I’m thinking of it being a good deal in more of a macro sense….to me that bike looks as sexy as any Ducati with that livery….and from a performance standpoint you’d be looking at $50k to $70k to build a similar performance level Ducati

Yeah, that R1M anniversary build is nice. It’s also likely quite a bit more expensive - I’m guessing $40k.

I agree - it’s a reasonable value. I’m just saying it’s not some crazy, smoking deal.

New R1’s are available for $17k. $13k in mods goes a long way. The big-ticket items are Ohlins suspension ($4k), ecu/harness ($1-2k), exhaust ($2k), and bodywork ($1k). $3-4k left to complete bolt-ons. Give or take.
But its all done and set up ready to roll, ok you miss out on the upgrade fun but still.
Also a local Ducati dealer said and I quote "the R1 is a far easier bike to ride fast than any Ducati in my shop" this was in 2020 and refering to the M version so maybe its changed now but there it is.

But an R1 is not a Ducati so there is that too :)

I think of Ducati’s like I do Ferrari’s

The reality is that you can buy an old Porsche 944 or a C5 Corvette for 10K, drop another $10k into track specking it, and you will have a faster track day car than any production Ferrari.

But a Ferrari is a Ferrari….you own one because you WANT the Ferrari and can.

I would not say that at all. I had an R1 anniversary a few years ago. Motor was a gem but it was a twitchy little sob to ride (remind you of anything? cough v4 cough). Brakes were numb as hell, on or off (even with changing out to RCS master). Stock suspension was garbage as they all are. Motor was brutal (loved it). The "magnesium" wheels were cast not forged, so not really lightweight. First year models had a cam chain issue that grenaded motors frequently. 2015s and 2016s did not ship with a blipper and you had to go to FT-ECU for a blipper and flash.

Bottom line: bike needed just as much work in setup as any Ducati and was not ready to race out of the box as claimed. I don't know if they magically fixed all the issues in the later "M" models, but I doubt it.

Bike was very pretty though. I thought the new R1 styling and proportions were very Aprilia-like (ain't nothing wrong with ripping off Aprilia in my book). Here's some side by side photos with my RSV4.

Sweet!

It's all opinions anyway, at this level they are all good bikes with a few pros and cons. Yamaha smashed the world titles this year with the help of some talent but it all comes down to what you like to ride, for me the Ducati is a far better fit for my 6'4" frame.

I also ordered those Rizoma wing mirrors and will move the turn signals down to the forks via the Rage Turn Signal setup. Currently the turn signals are where the mirrors will go.

I resisted buying these wing mirrors because I thought they looked pretty cheesy.

But then I realized that I like the bar end mirrors even less.

I will say, that although I haven’t tried to fit them up yet…the Rizoma’s feel and look very solidly built.

Are you drinking the Tequila while assembling the bike?

No, too quiet around here for tequila, it’s a Baileys and Tuaca on ice evening lol

Our house cleaner just came back from a family visit in Mexico….she brought us that Tequila as a Christmas gift, so we had to sample it earlier in the day haha…pretty good stuff.

I have a few rizoma products on the SF. Mirrors, turn signals, rearsets, oil filler cap, brake/clutch levers, gas cap, mc reservoirs and tail tidy. Yes they’re priced at a premium but the quality and feel is on point. Figment is great and they really suit dukes imo. I’m especially happy with the mirror image quality.

Your getting close to SuperLeggera pricing with all the Mods.
Bike is beautiful. Where are the front turn signals with the Rizoma Mirrors?

Haven’t put them on yet but in got the Rage Turn Signals that wrap around the forks, it’s the cleanest looking option I could find.

I think you are right about how much I’m spending on it…I haven’t kept track of it all but we gotta be getting into Superleggera territory

I’ve been meaning to make a list of everything I’ve done to it in one place with prices as a sort of reference source for anyone looking at this stuff.

Some of the stuff is redundant and I’ll post for sale her, stuff I never even installed…like reservoirs, I have several sets of Rizoma and motocorse that I never installed and won’t likely install…two H20 radiators so one of those still in box will go for sale.

Did someone use channel locks on those fork caps?

Watch staged photo. LOL

Yes to both hahaha

Looked down and saw the Roley in the mirror and thought: That looks cool, need a pic haha

I thought it looked pretty cool with the watch and the 916 badge kk the same frame.

Wrapped my channel locks in plastic wrap but had soooo manny turns to make it wore through, and I’m like ‘do I really care’ that much about that blue anodizing, or do I wanna hurry up and get this done and go ride the bike lol
