1299 vs R1 (size and ergos)

All great points. Thanks for the input!!!!
(Also posted the same question in r1 forum. Much better/supportive feedback here. Speaks to the Ducati community.)

I rode a 1299 and loved it before buying the r1m. But bought the r1m because if I passed I may not have the opportunity again. Now I'm not sure that was a good idea. I sat on the pani R recently and it felt good but so did the R1 at first. Without riding back to back I can't really tell...
Putting in time on the r1m my wrists do hurt... Clip ons and rear sets is a good idea BUT I don't know how much adjustments I can get. Fractions of an inch don't seem significant. Maybe it is just enough...

The street is another matter, where it's more or less a torture device. :)

For sure.

No way I would own a Panigale as a "daily driver". It just doesn't make sense to me. It is hot, uncomfortable (relative to other choices), doesn't like slow speeds and lower RPM's, isn't that great on gas and on the street it cant be ridden to more than about 25% of its potential.

The only reasoning I could see in having it as a street bike is because it looks cool. But you cant see how cool it looks while riding it. Which means you are only riding it because other people will think it is cool...which is ridiculous. Who gives a .... what random people on the road think? Im not going to be uncomfortable in my riding just so other people will think I am on a cool bike.

I am sure people do/will say "I ride mine all day, it is fine and im perfectly comfortable". And that is because of 2 reasons:
1.) People have to justify their purchase decisions. Somebody wanted a Panigale, so they got one...no way they are going to be like "that was a poor choice". They will say whatever they have/want to say to make it seem like it was a good idea.
2.) They don't have anything to compare it to. If somebody was to spend time on a bike that is truly meant for the street, there is no way they would believe a Panigale is the better option.

There are a ton of bikes that are MUCH better suited for street riding. Multistrada, Tuono, Speed Triple, MV Brutale, Superduke, Streetfighter, Diavel, Z1000 or Ninja 1000 or any one of the new naked bikes that are based off of Liter sportbikes (Suzuki, BMW and Honda have some good ones). So on and so forth.

I do have aftermarket rearsets and thicker seat but miles more room than the 848 I came from.

Yep. The ergos can be dramatically changed with some aftermarket clip-ons, levers and rearsets. And for taller people, a thicker seat helps a lot. It increases the distance between the seat and the pegs (not to mention it is more comfortable on your ...).

I'm 6ft, and I absolutely love the Panigale as my daily driver. DP race seat and Gia Moto rearsets mounted 15mm up and 7 forward makes it a perfect fit, and I can drive until the tank is empty, fill it, and repeat until I need food. I've driven over 1000km in one day without any problems at all

And I have done the same on several sportbikes. The first week I owned my R1 I put 2400 miles on it.

BUT...there is still no way it can compare to something like a Tuono or Multistrada in terms of ease and comfort of street riding.

You will get used to anything if you ride it enough. Your body will adapt. These bikes aren't ment to be commuters, it was never in their design brief. 2-300 klm. and I'm ready to get off.

Amen. Also, many of those bikes are objectively better for street riding, in addition to just being more comfortable. They have more compliant suspension, make their torque lower in the curve, provide a better view of the road and obstacles around, etc and are just considerably more fun to ride on the street than something like a 1299. In fact I'm in the market for a big naked myself now that my pani is track only. :) Really like the s1kr.

Comfortable, not a chance but besides looking at it in the garage it's also fun to ride... Painful, thirsty and hot.

My s1000rr was more comfortable than my Diavel for longer rides and got 60 or more miles to a tank of gas but I wanted to ride my a Diavel a hell of a lot more it just couldn't meet my needs when riding at speeds that I shouldn't have been riding in the first place lol.

Even Full sport Liter bikes from other manufacturers have better ergos than the Panigale with exception of Zx10. They don't have the character but can be ridden for longer periods and are better around town where the Pani sucks. My famous analogy: Above 100 mph the Pani is the best sport bike made, under 100 mph the worst.:D

Without a doubt.

For street riding, a Honda CBR1000RR is a much better choice, or even a GSX-R1000. Or to be honest, the KTM 1190 is actually the best choice. It feels almost exactly like my Triumph Sprint ST....so comfortable.

In my experience it has a lot to do with seating position and anchoring technique. I got stomp grips, and adjusted the rearset to wedge my knees and tighs into the pads, and it took all the load off my wrists as I don't need to gibe anchoring much thought anymore

That helps a lot. Not only for comfort, but to keep from putting unwanted inputs into the bars. At any given time the grip should be light enough on the bars that if the bars were toothpaste, you wouldn't even squeeze any out.

Nice analogy to remember next time I'm on track.

I'm 6'5'' 225 and I am comfortable with the comfort seat which has a little more padding and is a little taller.
I just depends on what you consider comfortable.. If you are comparing it to the other (non sport bike ) bikes you have been riding it will not ever be comfortable.. It was not meant to be a touring bike it is a race bike with lights..
It is what it is...In my opinion it is pretty comfortable to ride in the way it was intended to ride.

Same logic from one's grip while running; if you were to imagine holding a bag of potato chips, you wouldn't crush any.

Ive got 09 R1 and i can do long rides (hours) its more upright and i have a bad back, what about doing long rides on the panigale 1199?

Im 5'7'' 100kg

I'm 6'3" and 120 kgs and have had no issues with comfort on the Pani, if you are looking to do longer rides the cruise control is a must, just releases the wrists to give you a bit of a break, I get pins and needles on all the bikes I have ridden and the cruise is a definite benefit. Comfort is definitely a personal thing, I have ridden all types of bikes for over 30 years and the worst was a Harley, I am just used to having my feet under me when I'm riding, not in front, didn't even own a car till I was 42, rode every day and all sports bikes are much the same for commuting, it's when you stretch them that you notice the differences.

Cheers

I'd be wary of basing my purchase decision on how the bikes feel ergonomically in stock trim. As previously mentioned, clip ons and adjustable footrests (yokes if need be) can be fitted to any bike to dial a rider's size in.

There are an infinite number of reasons to justify why we buy motorcycles. Despite what you read online, in the mags, or hear at the track, there is no wrong reason for buying a particular kind of bike and using it in whatever environment you choose.

We get so caught up in pure performance figures that we often fail to factor in the sensual aesthetic side of motorcycling. For many, the bike needs to move us standing still as much as it does in the meat of it's power curve. Anyone who try's to tell you differently has lost a bit of the magic that comes with the sport.

All that said, I would be looking into the competency of my local Yamaha dealer to perform major engine work. Given the massive recall on the gearboxes, I would want that piece of mind to cover any potential future issues. I would also be paying attention to how each bike delivers it's power. What feels perfectly peachy to one rider may feel like an unusable tractor with NASA rockets bolted to the sides of it to another rider.

Lastly, get familiar with all of the little gremlins that are inherently apparent with each model. Every manufacturer has them.
