I'm not knocking as built bikes, I'm sure people have skills and knowledge that allows them to produce some real nice stuff, I get that. But the reality is for me, after all that effort and all the expense, what's the resale value of these 'home brew' motorcycles? Not much more than 4 digits?
Resale is a funny thing. If you figure % of money lost against when new would I would agree. However, if you figure the actual money lost for depreciation on a 1199 SL against a built up 1199 S, I'm not so sure....?
....Crunching the numbers....
If you bought a 1199 SL (out the door) a few years ago here in Wa. It would have cost you around $71,000. Now the same bike is worth around $48,000 to a private party, or roughly a $23,000 loss.
A 2014 1199S sold for around $23,000 new and now will still fetch around $14,000, a $9,000 loss
The $14,000 difference can buy a lot of parts... An added bonus is that when you sell the bike you can remove the farkles and then sell them used on the forum or E-bay for at least 50 cents on the dollar.
So let's say you put an additional $20,000 into a 1199S and build it up beyond a SL level as endodoc suggests. Then take most the accessories off and sell them a few years later you will still come out a little money ahead as opposed to a owning a SL. Of course, it is a hassle and time consuming, but then again you tied up $71,000 of your money on a SL compared to $43,000 on the built up 1199 S.
IMHO-For me that $28,000 difference is money that can be better used for a good investment fund.
Just my 2 cents
But Hey!! Honestly, if I was independently wealthy and had little spare time between work and family obligations then I would buy the SL and just go enjoy it when I could.
I'm sure it will work out the same in a few years when comparing the 1299 SL to a 1299 S or R FE.
Either path you chose is right or wrong depending on the individual. So IMO - Just go buy it or build it, but do it now. Life is short, now go out and enjoy yourself.
