evidently...it is somewhat negative :)

Well my response was really pointed to the OP ..who talked (a while back) of cashing his 401k to buy one...so please bear that in mind...:)

But in general I am of the opinion that its way off the mark..price wise...

I am guessing that case is closed now unless a dead horse needs to be flogged...

ok...i can see your point regarding anyone cashing in their 401k.."probably not the most prudent thing to do"

price wise....while expensive, i can see the logic of how it is priced....it isn't for everyone to buy.....but there are plenty of people putting plenty of money in to upgrading their S or Base model....and even more "upgrading" (if you can call it this) their Harleys.....so i'd think the 65k msrp is about where it should be - care to explain your point...?

Based on an earlier post by someone which referred to the Design page of the SL website that the engine design may eventually trickle down to the regular Panigale lineup (for at least the R if they plan to use that as the homologation bike for 2015), then the price of the R is sure to be around $40k if they are gonna add the tungsten balancing inserts on the crank and the racing pistons..

Not sure if they will expand the deal with Akrapovic (am sure people here would love to see that happen) but I wont be surprised if that is a one-off deal with only the SL

Well please understand that this will not be an exercise in objectivity...:)

The Desmosedici (which I know you had) was unique within the Ducati range..was basically a "dumbed down" version of a MotoGp bike and therefore commanded a price which reflected this..ie $circa $72000

Now the SL is a suped up version of the 1199... The engine ..whilst somewhat modified..is a 1199 motor... the output is "in excess of 200hp".. so not really a paradigm shift from my $19000 base..

The weight savings are not great ..20lbs ish...If I added Ohlins/Akra to my base and had it tuned using a power commander I bet it would be very close to the equal of this bike and save me in excess of $35000.. Its shouldn't be possible for me to modify my bike and come even close this cost effectively...but I can in all the important ways anyway...

I don't want to get exhaustively into the differences..

I think all in all its simply not worth a $45000 premium over my bike ..All this is my opinion...one that carries no more but also no less than anyone elses..:)

-- simple math is the answer for me - thats how i see it is reasonably priced - and like all R models before it, essentially a bargain, saving you the time hassle and uncertainty of any shade tree mechanics that will more than likely never be as good as factory....but, we both know "opinions do vary"......

That's cool... I have given you my reasons I feel the bike isn't a good buy..for you things are different... we can all get along...:)

what's your life worth when you don't risk anything and you'll have to take your dreams to your grave one day?

So....Are you buying one??

lol...as a matter of fact....no...it is just how the stars lined up for me...i purchased the 1199r, and i'm loving it - had i still been riding my zx6 (having not purchased the R it would have been 2 seasons on the zx6) i'd easily rationalize the purchase (no matter how irrational you might think that'd be) ;) so in essence buying the R saved me some money

Not for me to rationalise your spending...unless a cashed in 401k was involved..;)

I chose not to order one but am not negative of the bike or its presentation. While Ducati should make a tidy sum per bike I also feel that thouse who chose to spend that amount will find value in their perchase.

I maybe would track it only two times a year and spend the rest of the time on the street. I happen to realy like the tri and can now get one for 3K off. I have one reserved and will be reqesting a couple of mods for that price.

The SL is really an R with a couple of light weight shocks and Akra. Not even close to the Desmo as a like upgrade from existing bikes. It's way over priced - but it will still sell, and be worth 30K in 5 years at most.
