I've always been a hugeeee fan of music since the late 80's when I was in elementary school. Most of my friends played the sax, which I was in love with at the time but unfortunately, my parents were strained financially and couldn't provide me with such an instrument. In 6th grade, I took keyboard lessons in school for 1 semester. Didn't like it enough to continue. In 8th grade, I sang in chorus which was an elective chosen for me and here is where I found my vocal abilities, although was quite the embarrassment amongst my peers who were into sports (I also played basketball all through high school as well) but it was an elective chosen for me so I had to take it.

Fast forward about 15 years or so (2008-2009), I was introduced to Guitar Hero, a video game on Playstation 2. I never listened to that genre of music since I was mostly into rap/hip hop and r&b. Nothing else. Over time, I grew more fond of the game because it was challenging (I loveeee a challenge) and with that, I grew to like a lot of the songs on that game. Thanks to that game and the songs (mainly the bad ... guitar solos) I grew a brand new love for the electric guitar, enough so to wake up one day and head to guitar center and buy a real electric guitar in hopes to take lessons and learn to play it. Obviously pushing buttons is nothing like strumming a real guitar but the point is, the game opened me up to a whole new genre of music as well as an instrument I had never even considered before.

This is the exact guitar I purchased. Les Paul Epiphone Standard Plus Top.

Started taking lessons for about 3 months (Twice a week) and it just started to get very expensive and discouraged me from continuing. Put the guitar in its case and forgot about it for over 3 years even though my love for the sound of an electrifying guitar solo continued to grow uncontrollably. Frustration set in to the point of meltdown, wishing I'd be able to wake up one day and play like Tom Morello, Jimi Hendrix, Slash, Kirk Hammett, .... you get the point. Not for the fame or the fortune but simply to experience that feeling of energy and sound being produced by you and your guitar, a feeling which can't be put into words, probably because I can't replicate that feeling...yet!

Fast forward 3 or so years to October 2013 and I pick up a game called Rocksmith 2014 for PlayStation 3. I could write a novel about this game but I won't. All I'll say is I've learned more from this game in the 2+ months I've owned it than the private lessons I was taking. I am putting a lot more time into it though so that definitely helps. It's set up like a game so it is fun and doesn't seem as frustrating, even though it certainly has its moments.

I've learned a few of their practice tracks off the lessons in the game by memory now. My playing is a little sloppy but I know the notes. Practice will improve my overall playing and I am definitely hooked. It is an awesome game for beginners and intermediate level players who want to brush up on their skills but some advanced players have had some bad reviews about it but if you're that good, you wouldn't need this game anyway lol.

Anyway, that's my story. Electric guitar for 2+ months with no end in sight.

What instrument do you play? How long have you been playing? Share :)

Good for you! It's never too late to take up music. It's a great way of personal expression, more for self than anyone else.

I play the violin, piano, trumpet, French horn, and drums. Strongest being violin (obtained ARCT status when I was 13 years old). It's the Asian in me...

DAMN! First person that comes to mind is Adam Levine and his ability to play multiple instruments with great skill.

That's awesome man. I'm jealous! You're right. Never too late. I'll give myself 5 years (35 now) so by the time I'm 40, if I stick to this pace I'm at, I'll be playing it well enough to consider myself a decent guitar player. If only I knew how to read music lol. I'm doing that alongside my playing.

Yes ,this is my profession.
I have a Masters of Arts in music composition and am in my 3rd year of my PhD in ethnomusicology/ musicology. I have been playing the piano since the age of 4 and was raised in a musical environment. My dad was a jazz guitarist ( old school style like Tal Farlow, Barney Kesell, Oscar Moore, Joe Pass etc, etc)

My dad wanted me to be the next "Oscar Peterson" so he found a pianist who just happened to grow up with Peterson and also took lessons from Oscar's teacher ( Oscar's older sister)... When I was younger ( 10 years old) my dad somehow got me to play for Sammy Davis jr backstage before one of his concerts when he came into town.. the next thing I knew I was in the concert when he called me up on the stage ...Still one of my most fondest memories...

After that experience I took music very serious because I wanted to be a "performer" and studied with a separate classical and jazz pianist..

FAst forward- In the past 15 years, I have opened for Diana Krall, Oscar Peterson (twice), Aretha Franklin and now am just concentrating on finishing my PhD in music .
I also teach piano for the undergrads at the university where I attend .

My colleague and friend Stephan Moccio had to drop out of the program because he was getting way to busy getting work for the Canadian Olympic team song, writing the main theme and most recently he had to move to LA because after he wrote miley cyrus' "wrecking ball" he was getting calls from the record companies and the managers of huge names in the industry ( Brittany spears, Fergie, KEisha, Pink) to work on their new songs ...
His paycheck for the first 2 months of "wrecking ball" was over $2m...

I told him if he ever gets to busy with his new "lifestyle " working with the rich and famous , he could send them to me...

Since then I have made a lot of connections in the music and entertainment industry. I used to teach the VP of artist representation for ARMANI Canada and now all my wardrobe is supplied and sponsored by ARMANI ...
I am now in talks of getting endorsed by Steinway and sons as one of their artists...

Music can pay huge if you have the talent and the right connections..

PS- on display ay Sam Ash Music in New York about 10 years ago was the original guitars donated by Les Paul dating back to the 1930s .. The price tag if i remember correctly was over $500,000 each..
They also had guitars for sale owned by Brian Setzer (stray cats), BB King and Eric Clapton , all over $100,000

I've played the guitar for 24 years, the viola the same and piano off and on since the same age(not all that great at the latter 2 though). My grandma taught me to play the piano by teaching me "Color my World" by Chicago. My Dad started me on guitar with "House of the Rising Sun" then I continued on from there self taught. Playing has always been a stress reliever and mental block for me. I own 5 guitars. 2 Washburn Dimebag Darrell 333's, one blackjack and one dimeslime. A ESP KH-202 Kirk Hammett Guitar, A Jim Root Fender Telecaster and a Ivory Epiphone Explorer. I'll upload pics of the others later but the sexiest one is here.

Fender Deluxe Reverb Amp and 60th Anniversary Commemorative Fender Strat. I still have the Les Paul Epiphone that I posted in my 1st post but I'm on the verge of selling it and picking up a similar Gibson now that I can actually play a lot better than I did when I first started this thread.

That's a sweet Strat. Man. My first guitar was a Peavey Performer guitar made in 1988. Dude I thought I was awesome jamming some Tallica and Maiden back then lol.

Man I love that Tele. Looks badass in that color. Those Orange amps are expensive as hell but really good and clean amps. I'm probably going to also pick up a cry baby pedal.

Don't know if you've heard of them but zZounds.com - Musical Instruments Music Store. Shop for Guitars, Drums, Amplifiers and Equipment. and get the amp and pedals you want and pay on it while you enjoy it. I did that with my KH and Root Amp and Tele. Best way to buy hands down. monthly payment. and boom all yours while you play and pay. Which cry baby?

How about a Wes Montgomery L5 ?

When I buy a semi hollow body it will be the Gretsch Guitars G6120SH Brian Setzer Hot Rod Regal Blue!! The sound the way it crunches yet hit vibratos. Make music everywhere including un- mentionables.

OO - Great choice. I hate when people are afraid of boutique guitar pedals. Like a guy I know with a pedal rack full of BOSS pedals. There are a lot better pedals out there and you found one. Actually Kerry King from Slayer uses that pedal :D

I am impressed. It isnquite difficult to recreate jimi. Only seen 2 other people do it. SRV and kirk hammett. Damn impressed.

Check out all his videos. Then tell me what you really think lol it's jimi in an afterlife except he's a white version lol
