a 2 yr warranty but atleast the servicing knowledge is the same as the regular Pani

-- frankly, this is the one vice i allow myself, and i never try to quantify it for "value, or worthiness"....i just enjoy the bikes for what they are, and move on to the next one......the free service appointments were far from free, since it always needed a clutch -- admittedly, going forward, paying for parts will be a true test of enthusiasm :)

-- the SL will be much friendlier in the service dept - i just looked at the 7500 mile requirements for the R, and essentially its an oil change - valves at 15,000 - however, the full Ti valve set on the desmosedici "isn't cheap" i remember $649 per valve, and $40 per shim - on my first service i needed 8 Ti exhaust valves which Ducati provided free because of the good will feelings, or the maintenance plan....i don't know which

Thanks for the info RD, I wasn't aware that the price was so high on the Desmo. I envy you for owning one! Simply put, an amazing bike to say the least.

I agree with you, the SL is pretty amazing considering it is 100 percent factory. I do applaud Ducati for offering such pieces of art. There are not many companies that offer such things.

Dang.. imagine if that 15k mile service on your D16RR wasn't free.. that's like $11k worth of parts right there..

The 3 yrs worth of free service during the warranty was part of the purchase

put a deposit down, got the award, read the forum, got scared, put it up for sale before it even got delivered.

classic.

Seems like there should be thousands lined up behind him if some of the bs on here was true on what a priviledge it is to pay for one of those?
