So, I have a long ride planned this summer and was wanting opinions on backpacks vs tank bags. It will be a six day round trip and was trying to decide how to carry all my junk since the Pani is not equipped for carrying anything more than your wallet in the trunk.

I have a nice A-stars backpack but I have never owned or used a tank bag. I haven't carried a bunch of weight in the backpack over long distances and am wondering how uncomfortable it would be over the long haul. Do I use both or go for Ducati tank and tail bag combo and ditch the backpack?

I appreciate any and all feedback except stuff I don't want to hear or don't agree with...Ahhh, just kidding cause that would take the forum out of it:)

I have the tail it it expands quite large. Tank/tail by far best option. Even though Kreig bags hold a lot and distribute weight, it is still weight, and higher center of gravity.

+1. Well put and plus no fatigue from a backpack. If you run the tail bag, a good tip is to use it in conjunction w/ the passenger pillion to avoid scuffing / damage to the tail section.

Depending on what you're bringing I suspect you may need both or all three for a six day trip. I agree with the above though. The backpack is good for short stuff, but no matter how well it distributes the weight it will start to wear on you.

So, where are you going? Sounds like fun.

no luck using a tank bag on the pani, just can't ride with it. For that reason I use a tailbag and/or backpack (hate the backpack thing!)

Looked around and managed to find a small, thin tank bag (3 inch height) to use on the Pani.
Just big enough to hold wallet, hat, shades, tire gauge, pack of cigs, cell, etc. for a day ride so I don't have to stuff 'em down my jacket pockets. Bonus is that it has a large clear, detachable map case.
To carry anything more that's needed (like for an overnight trip) and I pull out a backpack.

What brand???

If you can, go with the tank bag - no fatigue. Also, depending what's inside, you can get some serious injuries if you were to take a spill wearing a backpack. (Never happened to me personally, but it's something you hear about every so often.)

I typically use a backpack but for longer rides, I'd go with soft side saddlebags. Another pani owner (not sure if it was this forum or another) made the bag attachments out of PVC and attached them to the passenger rear sets. It's was pretty clean looking and very functional. I'll see if I can find that thread.

A trick I learned on business travel, don't overlook the ability to ship stuff to your location and ship it back.

And I clicked backpack before reading. I do wear a backpack, but for long ride, I think I'd be going for some Kriega combination of tail packs.

I'm out for 10 days including the national Ducati rally (implies the SLR & bike stuff) and a rowing regatta( implies the big lens and sandles) with dinners and functions (implies fancy clothes and more footwear), oh and I had better do some work while away( implies laptop and chargers etc)
So as much as I don't want to wear a back back I'm out with all three: tank tail and backpack ! Feels a bit kitchen sink on a pani but actually it is surprisingly comfy - I can rest quite nicely on the tank bag, and the weight of the backpack is entirely taken by the tail bag! It looks a bit unseemly to see a pani loaded like that but it hasn't stopped us hitting it. 550km of NZ's twistiest roads yesterday and even more today....

also, if done right you can strap an extra bag / backpack to the tail bag. I've attached my tent, bed roll, and sleeping bag to it as well (use back packers camping stuff as it's more compact).

camalbak nice

to be honest, i guess it all depends on how far your going i over packed since i thought the heat would really get to me, it didn't but shorts at night are ok. I went CAMALBAK with the 1500 cc size bag. did 640 miles one weekend in the summer did the job great including the ice cold gatorade in the back too!!! I feel that by carrying saddle bag like elements defeat the purpose of the 1199 and sport riding altogether! but do what works for you
