So I've been kicking the idea of getting one. I think I have been hanging out on the ADV forum a bit too much :D

Anyone ride a KTM 1190r or the bimmer 1200gs? Please give me your input of what you guys think of them, they seem fun but I'm afraid they are a bit heavy.

Yep . I have owned a BMW 1200 GS a KTM 1190 R and I hide a KTM 1190 for my trip through Germany and Austria . I currently have a KTM 1290 Super Adventure . Will you be doing more road than dirt or more dirt or a bit of both ?

I've been tossing this idea around 2 and I narrowed it down to 2 of them after talking with Wilk a bit and riding them. KTM or Multi Enduro.. Havent gotten to ride the Multi yet...

This was a "hand me down" from dad to me"¦

That's a little more adventurous than the trips I go on

KTM 1280 R is the best bike for a serious dirt style adventure bike . Steer away from the Ducati .

My dad was an alter boy in the church and was given this bike as a sign of "peace" by the head priest.

I'm thinking I will be 60/40 road to dirt.

By best hike you mean the 1290r? Not 1280 right cuz I don't think KTM makes a 1280.

Only complaints I hear about the KTM are that everything is plastic but that wouldn't bug me. I think that would be the more serious off road? Although I love the look of the bmw and I'm sure they are very capable I'm just worried about the weight.

The off road parts will me more fire roads than anything with the occasional trips to the mountains.

True ATV

Drz400s got the SM wheel on it currently. Takes me 30min. To put the knobbies on.

Yep 1290 typo error . Yes the KTM does have a bit of plastic but more dirt bike type plastic that will be dither than rack and break like the MTS .
I like the KTM1290 R a lot it's a go anywhere type bike with a excellent motor 21 inch front whelk long travel suspension as well as being a great road bike as well .
The KTM RC 8 motors are sensational with very good fuelling nice a smooth and bucket loads of torque .
If you buy this bike you will not be disappointed it's a light weight compared to the BMW .

While the DRZ is a fantastic bike it will suit the " adventure " rider that will leave from your back door . Lots of riding takes a serious day of riding to get to the good stuff for me anyway and having a multi cylinder bike makes that more enjoyable in the big days in the saddle .

Did you get to ride the Multi Enduro yet, really like to here your thoughts on it.

I haven't but I have owned a couple of MTS 1200 s . They are great bikes but the truth is if your going to use these bikes for what they are made for the Multistrada will not crash well and this will happen .
I tried a little soft reading adventure type stuff on the Multi and ended up with bending the oil filter cover on a washed out bit of road that really put me off the bike .
The 19 inch front wheel is defiantly a step in right direction the bike looks great and sure will be good for the guys that want to do the occasional dirt road but I would not want to be stuck anywhere after a fall . The KTM on the other hand are basic and I would be confident with having to do a bush repair on that bike if I needed to .

Adventure

Good point Wilkson..I have always admired the multi cylinder adventure bikes. I really like the BMW F800

the new honda africa twin looks like a decent bike but i personally like the ktm's 690 and look to put a rally kit on it.

So Wilkson do you have the 1290 adventure? Or the 1190r. I don't see a 1290r here in Canada. I'm kind of leaning towards the 1190r just for the reasons you mentioned.

I think the bimmer would be better in the pavement tho as from what I seen on the 1190r, the sticker on the gas tank says not to go over 160kmh lol. Does it get wobbles after that speed ?

Never seen that sticker must be a Canadian thing only really seen it referring to panniers . Yes I have the 1290 Super Adventure . All these KTM bikes are really comfortable and fun to ride unlike the BMW which is comfortable but a little boring and heavy .
