DIY Sequential Tail Light

Update

I knew that communications with the Asian market is different, but I didn't expect it to be that difficult :(
So, no news from this side. I'm still waiting for an offer...

During last week I developed a new prototype of the electronics part.
The planned harness was too expensive, so I decided to go a completely different route.

Now it's just a little box, on one side plugged to the DIAG port, on the other side to the rear light. That's it. All functions are directly controlled via the Panigale's CAN bus. Also I don't need an accelerometer sensor anymore. I compute bike's decelleration from ECU data. This makes hardware cheaper.
Setup of the tail light is not done with DIL switches anymore, but with the OEM handlebar switches. That's pretty cool: I can design the electronics compartment now waterproof. And you can change all colors directly using the LH handlebar switches :)

Dude, that is sweet right there!

Outstanding Gecko! Woudn't be surprised if Ducati sit up and take notice of this functionality, for future models. One question. How are you notified of the settings if changing them through the OEM handlebar switches (I assume the dash?) and does normal use of the switches whilst riding, interfere with the rear light set-up you have made?

I did not decide yet (it's a hell lot of software to write :().
Most probably I'll disable setup while bike moves.

OK thanks for the update. Whatever direction you take, I am sure I won't be the last person to thank you for all your efforts thus far. You never know, you might even be able to sell the concept to Bologna for them to use in future models! Keep up the good work and can't wait to see the final product.

Viel Glück Alles Gueti !!

Looking forward to seeing this - thanks again for all the work Gecko :)

On a side note, Ducati should hire Gecko and Endodoc to design their next special edition bike --> Desmosedici II - Ti Edition :D

Is there any chance you're doing something similar to the headlights (integrated signals) at a later stage ?

.... me, why do you ask? :)
I did already. Looks great, but the same problem as with the tail light housing :(
It can't be opened easily.
Tried to get in contact with the italian manufacturer, but it seems to be quite normal that european (and US) companies do not reply anymore to "strange" E-mails :(

Just check how new Mercedes vehicle lamps startup: going from dim blue over blue, then low white and then bright white.
Looks great, and it's "just" software.

Please don't hesitate to just PM me your ideas.

Thank you BigBoost.
Exactly, this light is going to be installed into the SL's rear. I know exactly what you mean :)

The only problem in producing more tail lights is the mechanical housing, I would have to have a vendor that sells open ones :(
Maybe somebody on this Forum has access to the chinese market?

Why anti collision lights? There aren't that many aircraft that generally keep up with me :D

On a serious note, if I could manage to secure just the housings, how many initially would you want? 5, for prototype purposes?

Don't worry: ACLs can be disabled. I like them, that's why I programmed them :)

Thank you! I already have the source for the housings. Currently I am waiting for an offer to build the housings with the new electronics already included...

I made one functioning prototype and a second open one for measurements.
On the microprocessor side I made 4 prototypes on different plattforms to find out optimal setup.

Software is almost complete, The only thing left is calibration of the wheel speed values for "hard" brake calibration. Unfortunately I have no access to a Dyno, so I guess I have to build a data logger first.

I put the test rig successfully on these bikes:
1199S Tricolore
1199S
1299S
1199 Superleggera

The problem I have is that there are no Non-ABS 1199 Panigales in Europe. Wheelspeed and Brake pressure is handled differently on the CAN bus for these bikes.

Too bad you're not closer! That's exactly what I have. Non ABS 1199.

Yeah, I'd love to live in the States.
If I can't get my hands on a non-ABS Panigale, hard brake detection and setup menu auto-off function wouldn't work on these bikes. No big deal.
I guess I will send you some test rig in the winter to do some measurements for me. Logic can be reprogrammed later on.
