Well Reno power sports just called and said they have an SL that is up for grabs. The intended owner got sick so it is up again. He said he was calling everyone that wanted a numbered bike and asked if I was interested. $88k with the taxes makes it way to steep for me. He also mentioned a lot of people interested in it which strikes me odd why he would call me then.

I suspect this will be the narrative that we're going to hear over the next few months.

Yea I saw that.. Apparently there is no track day with it? They said it was limited to only the for first 60 people ..

you can acquire same or better pieces from other vendors and avoid the D markups, which they have to add to uphold and maintain for their air of exclusivity so that customers such as yourself can feel* vindicated (ie not too badly taken advantage of).

edit: & i'm not intimating here that you got taken for purchasing the 1299sl, since it really is limited edition and will have some kind of (inelastic) demand, hence price support.

Sure. This is a few mods ago but its similar

Any chance of some larger pics Endo? It's hard to make out from these photos what you have done to the bike. You've documented it well enough, but as I said not much to visually gleen from these.

...you mean Brand-X....uhh, while the builders build, riders can ride....but in the end, all that needs be said: "you ride that (when possible), and i'll ride this"

no digs here, just real honest opinion....we spend our cash and enjoy things different ways

ps: i wonder if endodoc uses aftermarket on his planes ?

Hi first post here name is Lee I bought a 1299SL . Does anyone know if Ducati has a bracket or mod where you can have the kick stand with the AK pipes on the bike? I love the looks of those pipes thank you very much great to be here.

Mmmm, all you guys thinking about investment value on late model bikes , id be looking for a steal on a model pre '80 . Actually i have a 2012 Ltwin, full carbon (not the frame) and best of everything available at the time, built to order from the factory . Weighs 180kg fully fuelled , 183 rwhp, and only 200 made . Its worth less than half now what it cost me then. Personal one on one guided tour of the factory by the chief engineer and met the 3 guys who built it . Then 2 years after purchase get an email dirctly from the factory inviting me to join other ex customers and media for a 2 day ride day with the company owners at a track in Italy. Not to mention free piss up and accommodation on the factory ! Bit more exclusive than the SL offer ?

There is no bracket to allow the install of the Race Exhaust & Belly Pan together with the Side Stand

- the Side Stand will fit with the Race Exhaust without the Belly Pan installed....just be sure to smooth off the point of contact of the side stand & the exhaust, as the side stand tends to make contact

Possibly when the FE becomes available, together with the Race Exhaust, things may change

Thanks RD yeah good idea the FE will be out soon and I'm sure Ducati will have something for the SL. Dont want to take a chance on voiding any warranties too.

A lot of people would be interested in it; entirely another matter for those willing to step forward and make the commitment NOW which is what he's trying to find. The person who got sick - it was probably from buyer's remorse. I wonder if that cost him 8 or 16 grand.

did you pick your SL up ?

i wouldn't be too sure they will offer anything....this is the first street bike they released with a Race Exhaust in a box along with a Prop Stand, to indicate "No Race Exhaust" on the street....

...time will tell....

I think you are totally missing the point of why people buy special editions... because they are special / rare / unique. Could you build a bike that could lap a track faster than an SL for less money? Maybe. But it wouldn't be an SL.

Exactly!

I gotta say it. Everyone who is reading this is thinking what a pretentious as$clown you are.

He showed his true colors way back lol Im part of a couple motorcycle forums and i can honestly say ive never seen anyone more stuck up than him. Doesnt matter what the thread is about he has to chime in with his oh so mighty build lol

Lets see some pics of you and wealth that you have amassed.

Keepin it classy as usual lol takes a real hot shot to say something lame like this.

Im pretty sure i said this to him before in another thread but the internet gets it, you can afford to buy top quality parts and bolt them on :D but its ....... pathetic for you to chime in to every thread about a LE bike claiming you can build a better bike.

...the builders and cake bakers of the motorcycle mod world will never cease to scrutinize how to concock another science project that, in their minds, (and obviously other like same minded people) "beats the factory" at its own game

i say this:

they have been called out repeatedly to stack up, itemize, detail "The Build" that for less, gives you more.....all i've gotten back were....."crickets".....LOL !

maybe they build a "kinda sorta" SL, with "kinda sorta" the parts sourced globally, and then pat themselves on the back as having these parts assembled by someone for some unknown price that would "in the end "equal a better bike, for less"....as for the 1299SL, they wouldn't even come close....and as has been pointed out many times over....the cost would be way higher in the end, and to that end you have yourself a specialty built non-factory bike

"good luck with that" !!

I can see both sides. I personally like Endodoc's attitude. If you have the skills and some money then go for it!! But, I would agree it can get a little tiresome hearing Endodoc tell us that all the time! :roll eyes:

People spend years building experimental aircraft. Others build handcrafted furniture or sailboats ... Remember that it's a hobby, an outlet to be creative and think out of the box. There are those who would like to do more to there bikes but don't have the time, skills, tools, to do a high end build. Finally, there are those who simply don't have the spare time but still want the sheer enjoyment of riding a unique and rare performance vehicle. So they go out and buy it.

Years ago I worked in the kitchen of my fathers french restaurant. Today I will sometimes go thru the the trouble of cooking a 10 course meal for friends and family. Then again, sometimes I will just say ".... it" and spend the money to try some really good haute cuisine.

For some it's all about the journey and for others it's about the destination. Either way is is OK with me...:)

Yup - You're right on target here

I'm not knocking as built bikes, I'm sure people have skills and knowledge that allows them to produce some real nice stuff, I get that. But the reality is for me, after all that effort and all the expense, what's the resale value of these 'home brew' motorcycles? Not much more than 4 digits?

Resale is a funny thing. If you figure % of money lost against when new would I would agree. However, if you figure the actual money lost for depreciation on a 1199 SL against a built up 1199 S, I'm not so sure....?

....Crunching the numbers....

If you bought a 1199 SL (out the door) a few years ago here in Wa. It would have cost you around $71,000. Now the same bike is worth around $48,000 to a private party, or roughly a $23,000 loss.

A 2014 1199S sold for around $23,000 new and now will still fetch around $14,000, a $9,000 loss

The $14,000 difference can buy a lot of parts... An added bonus is that when you sell the bike you can remove the farkles and then sell them used on the forum or E-bay for at least 50 cents on the dollar.

So let's say you put an additional $20,000 into a 1199S and build it up beyond a SL level as endodoc suggests. Then take most the accessories off and sell them a few years later you will still come out a little money ahead as opposed to a owning a SL. Of course, it is a hassle and time consuming, but then again you tied up $71,000 of your money on a SL compared to $43,000 on the built up 1199 S.

IMHO-For me that $28,000 difference is money that can be better used for a good investment fund. Just my 2 cents

But Hey!! Honestly, if I was independently wealthy and had little spare time between work and family obligations then I would buy the SL and just go enjoy it when I could.

I'm sure it will work out the same in a few years when comparing the 1299 SL to a 1299 S or R FE.

Either path you chose is right or wrong depending on the individual. So IMO - Just go buy it or build it, but do it now. Life is short, now go out and enjoy yourself. :D
