1299 Base vs. 1299S

Help Support Ducati Forum:

I usually put a nice chunk down and then just pay it off early (keeps my credit rating at almost 840), I got 5.5% through VW finance which isn't great, but not terrible. Life is short, get something that makes you happy - this bike puts a huge smile on your face.

But I have decided that, I may not even like riding, so either sometime this year or next, depends on how things go, I will get the KTM RC390,

I'd love to have one of those. Not as a "instead-of" but as an addition to my 1199. Small displacement bikes have their own unique fun factor.

But I've been told the RC390 is all sold out this year for N.A.

You are right in many ways. I dont know much about the financial situation in Canada but 9% interest is pretty high and you seem very grounded from what you are saying.

I would look around for a better interest rate, or plan to it off early.

Good Luck!

Thanks! Yeah the reason I set those things rather high is I want to be realistic, and I'm sure we have all learned a lesson when too many times we might expect better than we will actually get, and reality kicks in and leaves you disappointed. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst. By the time I can even get a 1299, they will have been out for 1 or 2 years, so hopefully MSRP on it comes down a bit, or maybe I can get a deal on a older model.

Paying off early would be great, currently no gf or kids or anything, 26 this July, I'll get that KTM and if I really love riding, I'll get the 1299 base or S next, hopefully will be able to keep the KTM as well.

9% interest is ridiculous. Don't do it man, you'll be making payments during the winter (8months) on something that you can't even use. You can get a Line of Credit from your bank for way lower.

Grind your dealer in calgary, you can get them down to $22k otd. I don't judge anyone, but my theory is with toys if I can't pay it out right I don't need it. Get the 390, you'll have more fun riding a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow!

I totally feel you on that, and its something I thought about, but due to my current situation, no kids or massive responsibilities I think I can afford to have a little fun, and for sure, I doubt I'd honestly pay 30k, even if it meant going up to edmonton or buying out of province, I'd do what I could to get a better deal haha.

And yeah, the 390 looks like a blast, accelerates faster than most cars and still can hit about 180kmh, so plenty fast for me to start out with, not to mention more torque at its lowest point than the cbr300, ninja 300, and r3 at their max.

You get what ya get I guess, gotta prepare to not get what you want. But yeah, I figure the same thing. I'm in a position where I can perhaps go with what I want even though its no exactly a great choice financially. You only live once, as they say. Do what makes ya happy.

I'd love to be able to keep it when I get that 1299 in a year or 2. But who knows. It sure looks like a really fun bike. And I'm sure being able to gun it and just ride balls to the wall on something that small could be more fun than riding the 1199 at half what it can do!

Honestly the biggest liability you guys have in the (truly) great white north is the super short riding season. If I can't ride a bike March though November I'm not sure I would even bother, just buy a snow machine and a dirt bike

One of the reasons I moved south from Detroit was to escape more of the boring winter months with nothing to do - winter sucks

Darn good think I set my bar high for the price. Base is $23364 OTD, and the S.... $29349 OTD... That is brutal.

Hi I've ordered the 1299 base, because for the extra $ the S costs , for me I am fitting a carbon front guard , decals and getting the Akrapovics fitted at the first service . Ok I won't have the led headlamp , light wheels or the OHLINS , although I'll have a neat sounding ride ..ETA 2weeks

Weird. I don't understand credit sometimes. I've paid off 6 vehicles early and my credit isn't anywhere near this. Paid off my wife's last vehicle two years early and my FICO dropped 50 points.

Last two vehicles and the 1299S got paid in cash for this reason.

I'm in the same position - s or base. Only thing I can come up with is less to insure and less to go wrong.

1299 has a bit more torque from the other bikes though, according to the test below.

I have a feeling those dyno numbers are either false or not stock...

RSV4 RF is an impressive machine, I knew it would be, but 1 sec faster lap time seems like a stretch. Looking forward to the RR World Shootout

I went through the same dilemma in '08 with the 1098. I bought the base, rode it for 7 years and never second guessed myself. I really loved that bike and it still looked brand new when I traded it in.

I also had the same thoughts on the 1299 but just couldn't justify the extra $5K for a daily driver so that decision was a little easier. I am just short of 600 miles and can't stop smiling. I will spend some money and upgrade some stuff over the years, but that's part of the fun. It really is an exceptional bike, especially coming from a 7 year old dinosaur.

Moral of the story, they are both good bikes, but like everyone else has said just get what is going to make you happy. I have a Ducati 1299 and couldn't be happier.

It's actually $6k, plus extra tax. The base 50 mm Marzocchi fork is good and the Sachs rear is easily swapped if needed for $600 - it's a no brainer for the street

I decided to go with the 1299 Base since I only ride the street and the $5700 price difference. I will upgrade some of the parts over time though. If I hadn't bought a GTR earlier this year, I would have bought the 1299S.

Many Euro tests figure in a drivetrain loss and quote a crank or clutch figure based on adding a percentage of loss to the RWHP number they got. Not sure why, just seems to be customary. Still useful for figuring strength relative to the others if done on the same day. But even tire differences will skew the numbers quite a bit.

Those numbers are about 10 hp higher than the MCN test across the board (and even those numbers seemed generous) - optimistic dyno but still an impressive result for the RF

So you're saying that the 2015 S1000rr is well above 200hp, at the crank or other wise?

It wouldn't surprise me, but it's just a number at the end of the day. The comparison is useful since it was all the bikes at the same time.

MCN reported 198 RWHP for a stock 2015 S1000rr a few months ago

New BMW S1000RR: 198bhp on the dyno! | MCN

Here is a built one done by EDR Performance thats been racing in OMRRA. Still 1000cc, but a LOT of work into it. Edit: Actually the dyno notes are that it still has the stock velocity stacks, stock airbox, stock crank and stock clutch. So more probably possible. Again, on THIS dyno.
