That's surprising to me as well. I figured an HP4 would walk away for sure.

I have witnesses lol. I was on his rear for 3/4 of a lap and then got past him and held it in the straights. That being said I can't vouch for the rider. I think differences in bikes are much slimmer than people think.

In terms of performance, I honestly believe the difference between the HP4 and the 1199R comes down to environment and the rider's interface with the machine.

Doesn't matter to me which one is top in performance cause I'll prolly never personally put it to the test. The places where these two machines can safely go completely full out are extremely rare. And if I'm in the saddle, it'll always come down to who's the better rider... because I'm no expert racer and I'm not dumb enough to challenge one :p
 
you'll love it, sweet ride and very user friendly, tho personallly I think the electronics package on the pani is substantially better integrated. Pani quick shifter is much smoother.

Hey Chris...How much have you ridden the Ape???
 
I did about 8 or 9k miles on it before I traded for the pani. I personally felt like the quick shifter was not as smooth as the panis. I also like the menu setup and changes better on the pani.
Do miss the ape, it was a great bike.

Interesting... So I guess you find it odd that someone might consider a reverse of your change in bikes??

I don't think I agree, my experience from the first test ride onward is that the QS on the Ape is smoother than the Pani. The gearbox itself is a bit clunkier. Haven't missed a gear yet (can't say the same for the Pani) but it does make a healthy 'clunk' when changing gears. QS, however, feels buttery smooth, especially on hard acceleration. That's just my opinion, of course.

The pani is far more exotic (and consequently you've got some trade offs for that). The ape, tho many disagree with me, has a very japanese feel to it. It really does stand out in a crowd of japanese bikes like the pani does. Also, the components are not as good on the ape, but overall, if I could only have one bike and the choices were pani or ape, I'd pick the ape hands down.

It's just a easier bike to live with as daily transport. Apes are good reliable bikes too,

That said tho, the pani is a sweet ride and I love the motor. I'm hoping for a streetfighter version in the next year or two (probably wishful thinking). That's the only thing that would' get me to part with my 198 SF (24k miles on it now!)

interesting. On the ape, I found the quick shifter awkward and lumpy at lower rpms it smoothed out at higher rev shifting whereas the pani shifted smoothly regardless of rpms.

You're spot on, the gearbox on the pani is a dream, very smooth. The ape is a bit notchier like on a japanese I4.

Something I never got quite the hang of was launching the rsv4, to get a good launch you have to rev it really high whereas launching the pani was a bit easier/smoother.
Again, as with everything these are opinions YMMV.

Zvez, thanks for the heads up. Fellas over on the RSV4 forum say that QS issues get sorted out if you get Race ECU installed, don't really know how true that is. R is more what I need over the factory, my S has all the parts the factory has and then some. I need something smooth as a daily driver but I can't quite bring myself down to get a cruiser/sport tourer just yet.
 
so I guess you sold the SF? Mine's in for it's 24k service right now. I'm also finally getting the reflashed ECU redline motorsports does for the rotten fueling under 4k rpm

Since we got on the topic of SFs. :) I am finally picking mine up from the dealer tomorrow after that epic oil leak that I couldn't manage to figure out on my own. I fell out of love with the bike for a bit and was considering trading it in, but I find myself really looking forward to tomorrow's ride home and having her back.

That was the problem..I couldn't find it. As far as I could tell I had three leaks - one from the slave, one from the heat exchanger and one from one of the studs on the horizontal cylinder. I even did the dye and blacklight thing, but I couldn't definitively find the source of the one on the horizontal cylinder so I gave up and took it in. The others would have been easy enough - either the O-rings in the lines or new lines for the exchanger and I had already bought a replacement slave (Oberon from Gunny/Belli), but that block leak had me stumped.
