21 v4s motor dead at 5k miles

I feel that for $17K you don’t seem that upset. I’d sure as hell want a lot better of an explanation and an exact reason they’re refusing to warranty it.

Well its not like I'm not mad about it. It's my favorite bike I've ever owned but im also not gonna sit around and just complain about it. I'll be back on the road as soon as a motor shows up on ebay that's decent. Better than 17k plus shipping on a brand new motor.

To deny a warranty claim, they have to have a reason. “I think it’s going to blow up” is as good as you saying it’s not going to blow up if there’s no evidence to back it up. Sounds a bit dubious.

How old is you bike? Which year?

2021. So max age would be 2-3 years.

There has to be some sort of documentation of what was done and findings. Seems a slam dunk warranty repair if everything is legit even if it was tracked. If they could prove that it was raced competitively then you might be SOL but not sure how’d they’d know that.

Any 3rd party mods? Tunes?

If it’s not under warranty then why would the whole motor need to be replaced?

Diagnose and repair as needed!

It's a 21 panigale v4s with a full system and akra map 5k miles and it developed a coolant leak which supposedly caused internal damage.

I’m no subject matter expert, but the only way a coolant leak should impact the motor is if it lost enough coolant to overheat.

I'm a bike mechanic but not a ducati master mechanic I'm gonna take it apart and it should be pretty obvious what caused it. It could be something really easy or it could be a cracked case who knows at this point and I'm not gonna guess if they don't want to do the work I'll do it and take pictures of every step of the way. The leak was in-between the V for sure right where the water pump and gasket go.

Buy a spare and blueprint this one. If Mark Sutton says 5k track miles between refreshs I'd believe him. Smart guy and has built a lot of race motors. Does anyone know the specs of the R cams? It would seem the timing would be longer and maybe more lift.

They flew a guy in to look at it only to not proceed with the repair? This whole thing seems odd. There’s a weird vagueness.

He literally told them stop everything they were doing then he listened to it running is what I was told they didn't give me any more detail than that and wouldn't when I asked He said "it would be a waste of money and time for the customer, if we repair the superficial problems the bike could still blowup within 100 miles and the customer would not only be out the money on the parts they replaced but also the motor as well." That was the exact explanation they seem to think it's not even worth fixing or trying to fix. No details outside of that unfortunately.

And you’re cool w this explanation? You have that in writing?

As a bike mechanic, is this how you’d handle a warranty claim?

How do you even hear anything internally with that raucous exhaust? What specifically did he hear that caused him to stop the warranty claim?

Clearly no however this problem sat there for 6 months and the RO doesn't even have anything related to the motor failure other than the coolant system supposedly I'm getting some type of paperwork but the initial warranty claim was denied on the water system itself.

You sure you shipped your bike to a dealer and not to a clown like @andyb? Haha

As I said I didn't get to talk to the master ducati mechanic at all. What I was told is what I said. I'll find out in a day or 2 what actually happened. Atm it looks like you should treat the v4 motors like the v4r motors.

I hate how everything in dealerships these days is just remove and replace without knowing what went wrong, why it went wrong and the viability of repair. Whole engines included. Interested to see how the coolant leak correlates to the outcome like Craig said.

Well considering the bike was running strong and likely still is outside of the coolant leak who knows. But i intend to check every single tolerance ducati has for the motor from top to bottom.

Also that's really the sad part mechanic's don't really repair .... anymore at dealerships they just remove and replace parts so it's not surprising they couldn't figure it out since they are taught from school to just find the broken part and replace it.

That's every dealer mechanic in the automotive industry. Their strength is that they have access to more information. They shotgun parts like a ............ though.

Interesting. I think the V4R motor is 3k refresh, and the 1103 motor at 6k? According to the race schedule.
