Anyone thought of doing exhaust wrap?

Surely sitting on top of the headers contributes to the overheat i guess.

Agreed the heat is coming from the radiator and rear head. I just wanted to wrap the rear header as I thought is was a better look than the black metal cover.

Took the bike out today. Outside temp was 71 and bike temp got up to 212. The wrap and inner lining of the shield did reduce the heat. I will have to wait until the temp reaches mid to high 80s to really determine if the wrap helped. So far it looks promising.

To wrap/line shield

Tools you will need:
allenwrench 3, 4, 5 and 6 (i think)
8mm socket for 1/4 in drive
6 in extension or longer with universal joint

Here's what I had to do:
1. remove side fairings
2. remove the 4 allen screws that secures the muffler
3. remove the 3 allen heads that secures the muffler to the mid pipe
4. remove O2 sensor
5. remove springs
6. remove screws from heat shield
7. remove the 3 nuts that secures the header to the cylinder (the biggest headache!!! the nuts are copper so be careful not to strip them)
8. once the header is removed, pull the entire unit out and down and wiggle the upper pipes out with the heat shield at the same time.
9. wrap as needed and/or line the shield
10. after wrap/line shield, install in reverse order.
11. when putting the header back onto the cylinder, secure the 12 o'clock nut first. do not over tighten

Good luck! having smaller hands helped... :)

Is it possible to just remove the shield without the pipes and headers? Sounds like no.

My riding buddy has a 1125 Buelle and it has the same heat problem from exhaust on the right side of the bike. He had his pipes ceramic coated and it all but eliminated the heat issue. Is also comes out looking like high polished aluminum. I am going to do my pipe within the next few weeks and advise the results with pics.

Pssst! Any update on the heat Ducgrl?

oops.. sorry.

I have not ridden the bike in temps over 85 since the wrap was done. So far with the wrap, the heat is manageable. The bike temp got up to 220 in stop and go traffic and I was able to sit there without feeling like my thigh was on fire. Prior to the wrap, I did get burns from the heat. If you have time to spend to wrap the pipe, I say go for it. I will help a little.

Awesome. Thanks for the update. What parts of the pipe did you wrap? I assume just the portion of the pipe coming up from the cans and obviously the loop under the seat?

I lined the heat shield with fiberglass backed heat shield. This is all I have to say...

I love this bike, but I'm ....... disgusted with the lack of engineering in order to make a great bike AND be reasonably serviceable. WTF... Oh well, it's over now and will test tomorrow.

It is great but really bad if not protecting your hands during installation

It does help ... the main part where it helps is it takes longer now for the bike to reach the extreme heat on your bum bum and your thighs ... but at some point it will still reach the meltdown temp ... especially in stop and go traffic. I still have more heat wrap to submit so I only think it will get better.

Remember: Anytime working with high grade heat wrap, wear thick workers gloves so the fiberglass doesn't get into your skin and clothes !!!! TRUST ME!!!

The fiberglass/heat shielding definately didn't work. It gets so hot that the reflective side burns and the adhesive melts. Going to have to remove it tonight, sigh.

Everyone does know that wrapping the pipe will eventually lead to its early demise. Ceramic coating as mentioned by surfshotmoto is probably the best and long term answer. Check out Jet-Hot Ceramic Coatings. Call them with your specific application and they can advise you on the best coating for the pipe. I did it for a race car header system many years ago. It did as advertised. The price was reasonable and the turn around time was within two weeks. I think Commonwealth Motors in Louisville is suggesting to their customers that they coat their pipes to minimize the heat issue.

I've noticed that the heat is a little less with: (1) the richer mapping that comes with the Termi full-system; (2) replacing metal "heat shield" (which actually radiates heat after it quickly becomes saturated) with the carbon fibre heat shield with reflective metal insulation (like Ducgirl installed) that comes the Termi full-system; and (3) the additional heat shield that goes under the tank area, which my dealer installed when he installed the Termi full-system. I am not sure if this heat shield is part of the Termi system or if it is an attempt from Ducati to help address the issue.

So, i wrapped the exhaust today. midway, i ran out of the tape, had just ordered 15 ft and thought it was enough. the SS tie wraps are not my first choice, might look for an alternative. i left the header from the cylinder on, just took the bow off. started at the header and then put the bow back on, continued. also decided to put the oxygen sensor back in before wrapping. about there, i ran out of the first 15 ft, luckily advance autoparts had the titanium tape in stock. tought about getting the 50 ft roll (white), but then decided to continue, as the work was half done and i like the looks more.

thinking about wrapping the horizontal pipe from the front cylinder also, for the consistent look, technically it wouldn't make sense i think, as the heat diffusing there is rather an advantage for the whole system? any thoughts?

I still have to complete my wrapping ... the high quality (temp) wrap works pretty good .. thus far, I have noticed that the bike takes longer to get so hot but it still gets hot. When I complete the exhaust (I had to order more wrap also), I will then get better results of how good this helps.
