I had a look into what pistons are in the 15 and the information I got back was the Euro bikes have the two ring SL pistons while the bikes going to the US still have the three ring pistons as in the 14R but have been machined lighter .
Just passing information .

Why is that?

I know the US has strict noise/emissions laws and sometimes US bikes have different ECUs (or programming). But I have never heard of a company using different engine parts for a US bike.

What do they gain/lose by doing that?

The respective Spare Parts Catalogues for Euro and USA 15Rs have the same part numbers for the piston assemblies. And they're each shown as 2-ring set-ups.

I was told because of emission laws but like I said I was only sharing info from someone who knew or maybe didn't .At the end of the day who knows unless a motor is pulled apart .
The 998 range had different motors to the Euro bikes so it's not uncommon.

Mis-informed, your source Wilks. We get the two ring pistons, same as the SL.

I currently have the 2013 tricolore S, thoughts on whether it's a worthwhile upgrade?

I find the lack of genuine information as to the engine construction a bit of a turn off

It's a better bike . Lighter crank SL cams lighter Pistons .its a big step on the Triicolore. I have friend just stepped up from the 1199 to the 15 R in my race series did his first meeting on it at SMP three weeks ago .
He wasn't any quicker on it but he will be once he gets the bike sorted he was impressed with the extra power .

Just from what people are saying in this thread it would be, but it also depends on how you use the bike. Be prepared to take a hit if you trade it in or sell it privately as well.

Not really just discussing the finer details . The basics to the motor have always been available different cams crank and Pistons have always been a certain it just wasn't certain which ones they were .

Cams cross reference to SL and Pan R only
Pistons cross reference to SL and Pan R only
Valves cross reference to Pan R only, which draws more questions......
Crank cross reference to SL and Pan R only
Rods cross reference to SL and all R's

Flywheel and Gen (listed together) cross reference to 1299 and Pan R only

While my 14R is in for warranty work, + battery cable battery to relay & relay to starter melted then shorted out on the SSTK header & killed the whole elec' system. I called around some Ducati specialist and came across a used BSD Magnetti Marelli SRT WSBK system that came from a 1098R so just waiting on price with correct new harness, mounting brackets & mapping but hoping I can get it for close to half cost of new ?

Half price is still going to be close to 10 grand installed. There is a great writeup on that system installed by Boulder Motorsports on the Panigale in the March 2014 issue of RRW. Never heard of it being used on a streetbike though. Would think lots of functions wouldn't work.

It's Boulder who I'm talking to if I can swing the deal I'll do the install myself then go back for any Dyno work but according BDS it fully functioning system they have maps for just about any engine tyre combo. I just do my own stand alone head & tailight with mini LEDs
Just get away from the dealer only Mitsubishi system

Curious about the heads . Do the heads have different part numbers to the previous R and do they cross reference the SL along with the head gaskets ?

What have you damaged ?

Damn, a Marelli system is a pretty drastic step for an ignition switch!

Bravo, let us know if you pull the trigger.

The heads do not cross reference to any of bike. Listed for the 15 R only.
