I bought a base because I want to ride the bike. It is much easier to justify a price difference when you are comparing say, a V6 Mustang vs V8 or a C-class vs C63AMG.... When the bike has the same engine and I will be able to extract the exact same amount of performance from both and the only difference is I am way more scared to drop one vs the other what becomes the point of owning the expensive version? Only to show people what you got....and I have yet to make a purchase for someone else to appreciate (outside of gifts of course).

why all the drama......if you can afford one and want it, buy it.....try to remember there are others that might appreciate if you told us how it is to ride and own...so "write your own article" about it too :)

Damn right…can't tell you how much I enjoyed acowsik's recount of his 2014 1199 R ownership.
Is there a chance you overestimate the level of interest people may have for someone else's story about a bike they don't have, unless this someone else is a world class rider, or at least a well respected in this field journalist.

My .02 cents is that you don't have to be a motoGP rider or even ride the bike to its last 5% to benefit from the performance gains of this bike. Better Suspension, lighter weight and better power to weight ratio equals better handling, quicker acceleration, faster, and bettering breaking. Am I missing something here? Who wouldn't want that? Anyone would benefit whether on the track, canyon runs, open roads or just driving on the street. There are a lot of people who mod their bikes (myself included) to get their bikes to perform to these specs. I know a lot of people who spent more than $65K to mod a R1, GSXR 1000 to get that type of performance and it didn't have the "prestige" of an Ducati SL badge and the bikes are not sitting in the garage or tooling around to show off. People buy $120K 911 Turbo or $85K M3 for performance versus a $20K KIA. The KIA will get you from Point A to Point B just like the 911 Turbo or M3 will. But the KIA will do it at a cheaper total cost of ownership. But if you had a choice most will choose the 911 or M3 if they could afford it. Superbikes were meant to handle well and go very fast. If you use just tool around town on a Super Bike I think its crazy, because there are much better bikes to tool around on.

Agreed. "Most" won't use a base, S, or R for what it's worth. While I understand the price point of it I think it will be one of those bikes that's bought just to say you have it, regardless of its stats. And my guess the buyers will be those that the cash spent is their monthly allowance for toys.

And what about the people who like to collect nice/special things for their personal/private enjoyment. Not necessarily to show off to anybody, but just because they appreciate the item for what it actually is.

Sort of like unofficial custodians for the next generations to appreciate.

I totally agree with your wisdom and common sense.

Awesome machine serving up 220 BHP, Begging to be modified a lot further

My vote is in now. For the price and what I can get out of it performance wise with my abilities...I would rather have my Tri. Nice bike but I couldn't justify spending $65k.

Now if I had $65k laying around and no better way to spend it...then sure I would get one!

Awesome machine.

I wish I could have one of each including the baby Pani (899).

Base,
"S",
Tri,
"R",
Superleggera

I think they all have there own character.

After seeing the spec I believe this is still an awesome bike.

Is it worth $65k yes because this bike's spec seems better: lighter, more HP, similar compression ratio, more torque, easier to ride, electronically more advanced than the Desmodeci RR which went or $75K MSRP and people paid $100K or more for them. Maybe they paid that much because of the mystique it has of being a MotoGP replica. Theorically this bike should spank the Desmodeci RR performance spec below

Power 177 hp (132 kW) @ 13,250 rpm at the rear wheel[4]
Quarter mile 9.49 seconds @ 152.80 mph (245.91 km/h)[5]
Acceleration[4]
0-100 mph 5.53 seconds
0-140 mph 8.99 seconds
0-180 mph 16.59 seconds
Top speed 190.78 mph (307.03 km/h)

I guess we won't know until someone does a review but these are Big shoes to fill
